Summary

"I fought one war on the battlefield. Now I fight another in my mind." Jay is always on the run - always looking for the next place to start a new life. But no matter how much he moves, he can't escape the painful memories that haunt him. As he settles into his latest job in the warehouse at a glass bottle factory, he finds himself the target of his co-workers' teasing. When he takes a stand against one of the bullies, a fight breaks out. His boss, a war vet named Reese, steps in, and Jay accidentally shoves him to the ground, revealing Reese's prosthetic leg. Jay's sure he's gonna lose his job, but he's blown away when he's given another shot. Reese is annoyed by the new guy. Jay is reckless and temper-prone. Maybe Reese shouldn't have given him a second chance, but his attitude reminds him of his war buddy - a guy who he cared deeply for and who he lost under tragic circumstances. He just hopes Jay doesn't let him down. When an accident in the factory triggers one of Reese's PTSD episodes, Jay returns the favor by being there for him and keeping anyone else from discovering the incident. Reese wants to move on and forget it ever happened, but Jay won't let it go. And as much as Reese tries to keep his distance, there's a heat - a passion - between them that he can't resist. It leads them to the bedroom again and again, but Reese quickly realizes they've ignited more than the sparks they create between the sheets. And despite the tough-guy façade Jay puts on, underneath there's a soul just as tortured and hurt as he is. He's starting to fall for Jay, but he knows there's a dark storm lurking in the back of his own mind - a storm that will return one day and destroy the beautiful connection they share.

Summary

Davey’s revised rule nyumber one: A good Daddy will love his boy with all his heart. Davey Hendrickson doesn’t mind being forever single when he’s got his bestie at his side. It’s not that he wants to be single. He’s spent most of his adult life searching for his own perfect Daddy. Even if he’s not naturally submissive, someone that fabulous is obviously meant to be a boy...right? Over the years, he’s dated every type of Daddy imaginable but not one of them could come close to meeting the requirements from his ridiculous list of rules. After losing his husband, Sammy Robustelli has learned to be strong while raising two children on his own. No matter what life has thrown his way, nothing seems too hard with his best friend and roomie Davey at his side. When the two friends learn that people believe they’re a couple, they can’t help but laugh. The very idea is a big joke...until it isn’t. It only takes a few wake-up calls before Davey wonders what happens if a guy might be in love with the best friend he can never have. It could never work for a pair of boys in need of a bossy top, right? Except...maybe Davey doesn’t know himself - or Sammy - as well as he thinks. This is the final book in a series about not-so-perfect Daddies, adorable “boys”, and one sassy brat with an insane list of rules. Grab your fan and tissues because this series comes with both a high heat advisory and all the squishy feels you’d want from a Susan Hawke book.

Summary

My job is to save lives. But what if the one that needs saving is the one I was sent to take? At 33 years old, Phoenix Jones once had a stellar military career ahead of him. But when tragedy struck his family, he walked away from the path he’d chosen to be there for the one who needed him most. Except fate is a bitch and when she once again takes Phoenix’s future in the cruelest of ways, he must find a new path. When a former army buddy introduces him to Ronan Grisham, the leader of an underground vigilante group, Phoenix knows he’s found a new family and nothing and no one is going to take that from him again. So when Ronan asks him to shadow a young man who participated in a brutal crime against Ronan’s husband, Seth, when he was a child and appears to be targeting him again, Phoenix doesn’t even hesitate for a second. Even knowing what he must do if the young man proves to have gone back to his old ways. Because family is everything... I can’t come back from what I did. I’m not sure I even want to... An ugly childhood left Levi Deming with little to do but dream of a day when he’d be free of his tormenters so he could carve out a simple life for himself, preferably somewhere far away from the family who never let him forget he was less than human. But one terrible choice at the tender age of 16 changed everything... Wracked with guilt for the role he played during a home invasion gone horribly wrong, a now 24-year-old Levi is trying to piece together a life where he can maybe do a little bit of good, even knowing it won’t make up for the lives he helped take and it definitely won’t give back the future he stole from the young man whose agonized screams still haunt him night after night. If it were only about him, he’d walk into the nearest police station and happily tell them to lock him up and throw away the key. But it isn’t just about him anymore... I expected to find a hardened criminal. What I found was something else entirely... With Ronan’s orders to terminate young Levi if he so much as even jaywalks, Phoenix expects an easy job with one clear outcome. But when a violent encounter forces Phoenix to interact with Levi, he quickly realizes the case might not be as black and white as he thought. Instead of finding a criminal with no conscience, Phoenix discovers a young man battling impossible odds and near crippling guilt. When his feelings of disgust and anger begin to fade and turn into something else, the would-be hitman is forced to make a terrible decision between the family he needs and the young man more intent on seeking judgement than redemption. Trigger warning: This audiobook contains multiple triggers which could also be considered spoilers. It can be read as a stand-alone story - no cliffhangers. The Protectors series crosses over with some of my other series, so for the most enjoyment, they should be listened to in order, but it is not required. You can find the correct order at the beginning of each audiobook. I've also bundled all my series in the correct listening order under the title of A Family Chosen: The Protectors and Barrettis.

