Almost Home

Summary

"I started reading Almost Home by Frank Marcopolos under the assumption that it would be a very sports-centric novel and was therefore surprised to find out that it was actually much more than this. The plot has several twists and turns and explores the overall drama of college life with particular attention being paid to the more seedy aspects. "I found the book to be cleverly written, fast paced and interesting in the way it explored multiple elements of University life, from the wild parties to life in the dorms. I also appreciated how Marcopolos gives the readers a narrative that alternates between the viewpoints of both Barry and Enzo. This alternating viewpoint ensured that I could attempt to understand the way in which the characters were acting to the point that at times I couldn't actually decide if I actually liked or disliked them. There really was no good or bad guys in the story, these were meant to be characters with both negative and positive aspects which I enjoyed seeing." (Killien Reviews)

Summary

Four stories by Frank Marcopolos and four poems by Q. R. Maber. Frank's fiction has been reviewed with such praise as:  “This is a thoughtful, articulate, and often humorous narrative about the choices we all make, sometimes in the space of a single heartbeat, and the life-altering impact of our subsequent actions. It’s also a bittersweet tale of self-discovery and seminal experiences, full of realistic dialogue, unexpected situations and offbeat characters. A highly [listenable] novel that recalls the style of Michael Chabon or John Irving, this is a literary gem that should not be missed.” (Blue Ink Review, starred review, "Eagles and Hawks and Also People As Well")  “Enzo is a thoughtful athlete reminiscent of Henry “Author” Wiggen in Mark Harris’ quartet of baseball novels, most notably Bang the Drum Slowly (1956). But Marcopolos offers a postmodern twist. The mysterious keeps taking prominence in this novel: the hazing rituals, which are amusing, sexy, confusing, and disturbing all at once; the hard-to-figure attitudes of Enzo’s teammates; oddities like a replica of the Winchester Mystery House that somehow features a pagan mechanical bull ride; Trudy’s oracular pronouncements; and portentous dreams and symbols involving several dead birds and brick-tied balloons that a teammate pops. Each image speaks of death and aborted flight, a counterpoint to Enzo’s longing for the big leagues and a home that isn’t stifling. Also complex is Enzo’s character. A well-written, intriguing sports tale that explores the importance of home base.” (Kirkus Reviews, "Eagles and Hawks and Also People As Well)  “A frequently effective collection of stories about people seeking to understand themselves and their predicaments.” (Kirkus Reviews, "Infinite Ending")  “These are rich quick-paced stories where not a lot happens, but still manage to be page-turning because of Marcopolos’ clean, spirited prose. Complex, even profound, stories leave the [listener] with more questions than answers, which is part of the book’s appeal. Every [listener] will get something different from this collection. Marcopolos is an eloquent and provocative writer. These are strong stories that work very well.” (Self-Publishing Review, "Infinite Ending")  “Frank Marcopolos delivers drama and humor in a poignant story about a college baseball player looking for a way into the big leagues.” (IndieReader, 5-Star Review, "Eagles and Hawks and Also People As Well")"

The New Gospel of Wealth: Includes 2019 Afterword

Summary

This is the classic work on the best ways to distribute surplus wealth throughout the community, by American businessman Andrew Carnegie, with a 2019 afterword to address issues that have arisen since Mr. Carnegie's time. Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919) was a Scottish American industrialist, business magnate, and philanthropist. Carnegie's most prominent business was the expansion of the American steel industry. Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh), Carnegie Hall (New York City), the Carnegie Hero Fund, and Carnegie "units" (university credit hours) are just some of what remains today of his immense legacy in American and world history.
