Summary

They were just kids when Claudette McPhearson took them all in. Eight of them all together. All different races and ethnic makeups, but she loved them as her own. One woman taught them how to love, trust, and respect one another. She was the only glue that kept them together, the only one they wanted to please and never let down. She had been their light at the end of a long troublesome tunnel - it shined so bright. Then, one dreadful day, it all came to a crashing halt. She was walking to the bus stop from the juvenile correction center where she volunteered her time, and someone gunned her down in a drive-by shooting. It was a seemingly random murder. The culprit snatched her away from her family in the blink of an eye. Her kids were back to being the orphans no one wanted, even the ones who had aged out of the system. As they stood around Claudette's grave, holding hands and trying to choke back many tears, they all knew their lives would change forever. They now owned a house, and a $500,000 insurance policy was to be split between eight kids. In conjunction with that, they soon discovered that they were left with enemies no one had known existed in Claudette's world. Their uncle Snap was well aware of those enemies, and after one of the children embarked upon a lockbox with keys, codes, and monetary figures, Uncle Snap presented them with a video Mama had left, telling them who to trust and explaining her nefarious activities. A secret bunker underneath the house opened their eyes. It was filled with money, drugs, and specific directions from Claudette, who had built an empire from the ground up. A syndicate is what Uncle Snap called it, and since Claudette was dead, it was up to the kids to keep it going. Somebody had to step up to be the leader. One of them had to take her place, and they had to do so swiftly. The Syndicate waited for no one, and it was a criminal enterprise that trafficked in millions of dollars of drugs throughout the United States yearly. From the Port of Miami to the border of Canada, the Syndicate was a force to be reckoned with. Unbeknownst to every child, Claudette had been training them for this moment, this time. She had honed each of their skills, knowing that they would one day step up and run this f--king city.

Make Your Voice Heard in Heaven

Summary

Based on the keynote message that so moved government leaders at the 2017 National Prayer Breakfast, US Senate Chaplain Barry Black's Make Your Voice Heard in Heaven shows us how to pray prayers that God will hear. Now more than ever, we are fighting for our voices to be heard on earth. We march, we tweet, we advocate on behalf of the voiceless, calling those in power to listen and come alongside us. Sometimes it feels as if we're never going to be heard and nothing will ever change. Known for his powerful prayers, Chaplain Black challenges us, individually and collectively, to make ourselves heard in a way that really changes things - by calling upon the one who holds ultimate power. Through personal story and practical insight, Make Your Voice Heard in Heaven helps us learn to pray in a way that releases God's power and unleashes His blessing. On June 27, 2003, Rear Admiral Barry C. Black (Ret.) was elected as the 62nd chaplain of the US Senate, an office established in 1789. Prior to coming to Capitol Hill, Chaplain Black served in the US Navy for more than 27 years, ending his distinguished career as the chief of Navy chaplains. In addition to earning Master of Arts degrees in divinity, counseling, and management, he has received a doctorate degree in ministry and a doctor of philosophy degree in psychology. Chaplain Black has been recognized for many outstanding achievements. Of particular note, he was chosen from among 127 nominees for the 1995 NAACP Renowned Service Award for his contribution to equal opportunity and civil rights. He also received the 2002 Benjamin Elijah Mays Distinguished Leadership Award from the Morehouse School of Religion. In 2004, the Old Dominion University chapter of the NAACP conferred on him the Image Award, "Reaffirming the Dream - Realizing the Vision", for military excellence. Summary

The saying goes you shouldn't bite the hand that feeds you, but maybe you should if that same hand prevents you from feeding yourself. Every territory has a king, and Metro Atlanta is no exception. They have two. Gang Lords Blanket and Guerilla have been ruling the game with iron fists. Long ago they decided that neither would cross into the other's territory, and all would be well. Things change when Guerilla breaks the rules. Blanket retaliates swiftly, causing a turf war like never before. The two madmen leave bloodshed, murder, and mayhem in their wake. Caught in the middle of this battle, from different sides of the track, are London and Saint. Spoiled rich Roanoke girl London Royal is no exception to the old saying "every girl loves a bad boy and his bad ways". When she visits the downtrodden Jonesboro neighborhood of Goodman with her best friends, her privileged world changes drastically with one party and later a tow-truck pick-up by bad boy Santana Black. Santana "Saint" Black is anything but a saint. Caught up in the drug game, Saint is a runner and an enforcer for Blanket. The blood on his hands can never be washed away. Not to mention he's from the wrong side of the tracks to have his sights set on London. Can they find love in the middle of a war, or will both fall victim to the game of the streets? A modern-day Romeo and Juliet mixed with murder, drugs, and mayhem, the story of The Black Royals in Carl Weber's Kingpins Series, the ATL edition will leave you on the edge of your seat.

The Marines of Montford Point

Summary

With an executive order from President Franklin Roosevelt in 1941, the United States Marine Corps - the last all-white branch of the U.S. military - was forced to begin recruiting and enlisting African Americans. The first black recruits received basic training at the segregated Camp Montford Point, adjacent to Camp Lejeune, near Jacksonville, North Carolina. Between 1942 and 1949 (when the base was closed as a result of President Truman's 1948 order fully desegregating all military forces) more than 20,000 men trained at Montford Point, most of them going on to serve in the Pacific Theatre in World War II as members of support units. This book, in conjunction with the documentary film of the same name, tells the story of these Marines for the first time. Drawing from interviews with 60 veterans, The Marines of Montford Point relates the experiences of these pioneers in their own words. From their stories, we learn about their reasons for enlisting; their arrival at Montford Point and the training they received there; their lives in a segregated military and in the Jim Crow South; their experiences of combat and service in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam; and their legacy. The Marines speak with flashes of anger and humor, sometimes with sorrow, sometimes with great wisdom, and always with a pride fostered by incredible accomplishment in the face of adversity. This book serves to recognize and to honor the men who desegregated the Marine Corps and loyally served their country in three major wars.