Summary

Elijah Out of all the apartments in Atlanta, I ended up with the worst neighbor. Shaw Hastings is a headache. He's so full of himself it makes me crazy. Our official language is snarky banter - which I don't enjoy, I swear. I've got eyes for my bestie Danny, anyway. I need to figure out if he feels the same, so I email an advice column written by a serial dater, who's just as annoying as Shaw. Now, I'm asking myself why am I thinking less about Danny and having a blast virtually flirting with Anonymous? Shaw I don't know why I like my adorable neighbor, Elijah Coleman. We've got nothing in common, yet somehow he's both boring and kinda fun. He reminds me of this guy who emailed my advice column, so it shouldn't be surprising that - oops - they're the same person. Imagine me then offering to help Elijah get Danny in real life just because it means spending time with him. We go from angry neighbors, to frenemies taking dancing lessons together, to a flirtatious friendship where I enjoy making him happy. No matter how much we fight it, Elijah and I are stumbling toward the L word. It's messy and scary, but then he smiles, strikes a beautiful dance pose, or kisses me, and suddenly it's not so bad. He's ruining me, and I sort of like it. Stupid love. Unfortunately, with my track record of running scared, I just might wreck the only real relationship I've ever had. Stupid Love is a low angst, frenemies to lovers story, with an anonymous advice column, flirty emails, banter, and other fun shenanigans. There's no love triangle or cheating in this audiobook.

Summary

"I trusted once. I won't make that mistake again..." An ugly childhood and devastating betrayal have left 25-year-old Cain Jensen scarred inside and out. Protecting himself means keeping everyone at arm's length and protecting others means never getting emotionally involved. In the three years since he's joined an underground vigilante group, every life he saves helps ease the guilt of the ones that were lost to him so long ago. So when he's sent to a remote cabin in the Cascade Mountains just north of Seattle to follow up on the disappearance of his boss's co-worker, his only thought is to see that justice is served, no matter what the circumstances. But nothing he's ever experienced has prepared the cold-hearted and very straight Cain for who he finds on that mountain...or the intense need to suddenly offer more than just protection. "I've finally managed to break free, but I've never felt more trapped in my entire life..." Ethan Rhodes has been running for six months, but it's never fast enough, it's never far enough. At 30 years old, the talented ER Doctor should be spending his days saving other people's lives, not worrying about his own. But he knows that the four years of physical and emotional abuse he's suffered at the hands of his volatile ex are nothing compared to what will happen when Ethan runs out of places to hide, especially after taking something from the man he once was sure would be the love of his life. A violent episode that has Ethan narrowly escaping death leads to a quiet cabin in the mountains where his battered body will have time to heal before he and the young girl relying on him need to run again. But everything changes with the arrival of a mysterious stranger who threatens to give Ethan something he'd finally accepted was gone forever...hope. "I didn't see this coming. I don't think he did either..." To get to the truth, Cain must first get through Ethan's defenses, but watching the other man's walls start to come down forces Cain to face his own past. And as the tremulous connection between the two men grows and gives way to something more, both will need to decide if they're willing to risk giving each other the one thing that has cost them so much in the past...trust. Will two men who've vowed never to let someone close again let down their guard long enough to find each other, or will they let their pasts determine their future? Summary

