This Hindi play by Mohan Rakesh debuted in 1958 and is considered the first modern Hindi play. The play received a Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for best play in 1959. Before this play was written, Hindi plays were either idealistic or didactic, devoid of any connection with contemporary reality; above all their language remained the language of literature, which wasn't suitable for the stage. This play changed it all. Mohan Rakesh went on to write two more plays and left one unfinished at the time of his death in 1972. Please note: This audiobook is in Hindi.

“Mohan Rakesh ki zindagi ek khuli kitaab hai. Usne jo kuch likha aur kiya- vah duniya ko maalum hai. Lekin usne jo kuch jiya- yeh sirf use maalum tha. Apni saanson ki kahani usne diariyon mein darz ki hai. Aur kitna takleefdeh hai ye ehsaas ki Rakesh jaisa lekhak apne anubhavon ki kahaniyan duniya ke liye likh jaaye aur apne vyaktigat santaap, sukh aur dukh ke shadhon ko jaanane aur pehchaanane ke liye apne dastavez doston ke paas chodh jaaye… Diariyaan, lekhak ka apna aur apne haath se kiya hua post-mortem hoti hain. Ek lekhak kaise til-til jeeta aur marta hai- apne samay ko saarthak banate hue khud ko kitna nirarthak paata hai aur apni nirarthakta mein kaise vah arth paida karta hai- issi rachnaatmak, aatma-sangharsh ko diariyaan ujaagar karti hain. Rakesh ki diary aatma-sangharsh ke saghan ekaantik shadhon ka lekha-jokha hain, jo vah kisi ke saath baant nahin paaya.” -Iss pustak mein Kamleshwar dwara likhi bhoomika hai Please note: This audiobook is in Hindi.

Mohan Rakesh was a towering figure in Hindi fiction and drama. More than a decade in the making, and put together in collaboration with the author, this volume makes a broad range of his work available to English listeners. The stories here range from humorous, satirical studies of human foibles to profound, painful commentaries on the complexities of the human condition. A translation of Adhe Adhure, the play that thrust Indian drama into modernity and one of the finest ever written in Hindi, is included as well. Rounding out the book, as part of the P. S. Section, are a self-portrait and interview - rare, first-person statements by the author and among the most important critical sources for his work. This is an essential volume for anyone interested in the changing landscape of post-Independence Hindi literature.
