À partir du constat de l'inégalité sociale entre protestants et catholiques en Allemagne, Weber émet des hypothèses qui expliqueraient ces différences. D'après Weber, la réforme protestante est à l'origine de l'éthique du travail du capitalisme. Max Weber (1864-1920) est un économiste allemand et fondateur de la sociologie. Il est très connu pour sa théorie de l'éthique protestante, reliant le protestantisme au capitalisme, dans L'éthique protestante et l'esprit du capitalisme. Max Weber fait l'objet d'une redécouverte en France depuis quelques années, redécouverte qui s'opère essentiellement à travers Le Savant et le politique. "La politique, c'est ce qui est faisable". Outre son travail de recherche, Weber est engagé dans l'action politique. Il est notamment invité à contribuer à la rédaction de la Constitution de la République de Weimar en 1919.
