Summary

Broadway star Margo Channing, played to perfection here by Tallulah Bankhead, is at the top of her game and has successful collaborations with her husband, playwright Lloyd Richards and close friend, director Bill Sampson. Enter centre stage, Eve Harrington, a manipulative minx that uses and abuses the lives of Margo and her friends to fulfil her ambitions of theatre stardom. As she manoeuvres her way into taking over Margo's part in the current Broadway hit, only a cynical theatre critic sees through her sweet, naïve veneer of being Margo's greatest fan. He writes that Margo is ageing none too gracefully which contributes to Eve winning an important role in a forthcoming production that was intended for Margo.

Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy

Summary

Casanova…Don Juan…Charlie McCarthy? Ventriloquist Edgar Bergen achieved stardom playing both straight man and comedian with his wooden alter ego Charlie McCarthy. The Charlie McCarthy Show was one of radio's top-rated shows for nearly two decades. Button down and bow-tied, the gentlemanly Bergen would never behave improperly with a lady. His love of the ladies leads him to many an entertaining exchange. Joined by a bevy of beauties (including Lana Turner, Judy Garland, Dorothy Lamour and more) and a bunch of boys (including Abbott and Costello, W. C. Eager to be seen contributing to the cause, Hollywood's best and brightest flocked to the program. At first, it was primarily a variety show, with its first broadcast featuring Jack Benny, Joan Crawford, and Judy Garland. Later, it became an anthology show extraordinaire.