Take one fabulous unicorn of a person... Grayson Davis came back to their hometown after college to help a new generation of kids who might be reliving their own past as a bullied young teen and LGBT teens who are struggling to find their identities in small-town USA. Taking a job as a youth counselor at The Rainbow Kids Foundation is their dream come true, even if it means working for the very man who once bullied them. So, what if they can’t forgive Clark Danvers for the past? They can peacefully coexist with Clark, and that’s good enough for Gray. As for their personal life, well...who needs one? They have family, friends, and their crazy cat Spike. As for everything else? Well, there’s an app for that.  Add one flirty, pansexual biker who’s the opposite of an outlaw... Canaan “Wolf” Matthews isn’t looking for love, let alone commitment. He’s busy running a club of bikers who do their part to rescue kids from bad situations, help abused spouses escape, and accompany social workers into the rough areas when it’s not a case for the cops, but backup is a necessity. Meeting Gray while on his way home from a hookup - with the evidence clearly crusted on his shirt like a merit badge - isn’t quite the meet cute Wolf would’ve wanted when he found the one person who could make his little pan heart go pitter-patter. Like everything else in his life, Wolf decides to roll with it and see what happens. To equal two people who might just be what the other needs... Gray only wants to have fun with Wolf. No strings necessary. So, why do they keep reaching out to the annoyingly cute biker when things get dicey for a teen who’s dealing with a situation that is far too relatable for Gray? Anxieties flare, and forgiveness beckons as Gray starts to see their old nemesis Clark for the person he is today. Before Gray can plan a future, they need to make peace with their past. With Wolf’s support, can Gray finally learn how to forgive and find their way to a full and happy life?  This is the sixth book in the Lovestrong series about finding love and being yourself in a small town. Intended only for 18+ listeners, this is an M/M romance full of all the fun, laughter, and sweet feels you’d want from an S. Hawke book.

Summary

Lex Even if I wasn’t losing my sight, I never would have seen him coming. I’ve known my fate for years, but I wasn’t willing to accept it. But as the light in my eyes dims a little more each day, I have no choice but to adapt. Or not. The secluded cabin in the north woods of Maine is supposed to be an escape. A place where I can figure out how to move forward with my life and to find out if I even can. But then, he shows up, and suddenly, I’m facing a new fight. Gideon He wants to be left alone? Fine by me. But I’m not going to watch him just give up. Wanting to be left alone - that’s something the guy and I have in common. But that’s about it. As far as I’m concerned, he’s just another rich city boy playing at living off the grid for a while. He’s got no idea what it really means to be alone.  My job is to take care of the cabin he’s staying in, and that’s it. It doesn’t matter that I can’t stop thinking about why he looks so damn broken or wondering why he stirs something inside of me I thought long dead.   But try as I might, I can’t stay away from him, just like I can’t watch him give up on himself. He may be losing his sight, but I won’t let him lose himself.  I won’t let him become like me... Note: Although this book is part of a series, it can be listened to as a stand-alone.

Summary

Kyle Trouble. That's all I am to people in this town. They're always waiting for me to mess up to prove them right. But I'm happy to keep to myself and mind my own business to survive my senior year at Wyachet High. Then, one rainy Monday morning, I meet the dirty blond in glasses. A confusing first encounter turns awkward, but it's short-lived since James Warner has a way of setting me at ease. Mr. Warner, I should say. My teacher. A fumbling nerd with a tendency to slip Milton and Shakespeare into conversation, he's a peculiar mix of charm, wit, vulnerability, and protectiveness. Curiosity leads to intrigue, which leads to...I don't even know anymore. Not a day in class goes by where I don't catch myself admiring the way he fills out one of his tight button-downs, hoping I'll catch his gaze at just the right moment and wondering if he bites his lip after a bad joke just to drive me out of my goddamn mind. I've never been like this over a guy...and he's never been into guys, at all. What am I doing crushing on my straight teacher? And why is it that, the more time we spend together, the more I feel like something between us is changing? No, it isn't possible, and even if it were, he has too much to lose. It's trouble with a capital T. We could never cross that line. We won't. We can't. We shouldn't. But if only we could.... Note: The backstories for the characters include mentions of past trauma that might act as triggers for some. The main characters featured in this stand-alone novel are 18 and older.

