Summary

Audible's 2014 Narrator of the Year Julia Whelan performs one of Hans Christian Andersen's most beloved fairy tales, The Snow Queen. This classic tale is a fantastical fable of two dear friends - one of whom goes astray and is literally lost to the north woods, while the other undertakes an epic journey to rescue him. This charming, strange, and wonderful story is a timeless allegory about growing up and the challenges of staying true to one's self, and it served as the wintry inspiration for the blockbuster hit Frozen.

Summary

Brought to life by Academy Award®-winning actor F. Murray Abraham and an ensemble cast of narrators, and featuring original music by Michael Bacon, this collection contains Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved fairy tales, as well as a selection of lesser-known favorites. Unlike the Brothers Grimm, who collected and retold folklore and fairy tales, Hans Christian Andersen adopted the most ancient literary forms and distilled them into a genre that was uniquely his own. His fairy tales are remarkable for their sense of fantasy, power of description, and vivid imagination. They are like no others written before or since. Recognizing the literary merit of Andersen's own simple colloquial language, Erik Haugaard has remained faithful to the original text in the translation from Danish to English. Listeners will rediscover Hans Christian Andersen's best-known fairy tales, and find new favorites. In "The Emperor's New Clothes", two weavers tell the emperor that they can make him a new suit of clothes that is invisible to people who are unfit for their positions or who are stupid or incompetent. Con men, the two weavers actually outfit the emperor in nothing, but will anyone be willing to tell the emperor that he is naked? As an idiom, the story's title refers to things that are accepted as common knowledge in spite of being obviously untrue.

Summary

"Thumbelina" is a charming fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, and it has been called "the most delightful fairy tale you could wish for". The story is about quite a tiny, little girl, and her adventure with toads, moles, and cockchafers. "Thumbelina" is the first of Andersen's tales to focus on the sufferings of someone who is different, as at the beginning of the tale, Thumbelina is the only one her tiny size. It reflects on mockery and powerlessness, before a happy ending in which Thumbelina finds love and empowerment. As such, it is one of the many classic tales essential for the healthy development of children's minds, through the symbolic resolving of their fears and doubts.

The Ugly Duckling

Summary

The Ugly Duckling is a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. When the tale begins, a mother duck's eggs hatch. One of the little birds is perceived by the other birds and animals on the farm as a homely little creature and suffers much verbal and physical abuse from them. He wanders sadly from the barnyard and lives with wild ducks and geese until hunters slaughter the flocks. He finds a home with an old woman but her cat and hen tease him mercilessly and again he sets off on his own. He sees a flock of migrating wild swans; he is delighted and excited but he cannot join them for he is too young and cannot fly. Winter arrives. A farmer finds and carries the freezing little bird home, but the foundling is frightened by the farmer’s noisy children and flees the house. He spends a miserable winter alone in the outdoors, mostly hiding in a cave on the lake that partly freezes over. When spring arrives a flock of swans descends on the now thawing lake. The ugly duckling, now having fully grown and matured, unable to endure a life of solitude and hardship any more and decides to throw himself at the flock of swans deciding that it is better to be killed by such beautiful birds than to live a life of ugliness and misery. He is shocked when the swans welcome and accept him, only to realize by looking at his reflection in the water that he has grown into one of them...

The Daughter of the Swamp King

Summary

One of the strangest and, sadly, least known tales by Hans Christian Andersen, "The Daughter of the Swamp King" is complex and comprehensive. It covers great distances, long spans of time, transitions between real and imaginary worlds, and a variety of challenges and conflicts. The author relentlessly exposes his characters to the crises of perception, faith, conviction, and inner strength. How they venture through these tribulations and whether they stand all these trials successfully is for the listener to discover and decide.

Malle Hannes

Summary

Summary

Summary

Summary

Hans Christian Andersen's Complete Fairy Tales

Summary

This book contains the selected Andersen’s best fairy tales and stories in audio format. Hans Christian Andersen was a Danish author and poet. Although a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, Andersen is best remembered for his fairy tales, a literary genre he so mastered that he himself has become as mythical as the tales he wrote. Andersen's popularity is not limited to children; his stories — called eventyrs, or "fantastic tales" — express themes that transcend age and nationality. During his lifetime, he was acclaimed for having delighted children worldwide and was feted by royalty. Andersen's fairy tales, which have been translated into more than 125 languages, have become culturally embedded in the West's collective consciousness, readily accessible to children, but presenting lessons of virtue and resilience in the face of adversity for mature readers as well. They have inspired motion pictures, plays, ballets, and animated films. Let's bring the best of Anderson to life with this audiobook edition.

Duimelijntje

Summary

Summary

Summary

Long beloved by children all around the world, the stories of Hans Christian Andersen are filled with optimism, wit, and subtle irony. This delightful collection includes "The Beetle," "The Princess and the Pea," and "Thumbellina." The first story tells of an egotistical bug who travels the globe, only to find there's no place like home. In "The Princess and the Pea," the title character proves she is of royal blood when a pea placed under her mattress keeps her awake all night. And in the final tale, Thumbellina - a girl so tiny she fits inside half a walnut shell - overcomes innumerable hardships to live happily ever after with her charming prince. In Spanish.

Cinderella and Other Stories

Summary

In Cinderella and Other Stories, you'll find four of the world's most popular children's stories and fairytales. Full of character, wit and fun, these stories have everything from a glass slipper to an invisible suit of clothes! Cinderella Could this be the ultimate fairy tale? We all know Charles Perrault's story of Cinderella, and this re-telling with its wonderful range of characters has all the elements we love: a fairy godmother, a glass slipper, and of course a handsome prince. Joanna Pinnock is the reader of her own adaptation, complete with voice characterisations and bags of fun. If you're a fan of magical stories that children will want to listen to again and again, this is a must-have! The Elves and the Shoemaker It's a mystery… just who is visiting the shoemaker's workshop every night to make the most fantastic shoes? The shoemaker and his wife can't work it out, but they're determined to find out so that they can repay the kindness. What they discover leaves them speechless! Alan Smith is the reader of this re-telling of one of Grimm's best-loved fairytales. Delivered in a soft, gentle style, this story is perfect for bedtime. The Princess and the Pea This is the story of a very unconventional princess who's happier stomping around in her muddy boots than floating around in ball gowns. So when she turns up unannounced at the neighbouring castle, the queen (who happens to be looking for someone for her son, the prince to marry) can't believe she'll be a suitable daughter-in-law. But what follows shows that appearances can be deceptive. Does our princess marry the prince? Find out when Kathy Clugston reads Moy McGowan's adaptation of this Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale with a surprising twist at the end! Also includes “The Emperor's New Clothes”.

Andersen's Fairy Tales (AmazonClassics Edition)

Summary

Uniting universal themes with a wonderfully personal vision of the world, Hans Christian Andersen found magic in the landscape of childhood. His talking animals and living toys shine a sparkling light on the strange wisdom of innocence and the deceptive nature of adulthood. These stories have now been adapted into countless classic films (including The Little Mermaid, The Red Shoes, and Frozen - which was based on “The Snow Queen”) and have become part of our everyday speech, such as when we talk about “ugly ducklings” and “the emperor’s new clothes.” Transcending generations, language, and nationality, these stories continue to delight and enlighten us in equal measure. Revised edition: Previously published as Andersen’s Fairy Tales, this edition of Andersen’s Fairy Tales (AmazonClassics Edition) includes editorial revisions.
