Sophie habite avec ses parents, M. et Mme de Réan, dans un château à la campagne. Elle commet de nombreuses bêtises. Son cousin Paul tente bien de la maintenir sur le droit chemin, mais c'est une tâche ardue. "Quand Sophie voyait quelque chose qui lui faisait envie, elle le demandait. Si sa maman le lui refusait, elle redemandait et redemandait jusqu'à ce que sa maman, ennuyée, la renvoyât dans sa chambre. Alors, au lieu de n'y plus penser, elle y pensait toujours et répétait : 'Comment faire pour avoir ce que je veux ? J'en ai si envie ! Il faut que je tâche de l'avoir.' Bien souvent, en tâchant de l'avoir, elle se faisait punir ; mais elle ne se corrigeait pas."
