When a ship of refugees plead to come to the Barony realm for help, the Lady St. August is more than pleased to offer refuge and it falls to the Barony captain, Tanner Scott of the Atlas to provide that aid. In doing so, he learns about the real truth behind the refugees and why they are fleeing something that appears to be coming to the RIM, invaders! While the Atlas delves into the details of the refugees, the RIM Confederacy Council and its leaders find that providing that refugee status and sanctuary, might be a process that will take the RIM into war. With Admiral McQueen and his flagship leading the way, the RIM Navy calls on its member realms to add more ships to the task force that is assigned to beat the invaders and their best laid plans go awry, except for Captain Scott's reliance on what he calls his battle insurance. While the invaders do not communicate, it appears that they have superior technology and use it to try to win the day. Only Captain Scott's plan may work...or will it?

Tanner meets a woman - the sister of the rebel leader and while he falls in love with her, he is not sure that the feeling is mutual. Yet he tries to straighten out his life and his drinking but instead he is faced with the choice of a lifetime - love or death. Against incredible odds in the middle of a prison planet escape, he makes his choice...and more than his own life depends upon that choice...forever changing the future of the RIM!"

"As penance for not being honest with his admiral, Captain Tanner Scott has been sent on a boring routine maintenance mission of checking the RIM boundary buoys one after another, and that lets him enjoy his Scotch in peace. Imagine his surprise when a Sleeper ship suddenly arrives on the RIM, and he learns that the thousands of alien Sleepers are all children! While making that known has already gotten RIM confederacy realms fighting, the real hidden problem is the secret that a virus infects the alien Sleepers. Finding out the Sleeper's secret is one thing but the news of what that virus could bring to the RIM and what it might do is the real reason that a powerful RIM royal realm wants to enslave the alien Sleepers. When Captain Scott realizes that another RIM planetary realm has also learned what the virus could be worth, they too try to take over the Sleeper ship and that means that Tanner can't as per usual self-medicate with Scotch but instead has to overcome the RIM's adversaries and somehow save the alien Sleepers too!"

After exploding with rage and injuring some Caliphate marines, Tanner is sent to the Barony Hospital ship on a 90-day observation to see if he's really sane. At the same time, he is challenged by his doctors and psychiatrist to see if he can defeat his alcohol addiction and to combat his PTSD too. Also on the ship is the Barony Secure labs, where the research teams are trying to find the Ikarian virus vaccine to give longevity to the RIM - and the Baroness is interested in their success. While the Caliphate continues to try to find a way to steal the vaccine, they end up using a vacjumper - someone who can go right out into outer space with no suit and attempt to break into the lab that way. Called on to forget about his illness, Tanner must rise to heed the call to defeat the vacjumper and to do that he must jump out into space on his own. Death, virus vaccines, and love all play a part for him and his quest.

After 55 years of waiting for an answer to be invited to join the RIM Confederacy, the planet Enki has responded with an alternate idea - that the RIM Confederacy join them instead. Captain Tanner Scott is sent on the diplomatic mission to get the Enkians to reconsider. He and the Atlas crew help the new ambassador to find a way to bring the Enki into the RIM Confederacy without exposing to them the secret of why that is so important. If the Enkians can be persuaded, the RIM could gain access to the newly discovered metal ores that appear to make a ship invulnerable. But all of the RIM wants to shortcut the process, so the Atlas needs to quarantine the planet as well as maintain full diplomacy with the Enkians. When the Caliphate gets involved and back room deals are made it all comes to a head at the Atlas Adept Officer's trial for terrorism. Captain Scott will try to defend his officer by acting as his defense counsel - a job that is made even more difficult as the Enkian society and justice system are both hard to learn and hard to navigate.

Jilted by his Royal fiancee, captain Tanner Scott is assigned to Eons and the newly constructed RIM Naval Academy buildings, and the duty is anything but a reward. His days are full of squabbling university professors and construction types all nitpicking for changes to plans and additions and extra and the boredom of detail is a horrible side-effect. As he learns, there is more to looking after a successful construction project than being at the top of the heap and the machinations of the Issians who run Eons and its mind-readers come to him for help. He knows that the Baroness is somehow also involved, but the openness of the Master Adept and her Inner Circle that controls Eons is what is so surprising to him. As the Naval Academy is finally ready to open and the heads of state of many of the RIM Confederacy planets arrive, the protesters against the Issians make their play to publicly humiliate the Inner Circle and their own plans to strengthen their ranks via the death of twins and Tanner must find a way to quell the uprising!
