Summary

Oliver Twist sets everything forth in just the title: a twisting and turning of plot events that take the young boy - as well as the listener - on a very emotional journey, from start to finish. The young Oliver is orphaned practically at birth, and when he grows up, he is passed off to several people who simply put him to work without really caring for him. Oliver escapes after being put to work by a coffin-maker, yet his new found freedom leads him right to a few individuals who do not have his best interests in mind. They're so-called friends who take him in, yet they have the intention of priming him to be a pick-pocket. But with each downturn in his life, there is a corresponding up-swing for Oliver. It's incredible to note that he is such a young age throughout the story, when many of the tasks he faced and overcame were so mature. Despite his tribulations, his run-ins with people who are trying to harm him, and his brief captivity with a band of criminals, Oliver experiences a happy ending after all, which has made all of the journeying and the searching worth it for him.

Alice In Wonderland & Through the Looking Glass

Summary

The most mysterious of twists, turns, and amusing misfortunes occur in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and the sequel, Through the Looking Glass. In the first book, we are introduced to the origins of Alice's journey, as she encounters the elusive White Rabbit, the Caterpillar, the Queen of Hearts, and, of course, the guests of the Mad Tea Party. Alice must rely on her wit and place her trust in the characters along the way to navigate the very obscure - and at times very frustrating - obstacles that stand in her way of moving throughout Wonderland. In Through the Looking Glass, the novel that follows, Alice enters Looking-Glass World, which is the exact mirror copy of her world, except it is all backwards. More obstacles face her as she attempts to navigate this new land, which is set up to model a chessboard that she must play her way across in order to return home. The question that lingers at the end of both novels is whether or not all of her experiences were a mere figment of her imagination, a simple dream that felt real, or did these events in fact take place?

A Christmas Carol

Summary

The timeless tale of Ebenezer Scrooge and his adventures on Christmas Eve continue to teach an important lesson, even to this day. Author Charles Dickens introduces us to the main character by painting him in a negative light, a selfish and miserly old man who will barely pay enough money to keep his office heated. When Scrooge returns home after work, the ghost of his former business partner, Jacob Marley, visits him and tells him that because of the wrongdoing he had done during his life, he has been condemned to walk in his ghost years shackled by chains. He warns Scrooge that the same fate might await him. The ghost leaves, allowing Scrooge to fall asleep. Scrooge is then visited by three different ghosts: first comes the Ghost of Christmas Past, who takes him to revisit various scenarios from his past Christmases, including one event that makes Scrooge shed tears. Next he is taken around by the Ghost of Christmas Present, who shows Scrooge what Christmas will look like this year, and he sees scenes of the Christmas dinner held by his clerk, Bob Cratchit, who has a crippled son. The final visitor is the Ghost of Christmas Yet, and while the two of them are on their journey, they overhear people speaking about a dead man and his assets. Scrooge yearns to know who has passed away, finally figuring out that the deceased man is himself. After the initial shock and a promise to change his ways, Scrooge finds himself back in his bed with a brand-new outlook on life.
