The White Wolf of the Hartz Mountains

Summary

Frederick Marryat’s The White Wolf of the Hartz Mountains is a unique literary work that stands out amidst the body of work of an author best known for pioneering the genre of the sea story. Excised from Marryat’s novel The Phantom Ship (1839) and published separately as The White Wolf it represents the first appearance of a female werewolf in Victorian literature. Krantz, a fugitive from justice, takes refuge in the Hartz mountains with his three children and lives by hunting in the forest and subsistence farming. One day he chases a white wolf, and meets a hunter with a beautiful daughter. He marries the daughter, but the children soon discover that their new step-mother is not the pretty kind woman she pretends to be. She has an altogether more sinister side...

Miss Bracegirdle Does Her Duty

Summary

The small minded and prudish sister of an English clergyman travels on her own to a hotel in Bordeaux. She realises then she is in the wrong room, but the door handle has come off in her hand, and she can’t get out. Then she discovers the man is dead. To be found in a strange man’s bedroom in the night is bad enough, but to be found in a dead man’s bedroom was even worse. A masterpiece, with outstanding characterisation and laced with subtle humour.

Summary

It it the second story about a group of five children - Robert, Anthea, Cyril, Jane, and their baby brother, the Lamb - who live in London. One day their mother buys a new carpet for the nursery which mysteriously contains a stone egg. When the egg falls into the fire by accident, nobody can possibly imagine what adventures will be unleashed. The egg hatches the Phoenix who reveals that the carpet is in fact a magic wishing carpet, which will take the children on a rollercoaster ride of adventures, scrapes and mishaps. They end up stuck inside a tunnel with buried treasure, on a sunny Southern shore where their cook is made Queen of the Island, having tea with the Rania in India, and even when they are at home in Camden town they mysteriously and unexpectedly become the owners of an unfeasibly large number of cats. There are many more adventures... but you will need to listen and find out for yourselves....

Who Killed Charlie Winpole?

Summary

Ernest Bramah (1868-1942) was an English author of 21 novels and numerous short stories and features. His humorous works have been ranked with Jerome K. Jerome and W. W. Jacobs, his detective stories with Conan Doyle, his politico-science fiction with H. G. Wells, and his supernatural stories with Algernon Blackwood. In his stories of detection, Bramah hit on the idea of a blind detective, Max Carrados, whose triumphs are all the more amazing because of his disability. In Who Killed Charlie Winpole?, Max Carrados investigates what initially appears to be a tragic case of a teenage boy who is accidentally poisoned by a toxic toadstool mistaken for an edible mushroom. Within a few days, the boy's uncle has been arrested and charged with murder. But Carrados is not satisfied by this explanation either and embarks on a highly irregular kind of investigation.

Struwelpeter

Summary

Heinrich Hoffman's classic cautionary tales for children was first published in German in 1844, with this English edition following four years later in 1848. It has remained a popular childhood favourite ever since. The tales tell the stories of children whose disobedience or bad habits lead them to a sticky end. No childhood is complete without characters like Shock-Headed Peter who never cuts his fingernails or combs his hair, or Suck-a-Thumb or Fidgety Philip? The comically gruesome fates which befall the children is partly what makes Struwelpeter so appealing to young listeners.
