The Burgess Bird Book for Children introduces children to the fascinating subject of bird life in storybook fashion. Thornton Burgess uses Peter Rabbit as a means for younger children to learn about birds in the Green Forest and Green Meadows. On the journey through the book, Peter learns a great deal from sassy Jenny Wren and other neighbors. Listeners learn about common birds' physical appearance, eating, nesting habits, and songs and calls. The author notes that he wrote this book to supply a definite need - to prepare a volume for those who, at the time, felt a lack of satisfactory medium to introduce bird life to little children. Thornton W. Burgess was a conservationist and author of children's stories. He loved the beauty of nature and its living creatures so much that he wrote about them for 50 years. One of the most beloved characters in children's literature, Peter Cottontail is up to his long-whiskered nose in rib-tickling escapades in this delightful classic. With gentle charm and humor, famed storyteller Thornton W. Burgess draws young listeners into the timeless world of the Green Forest, the Smiling Pool, and the Purple Mountains. Warmth and whimsy are the order of the day as Peter discovers the folly of changing his name, outwits the ever-hungry Reddy Fox, manages a number of hare's-breadth escapes and finally makes an ill-advised decision to hibernate - as Johnny Chuck and other woodland creatures do. The silliness of trying to do what nature never intended is one of the gentle morals of these adventures that combine the fun of a good story with little lessons about wildlife, the environment, and being true to one's self. This unabridged childhood classic will delight young listeners today just as it did their parents and grandparents, narrated by noted actress Marian Seldes.

In this collection of 16 short stories, Peter Rabbit learns how many of his neighbors in the Green Forest and the Green Meadows have come to have the attributes they have. Peter would also like to know why Johnny Chuck sleeps all winter and gets so fat before he goes to sleep. Why is Howler the wolf called Howler? Why can't Hooty the Owl move his eyes from side to side? Since Grandfather Frog has lived a long time, he is willing to tell stories to Peter and his friends about how some of these things happened (according to Grandfather Frog). As with all Thornton W. Welcome to the world of Thornton W. Burgess, where Peter Rabbit, Jimmy Skunk, Johnny Woodchuck, Reddy Fox, Bobby Raccoon, Joe Otter, Grandfather Frog, and Happy Jack Squirrel play with Old Mother West Wind and her Merry Little Breezes among the Green Meadows and by the Laughing Brook. In his first book, Old Mother West Wind, Burgess introduces readers to these beloved characters and many more, who go on to inhabit his later writings. Burgess’s stories were based largely on his own adventures in nature, and went on to be translated into many different languages and published around the world. Burgess himself was a naturalist and conservationist, and his stories reflect his deep love of the natural world and the critters that inhabit it. The stories are simple and lyrical, often teaching lessons or explaining the origins of certain traits the animals around us exhibit every day. For over a century, children have been delighted by Burgess’s tales of the creatures of the Green Meadows, and the stories continue to capture the imaginations of readers young and old.