Twenty-four hours after meeting Jude Archer, rules one and two are already out the window.  Thankfully, there’s no chance of falling for the callous businessman who cares more about his next deal than he does his own safety. Jude may have managed to make fools of all the guys his wealthy boss and rumored lover has hired to watch him, but he’s playing in the big leagues now. The son of a bitch might not value his life, but I’m pretty fond of mine. Time to teach the clueless Jude Archer a few hard lessons.... Edmund Kemper - The True Story of the Co-ed Killer

2 ratings

Summary

American serial killer Edmund Kemper III stalked co-eds in California at the height of the era of peace and free love, dismembering his victims and tossing their body parts in remote areas around Santa Cruz. As pieces of young women began washing up on shore and turning up alongside rural highways, female residents - especially college students - were decidedly on edge. A lust killer who savored the act of decapitating his victims - and often used their severed heads for sexual pleasure - Kemper's story is particularly twisted among historical serial killers. Still, the true crime tale of Edmund Kemper is particularly fascinating, because the man many people called "a gentle giant" was a near genius whose cunning manipulation of others made him particularly depraved and dangerous. This true crime story, a detailed biography of one of the most psychopathic serial killers of our time, shares some insight into the troubled childhood and awkward nature that led the American serial killer to take 10 lives, including those of six pretty co-eds, his paternal grandparents, his calculatingly cruel mother, and his mother's best friend. Among historical serial killers, Kemper is especially depraved, since he included necrophilia and cannibalism in his gruesome mix of sordid criminal activity. Ultimately, Kemper's murderous inclinations and urges to kill were satisfied after he bludgeoned to death his mother, a woman he'd hated since he was eight years old, and he turned himself in. But if he hadn't finally acted on his long-held fantasy to end his mother's life, he might still be trolling California highways, getting away with murder.

Summary

Ethan: I'm not used to anyone having the upper hand over me and, in a single night, Sean Wright rescues me twice. That's why he intrigues me - why, for the first time, I want another man. I'm used to getting what I want, and I don't plan to let anything stop me. Only…he continues to get the best of me, and it only makes me want him more. When I start to see Sean's not just good looks, hot sex, and constant competition, I realize I'm in over my head…and I might like it. He makes me laugh, and he understands the pain I feel over my past, a pain we share. Even more than that, somehow, Sean gets me, but I'm not going to lie and pretend that giving him my heart doesn't scare me. Sean: The night I twice rescued presumably straight Ethan Harris twice, I figured that would be the last time I saw him. However, he keeps finding his way back into my life - and into my bed. Guess he wasn't as straight as I thought. Ethan's full of surprises, though, and being bi is just one of them. As cocky as he can be, he's also sharp and witty and, even when he's being his most arrogant self, he's charming as hell. He likes to win, but so do I. However, as we get to know each other, I realize there's more to us than the games we play in and out of the bedroom. It's a game neither of us have played before - one we could both wind up losing. And, with our hearts on the line, the real question is: when push comes to shove, are we both up for the challenge?

Summary

"I listened to you, years too late." “I don't have a right to complain.” Tattoo artist Floyd Turner's faith in justice was destroyed when he was a rookie cop. He struggled for a couple years with drinks and his own anger. He's long past that stage - now he runs a tattoo shop downtown. But despite his fulfilling career, he's nervous about the upcoming high school reunion. Not having a date to bring there reveals his insecurity: he aches for something more. And then, when he thinks things can't get any more stressful, his former patrol partner walks in. “These tattoos better make a difference.” After his past caught up with him, cop Greyson Peters became a fitness instructor and moved back home. His old career was hard from the start, and he's always struggled to find a healthy outlet. He's slowly healing, pouring his energy into exercise, but he's still got unsightly scars he wants covered. It's hard to be a playboy when his self-confidence keeps taking hits. Worse yet, his family keeps pressuring him to get back into the force.  “I turned my pain outward, you turned it inward.” With Floyd's family chasing him for a debt he's long since paid and Greyson struggling to find closure for the career he still misses, the two old classmates are drawn together. Both men are openly gay now, and they slowly realize they could always be fake dates for the reunion. As their feelings strengthen, can they even hold out until the reunion to admit that they're both afraid of wanting more? And can they open their eyes and see the support all around them? Crunch is a steamy, stand-alone gay romance novel with a HEA ending and no cliff-hanger.
