Point of View

Summary

Unlocking the mystery behind point of view: Why is point of view important to a novelist, and how can we make sure we're using it correctly? Which serves the story better - first person, third person, omniscient, or the quirky second? Using her 30 years of writing experience, Angela Hunt presents a brief lesson on point of view that should answer all your questions in practical, simple terms. You don't need an entire book to understand it - you only need to listen to this audiobook. These lessons, Hunt says, are brief for a reason. "I don’t want you to spend most of your time reading how-to books. I will give you what you need so you can put what you’ve learned into practice. That’s the best way to improve." Enjoy this writing lesson for a fraction of the cost of attending one of Angela's writing classes. Your writing will never be the same.

How Do I Become an Author

Summary

Creative writing is any writing that goes beyond the boundaries of ordinary formal, journalistic, scholarly, or technological types of literature, usually characterized by the emphasis on narrative art, character development, and the use of literary conventions, or the different traditions of prose and poetry. Due to the lack of definition, writing such as feature stories can be considered as creative writing, even though they fall under journalism, because the content of the features focuses specifically on narrative and character development.  Fictional and nonfictional works fall within this category, including novels, biographies, short stories, and poems. Within academic settings, creative writing is usually split into fiction and poetry groups, with an emphasis on writing in an original style, rather than imitating preexisting tropes such as crime or horror.  Writing for the screen and stage - screenwriting and playwriting - are often taught separately, but they also fall within the category of creative writing.

Good Writing Is Like Good Sex

Summary

What makes a book sexy? I’m not talking about erotica, per say, but what is the difference between a book you eagerly devour and a book you slum your way through? While there are individual exceptions, the most objective difference between a good story and a downright terrible one is simple - it all comes down to the writing. It’s either good writing, and we can forgive the technical flaws a little more easily, or it’s bad writing, and bad writing is just bad. Good writing is more than just good writing. Good writing is sexy. If you’re a fiction writer looking to improve your writing skills, this is the perfect, provocative listen to encourage you to get down to business and write your story. Inside Good Writing Is Like Good Sex, you will find: A titillating perspective on the writing process The secret to why your story is special, and how you can make it sexier Tips on romancing your readers How to write irresistible characters Basic writing and story concepts with advanced insights ...and all in a non-gratuitous fashion with a lot of innuendos. C. S. Johnson is the award-winning, genre-hopping author of several novels, including young adult sci-fi and fantasy adventures such as the Starlight Chronicles series, the Once Upon a Princess saga, and the Divine Space Pirates trilogy. She has written articles for The Rebelution, MTL Magazine, Hollywood in Toto, StudioJake, and more. With a gift for sarcasm and an apologetic heart, she currently lives in Atlanta with her family.

The Plot Skeleton

Summary

In writing class, our teachers made sure we understood how to write a five-paragraph theme: introduction, thesis sentence, points one, two, and three, followed by the conclusion. But rarely did any teacher tell us how to write fiction. They simply urged us to write a story. But how is that done? Angela Hunt has been writing and teaching for 30 years, and she has boiled plotting down to the basics in this audiobook. Not only will you come away knowing how to plot, you'll be able to point the important structural points in movies and other books you read. It's all about the skeleton, Hunt says, and every working story has one. Enjoy this writing lesson for a fraction of the cost of attending one of Angela's writing classes. Your writing will never be the same.

The Yellow Kids

Summary

The amazing story behind the greatest newspaper men to ever live, Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, lies primarily hidden with their reporters who were in the field. They risked their lives in Cuba as the country grappled for independence simply to “get the story” and write what was not always the most accurate story, but definitely the best. Anything to sell papers. Reporters like Harry Scovel, Stephen Crane, Cora Taylor, Richard Harding Davis, and James Creelman, among others, put themselves in danger every day just for the news. The Yellow Kids is an adventure story packed with engaging characters, witticism, humor and adversity, to reveal that the “yellow” found in journalism was often an extra ingredient applied by editors and publishers in New York.

Write Your Novel

Summary

This book is a condensed collection of notes, thoughts, and practical advice for fiction writers of all shapes and sizes. Where The 24 Laws of Storytelling is a deep immersion in the art of storytelling, Write Your Novel is a much lighter passage through the halls of fiction writing. It’s a writing craft book that asks for a less weighty investment of time and energy.  I love stories, and I love storytellers. While I feel profoundly humbled every time someone picks up my first book to improve their writing capacities, I’m happy to provide a more condensed alternative for a reasonable price. A look into heroes, villains, structure, dialogue, planning, and more, without breaking a sweat. An X-ray’s look at the bones of great stories, and the tactics that made them bestsellers.

Write Compelling Fiction

Summary

Write cleaner. Write better stories. Write compelling fiction. With over 150 books published, Larry Martin and Craig Martelle bring their fiction writing horsepower to you. How are they able to win over their readers? By getting them right where it matters - in books they can’t put down. Larry writes westerns and thriller. Craig writes science fiction. Those genres are far closer than you ever imagined because good writing is universal. Never give your reader a reason to set your book aside. They may not pick it up again. In the immortal words of Elmore Leonard, “I try to leave out the parts that readers skip.” You should, too. From plot to characters to pace to description, strengthen your writing to engage your readers on a whole new level. Keep them turning the pages, and when they’ve finished, they’ll be asking you for the next book. "The trail-tough cowhand rubbed the black whisker stubble on his chin with a knotted callused hand. "That'll do," Ethan said, and laid a nickel on the rough plank. A horse fly buzzed around, inspecting the coin, as Ethan waited." With examples peppered throughout, Larry and Craig reinforce the main points in a way to make it easier to incorporate into your own writing. Come to the word buffet and when you leave, you won’t be hungry. There’s no time like the present to start writing better. Get the audiobook Write Compelling Fiction today.

Audiobook Do-It-Yourself?

Summary

I knew nothing about audiobooks, didn't think about them or listen to them. But when a noted author described making audiobooks, it birthed a dream to be author/narrator for my new book, BOU Pilot, about my military flying. I experimented with making the MP3 files myself, and learned making audiobooks from Audible/ACX. I thought making the files would be tedious, but I discovered I loved telling my story. Audible accepted the finished product, and it is online. Next, I wanted to experiment with the smoooth studio sound, and made an audiobook of a second book, Lord I Feel So Small. Audible says that out of 100,000 books published every year, only 5,000 are made into audiobooks. Authors who want to get their message into the hearts and ears of readers are losing out. They are also missing the royalty income and the chance to grow as an author into a new medium. I did it, and you can, too.
