Summary

Vern Roberts couldn’t wait to turn 18 and get the hell out of Dogpatch, California. But city living is expensive, and he’s damned desperate when Dex, from Johnnies, spots him bussing tables. As “Bobby”, he’s a natural at gay porn. Soon, he’s surrounded by hot guys and sex for the taking, but it’s not just his girlfriend back in Dogpatch - or her blackmailing brother - that keeps him from taking it, it’s the sweet guy who held the lights for his first solo scene and who showed him decency, kindness, and a smile. Reg Williams likes to think he’s too stupid to realize what a shitty hand life dealt him, but Bobby knows better. What Reg lacks in family, opportunity, education, and money, he makes up for in heart. One fumbling step at a time, they connect, not just in their hearts, but in their bodies, where sex that’s not on camera, casual, or meaningless, becomes the most important thing in the world. But Reg is hampered by an inescapable family burden, and he and Bobby will never fly unless he can find a way to manage it. Can he break the painful link to his unrealized childhood and grow into the love Bobby wants to give?

Summary

Seasons change, and so do fashion trends. But in this heartstring-tugging PsyCop short, what's beneath the clothes matters most. Do clothes make the man? Jacob Marks cuts an impressive figure in his tailored suits, but Victor Bayne is another story. Nowadays, Vic does his ghosthunting in off-the-rack blazers, polyester blend slacks and cop shoes with nonskid soles. But back before he was a PsyCop - or even officially psychic - he rocked combat boots and a beat up biker jacket, and lots and lots of punk T-shirts. When he finds a faded tee in the back of a drawer, he's eager to lob it in the trash. Jacob, however, finds himself waxing sentimental about Vic's younger, more carefree days. This steamy 5000-word PsyCop short in Jacob's voice takes place after PsyCop #6, GhosTV.

Summary

In Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future, veteran technology journalist Ashlee Vance provides the first inside look into the extraordinary life and times of Silicon Valley's most audacious entrepreneur. Written with exclusive access to Musk, his family, and his friends, the book traces the entrepreneur's journey from a rough upbringing in South Africa to the pinnacle of the global business world. Vance spent more than 30 hours in conversation with Musk and interviewed close to 300 people to tell the tumultuous stories of Musk's world-changing companies - PayPal, Tesla Motors, SpaceX, and SolarCity - and to characterize a man who has renewed American industry and sparked new levels of innovation while making plenty of enemies along the way. Vance uses Musk's story to explore one of the pressing questions of our time: Can the nation of inventors and creators that led the modern world for a century still compete in an age of fierce global competition? He argues that Musk - one of the most unusual and striking figures in American business history - is a contemporary amalgam of legendary inventors and industrialists like Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Howard Hughes, and Steve Jobs. More than any other entrepreneur today, Musk has dedicated his energies and his own vast fortune to inventing a future that is as rich and far-reaching as the visionaries of the golden age of science fiction. Please note: This audiobook is in Russian.

Summary

Since Hank Calder's four-year-old niece Josie came to live with him, his life has been plenty dramatic, thank you, and the last thing he needs is a swishy, flaming twinkie to complicate things. But when Justin, the daycare worker at his gym, offers to do something incredibly nice for Hank - and for Josie - Hank is forced to reconsider. Justin may be flamboyant in his speech and gestures, but his heart and kindness are as rock steady and dependable as anyone, even Hank, could ask for. Can Hank trust in his dramatic “turkey in the snow” to offer his heart the joy he and Josie have never known? A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2012 Advent Calendar package “Evergreen”.

Black John

Summary

John Carey is just out of rehab and dying inside when he gets word that Tory, the guy who loved him and broke him, has removed himself from the world in the most bitter way possible - and left John to clean up his mess. Forced back to his hometown in Florida, John's craving a hit with every memory when he meets Tory's neighbor. Spacey and judgmental, Galen Henderson has been rotting in his crappy apartment since a motorcycle accident robbed him of his mobility, his looks, and his boyfriend all in one mistake. Galen's been hiding at the bottom of an oxy bottle, but when John shows up, he feels obligated to help wade through the wreckage of Tory's life. The last thing John needs is another relationship with an addict, and the last thing Galen wants is a conscience. Both of them are shocked when they find that their battered souls can learn from and heal one another. It doesn't hurt that they're both getting a crash course on how growing up and getting past your worst mistakes sure beats the alternative - and that true love is something to fight to keep if your lover is fighting to love you back.

Impossible Odds

Summary

"This book was full of twists and turns and I loved the hell out of it!” (Abstract Books)  He was a vision of power and privilege. Ruthless arrogance personified. A total stranger and an irresistible challenge.  I approached him in a busy casino and felt the sting of his brutal rejection. Then, I did something incredibly brazen. Impulsive. Reckless. I stole from him. The object was inconsequential, only worth a handful of dollars. I didn’t do it for the money; it was about making a statement. I went back home thousands of miles away without giving him a second thought, until I spotted those quicksilver eyes glaring at me across a busy nightclub. It was too impossible to be a coincidence. Yet, there he was, seething with a violent promise of retribution.  He thought he’d intimidate me. Hunt me down and make me pay. What he didn’t realize was I don’t scare easily. My name is Giada Genovese, and I’m a goddamn mafia princess.   Impossible Odds is the fourth book in the Five Families series but can be listened to as a stand-alone novel. This book is a mafia romance containing adult themes and may not be suitable for sensitive listeners.

On the Courthouse Lawn

Summary

Nearly 5,000 black Americans were lynched between 1890 and 1960. Over 40 years later, Sherrilyn Ifill's On the Courthouse Lawn examines the numerous ways that this racial trauma still resounds across the United States. While the lynchings and their immediate aftermath were devastating, the little-known contemporary consequences, such as the marginalization of political and economic development for black Americans, are equally pernicious.  On the Courthouse Lawn investigates how the lynchings implicated average white citizens, some of whom actively participated in the violence while many others witnessed the lynchings but did nothing to stop them. Ifill observes that this history of complicity has become embedded in the social and cultural fabric of local communities, who either supported, condoned, or ignored the violence. She traces the lingering effects of two lynchings in Maryland to illustrate how ubiquitous this history is and issues a clarion call for American communities with histories of racial violence to be proactive in facing this legacy today. Inspired by South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission, as well as by techniques of restorative justice, Ifill provides concrete ideas to help communities heal, including placing gravestones on the unmarked burial sites of lynching victims, issuing public apologies, establishing mandatory school programs on the local history of lynching, financially compensating those whose family homes or businesses were destroyed in the aftermath of lynching, and creating commemorative public spaces. Because the contemporary effects of racial violence are experienced most intensely in local communities, Ifill argues that reconciliation and reparation efforts must also be locally based in order to bring both black and white Americans together in an efficacious dialogue. A landmark book, On the Courthouse Lawn is a much-needed and urgent road map for communities finally confronting lynching's long shadow by embracing pragmatic reconciliation and reparation efforts.
