Here's a BBC Radio-4 full-cast dramatisation of the classic American tale, starring Gayle Hunnicutt.
When Pollyanna's father dies, she is sent to live with her only surviving relative, the rich but stern Aunt Polly. Pollyanna's joy soon turns to disappointment when her spinster aunt gives her a cold greeting and tells her she is to stay in the attic.
It's not the welcome Pollyanna expected, but she soon regains her spirits, playing the "glad game" her father taught her. Nancy the maid is charmed by Pollyanna and soon the girl's infectious optimism wins the hearts of everyone in town, from the reclusive Mr Pendleton to the shy Dr Chilton. Everyone, that is, except Aunt Polly, who refuses to succumb to her young niece's charm.
It is not until a tragic accident occurs, which leaves even Pollyanna struggling to find a way to feel glad, that her maiden aunt finally unwraps her heart from years of bitterness.
This dramatisation retains the spirit of childlike innocence and optimism that has made Pollyanna a favourite amongst generations of children and adults.

Miss Polly Harrington was content in her solitary life as a wealthy spinster, enjoying her quiet and orderly homestead in Vermont. She didn't care that her staff whispered and grumbled about her behind her back...she liked things the way they were. Until one day, a letter arrived from a far Western town, informing her of a newly-orphaned niece with nowhere to go. Pollyanna is 11 years old, and certainly not quiet and orderly. She bangs doors, climbs trees, and talks openly to everyone in town (including a certain gentleman that Miss Polly hopes to avoid). Can Pollyanna learn to behave and follow the rules? Or will her optimism become contagious and force Miss Polly to finally be "glad" for once? Listen to this classic, engaging tale of hope and learning to love again from Eleanor H. Porter, brought to life by narrator Laci Morgan.

Pollyanna, an expert at her favorite "Glad Game" of always looking at the bright side in her numerous trials, is one of the most popular and enduring characters in all of children's literature. As Pollyanna arrives in Beldingsville to live with her strict and dutiful maiden aunt, she exclaims, "Oh, Aunt Polly, I don't know how to be glad enough that you let me come to live with you!" And from this point she begins to bring cheer into everybody's life, including the sick, the lonely, and the just plain miserable. All are transformed until one day when something so terrible happens that even Pollyanna doesn't know how to feel glad anymore.

Since it first appeared in 1913, Pollyanna has become an enduring favorite with children. The tale of an orphan who maintains a strongly positive view of the world despite adversity has a strong affect on listeners of all ages, even in the 21st century - and especially when read with such warmth by Laura Lefkow.

This new recording of the beloved children's classic is sure to please! When Pollyanna Whittier's loving but impoverished father dies, she is left orphaned and alone. Her wealthy spinster aunt, Aunt Polly, agrees to take her in, so she and her few belongs are packed onto an eastbound train. Pollyanna looks forward to living with her aunt, but Aunt Polly is cold and strict. She puts Pollyanna in a musty attic room and expects her to keep quiet and stay out of the way. Pollyanna's unrelentingly optimistic outlook on life, epitomized by her "Glad Game", turns all lemons she encounters into lemonade and seemingly removes all obstacles; punishments become rewards, unfriendly people are befriended. Soon, everyone in town is playing the "Glad Game". But Pollyanna's spirit is finally broken when a terrible accident with a motor car leaves her badly injured. Long-held secrets are revealed, and even Aunt Polly warms up, not only to her niece, but to a relationship she had long denied herself. This recording is based on the book by Eleanor H. Porter, originally published in 1913. It is a charming, albeit old-fashioned, classic, but one that still has a lot to offer. Award-winning narrator Heather Henderson also co-produced this audiobook. Her introduction offers a short history of Pollyanna, some insight into audiobook narration, and introduces the listener to life in New England in 1913, adding depth to one's appreciation of Porter's fiction.
