Linked to a mage she hates, Freddy is willing to trade all the power of the demon zone to get her freedom. Freddy was born to take the mantle of hellhound, but she wasn’t fond of the idea. Wearing the responsibility to atone for the work of a homicidal ancestor, Freddy is the 11th generation tied to the victim’s family, and being bonded to a mage halfway around the world is tiring. At a moment’s notice, Freddy can be yanked from an event or her own bed and pulled across the world to act as the mage’s familiar. Her friends want to help, but there is only one way to get her out of the indentured servitude that her family has landed her in. She needs to find a stronger mage to take her on as a familiar. The hard part is finding a stable mage to link to. The weird part is watching her friends auditioning them.

Her sister’s engagement complicates Hecate’s life, as she is suddenly visible to the paranormal society, at large, with her introductory visit to Oak Point Way. Comet is content to relive the past, but meeting Salk gives her a glimpse into the future, and she might just let go of regrets. Comet is 500 years old by human standards of linear time, but in her mind, she is the same young woman taken out of the Middle Ages by Santa. Being pulled out of her time to become one of the Christmas reindeer had been harsh but better than being stoned or hung as a witch. Her foray away from the workshop takes her to a modern past, a Ren Faire. The clothing and traditions are familiar, and she spends time grieving for a family lost many Christmases ago. Salk is a coal elf of the naughty-or-nice department. His job has been to find those who are definitely naughty and punish them. He never imagined that he would find a reindeer who needs his nice side more than anything else. Excerpt: Comet looked around the archive and twisted her lips. “I don’t want to go.” Ru hugged her. “I know, but you don’t have to worry about the modern age. The snowflake will tell you what you need to know.” Comet fidgeted. “So, it is all right that I am not looking forward to the human world?” “It is fine. Santa pulled you from your time when you were nearly an adult. You had every expectation of living your life as a human and milking cows, having babies, and plowing fields. This was not a life you could have imagined.” Comet ran a hand through her hair. “How can the snowflake give me what I want when I don’t know what I want?” “Trust the magic. It will keep you safe and put you where you can be happy.” Comet stepped back and held out her hand, extending the envelope to Ru. “Here it is.” “Thank you. Here is the snowflake. Put it on you and think of what you want, what you really want. When it is time to return, remove it.” “Do I really have to go?” “It is the only way to make our point. Come on. A few weeks is a nice change of pace. When you come home, you won’t have to leave again unless you want to. I promise.” Ru stroked her hair. Comet nodded. “Right. I can do this. The humans aren’t really that scary.” “You may even come to enjoy their company.” Comet opened the small box and lifted her tunic to press the snowflake below her navel. She closed her eyes and concentrated on what she wanted. She wanted her familiar world back and a man to call her own. When she opened her eyes, her surprise was genuine. She was home again.

Prancer loves big machines, and what gets a person in the mood for Christmas like a snow plow? Prancer has no problem with her place on the team, but she wants to experience some of the wonderful new vehicles she has been seeing every Christmas Eve. When she enters the human world, she assigns herself to drive a snow plow. It is everything she wants at a safe distance from any and all human interference. She wants to watch them, not be among them. It worked out well for her until the night she hit the snowman on the side of the road, and it was occupied. Merkoss thought he was on his way to intercepting one of the reindeer, with a few weeks to go. He leaves the workshop and ends up encased in a snowman, moving through time as well as space. After being struck by the snow plow, he finds himself facing his target, but he only has 24 hours to convince her that she should return to the workshop. Time is of the essence. Excerpt: Prancer opened the small box and took out the snowflake. “So, what do I do with it?” Ru smiled. “It is how the elves meld with the human world. I am pretty sure you can manage it, Prancer.” “Penny. Call me Penny.” Ru nodded. “Righto. Penny it is.” “How much time do I have?” “Well, it is eight weeks until Christmas, so keep track of the day, and on the 23rd, head home.” Penny nodded. “I can hardly wait to feel what it is like to be alone in the human world.” Ru grinned. “Then, stop talking and get going. The sooner you are on your way, the sooner you can begin your new experiences.” Penny nodded and pressed the concentrated magical snowflake between her breasts. In a moment, she went from the workshop to the human world, and she was standing in front of a huge machine. Her eyes went wide and someone called out, “Rancer! Get your ass in that machine. The highways aren’t going to clear themselves.” With a grin, she climbed the ladder and situated herself in the cab, the magic of the snowflake told her what she needed to do, and her spirit of adventure started up the monster under her. When it warmed up, she checked her maps and rumbled forward, out of the yard and into the sea of white. Between her map, her compass, and her GPS, she got on the highway, put the blade down, and started plowing.

Keeping candy in production takes priority during the holidays as she spends time getting some sugar. Blitzen enjoys fixing things, and the machines that make Christmas sweeter need attention, too. As Belinda Litzen, she is a one-woman repair shop catering to all the overworked bakeries in town. When a candy shop has a rolling machine down, she shows up to save the day and meets a candy maker who gives her a visual sugar rush. Rex has been waiting for his reindeer to show up, but the repairwoman was not what he had imagined. Instead of brown, she was golden, and instead of shy, she met his gaze head-on. She is his first reindeer, and he is her first wolf. Excerpt: Blitzen wrapped her arms around herself and looked to Ru. “I have never been alone.” Blitzen frowned and shivered. “Are you sure you want to do this? I think that the others can have the desired effect.” Ru looked concerned. “No. I think that I will stick with the original plan. It won’t hurt me to be out in the world for a while, and you know I do love all things mechanical. It will be good for me. I think.” Ru put her hand on Blitzen’s shoulder. “I will miss you.” “I will be home soon. The sooner that I leave, the sooner I will be on my way back here.” Ru chuckled. “You can leave and enjoy yourself. There is no harm in it.” “I have never really given enjoyment a try.” Ru rolled her eyes. “I know. You started life as a Quaker, and the simple life has never really left you.” “You know how terrifying this place was when I first arrived.” Ru stroked her cheek. “I remember, but this time, the magic is giving you the knowledge that you need. You won’t be pulled out of your time again. If you trust me that this is for the best, I promise you won’t regret it.” Blitzen nodded and took her folded envelope from her pocket. “Here is the letter. I hope it does some good.” Ru took it and tucked it into her pocket. “It will. I have a plan for it.” Blitzen smiled with amusement at the grim grin that Ru was giving her. “Santa is not going to like it, is he?” “Men rarely like to be slapped in the face with the obvious.” “Will it slap him?” “It is going to knock him backward. Now, if you are ready?” “I am ready.” Ru unfastened Blitzen’s collar, and the air rushed in and caressed her neck for the first time in centuries. There was a moment of panic, and then, Ru handed her the snowflake. Without hesitation, Blitzen hugged her friend and then pressed the snowflake to her naked neck. Moments later, a swirl of snow and magic swept her up, and Belinda Litzen prepared to start her day.

Forced into a one-week ride along with agents of the XIA, Benny tries to hide the fact that she isn’t quite human. Benny has lived her life in the shadows, avoiding the public eye. Her life as a recipe blogger pays the bills and lets her socialise, but she is about to get the assignment of a lifetime. Her boss orders her into a one-week ride-along with agents of the XIA, the eXtranormal Investigation Agency. It is the anniversary of the agency, and they need to improve their exposure with the general public. Against her objections, she is paired with a standard set of agents — a vampire, a shifter, and a fey. They are willing to work with her, and it is only when she signs the waivers that she learns why. They all read her column. A week doesn’t seem like much time to learn about an organisation that deals with things most folk don’t enjoy thinking about, but it whips past when the assignments go from casual crime to murders that have one pivot point. Benny. Excerpt: Benny hated assignment meetings. They were intolerable, as those selected for the lackluster jobs tried to squirm out of them. Today was no exception. “I don’t see why I am up for this particular assignment, Julian. Doing a week of ride-alongs with the XIA is not my idea of scintillating reporting. What am I going to do? Get stuck in a black van for a week?” The gathered reporters were all staring at her with amusement and relief that it wasn’t them. “Benny, you have basic magic senses and two years of mage studies at the university. You are the most capable of seeing if the XIA is actually worth the money we have put in over the last 50 years or if the anniversary is celebrating mediocrity.” Julian rubbed his green-scaled hands together. “Add to that the fact that you are human and it makes you the perfect foil to the extranatural officers that you will be dealing with.” Benny scrubbed her hands through her hair. “This isn’t a good idea. I just want to write the recipe articles and information on how to carve pumpkins for the best light distribution at Halloween.” Julian drummed his nails on the table, and he let out a gust of air. “Do you want me to spell this out?” “Please.” He waved at the selection of reporters in the room and on displays. “None of us can pass for human, and therefore, the XIA would consider us a suspect if they forgot we were there for the article.” Benny covered her eyes with one hand for a moment before glaring at the occupants of the room. “They don’t do that.” Freddy was next to her, and she nodded. “They do think we are up to no good.” Benny gave her friend a sideways look. “In your case, they are right.” Freddy shrugged. “I have to be me.” “Freddy, it is when you take someone else’s identification that you have a problem.” Julian sighed. “Right. Settled. Benny, you are on the XIA, and they are expecting you for the nightshift. Go home, get some sleep and take notes on everything you can. They aren’t allowing photos, but that is to be expected. I trust your memory and your common sense. Everyone else. As we have stated, get to it.” He pushed himself to his feet and walked over to Benny, she turned so he was staring at her face. “Take care and don’t do anything that Freddy would do.” From behind her, Benny heard, “Hey!” “For a full week?” “It is the 50th year of the XIA. It needs a full week of examination, and we are the only news agency they are willing to deal with. More to the point, you are the only reporter they are willing to deal with."
