Write of Passage

Summary

John Moore's collection of writings takes us back to a time when harvest gold and avocado green were all the rage and green stamps were as good as cash. He explores the wonders of yesterday, such as diners and drive-ins, fried baloney sandwiches, and picking up pop bottles for change. John covers a lot of topics in this book, including love and marriage, God and country, the land, the people, and the folks that kept us free. He reflects on things we see every day but don’t have time to pay much mind to ‘cause we’re too busy and moving too fast. You’ll recognize some of these stories. We’re all not that different, and you might have one similar to tell. Thousands of people look forward to John’s column each week, and here are some of his favorites, in case you missed a few.

Summary

November 11, 1918. As World War I comes to an end, and the United States of America having won, it left our nation strong and patriotic as our boys came home. We will never forget the pain and losses we suffered, but nonetheless, we won the war, our boys were coming home. The roaring '20s has the nation captivated. Business is good. Industry is moving forward as technology from the industrial revolution shows no sign of slowing. Things are great in America. Economy - how shall we describe it? The economy is booming toward the end of the 1920s.  Having grown up post World War I when the United States was rebuilding, people saw an economy that was on an upswing in the roaring '20s. Even today, in the history books, it is something coveted by modern America. But in 1929, all that came to a screeching halt with the crashing of the stock market, and the United States entering into what now is labeled "The Great Depression".  By 1931, the United States was no longer roaring. We did not have government intervention as we do today, with programs, bailouts, and welfare. In short, the nation was starving, and with no jobs, there was not much to look forward to, and hope was fading fast. Now imagine you’re in the deep South where, even prior to the depression, it was considered poorer than much of the nation.  Now, imagine you are a poor black man struggling to live and feed your family. In fact, make that two. At a time long before civil rights, long before Dr. Martin Luther King, long before these two men would even be allowed to speak with me of such matters or tell their stories.  Already struggling to get by when times are good, what to do when times get bad? As for these men, they would say at that time, “impossible”. They had a solution. A solution that would carry them through 60 years together as best friends. That solution was devotion, trust, love, and friendship. The other was they were fighters. And they were good at it. They did not win all their battles, but they won the war. Enjoy their tales.

Organic Gardening for Beginners

Summary

Do you want to learn how to build your organic garden? Then, keep reading... Everyone wants the food we serve to our families, as well as our environment, to be safe and healthy. A good organic gardener strives to ensure that his or her activities are in harmony with the natural ecosystem and aims at minimizing exploitation and replenishing all the resources consumed by his or her garden. Once you have made the decision to grow your own veggies and fruit, rather than buying what is available on the shelves, you are in control of what you put into your body. This is the beauty of organic gardening. You can now safeguard your body’s health by avoiding harmful pesticides and fertilizers.   There are studies which support both viewpoints, but it is generally agreed that food grown organically is higher in phytochemicals and vitamins. Organic produce may contain up to 40 percent more antioxidants than what conventionally grown food has. And although the debate is still open with regard to the benefits of antioxidants, why not give it the benefit of the doubt and go for the potentially healthier option. This audiobook covers the following topics: Organic gardening versus the traditional gardening The dangers of chemical fertilizers and pesticides and their effects on your wealth The importance of a healthy soil Steps to control your soil’s health The weeds and how to keep them under control The pests: how to fight them with natural remedies Organic tips and mistakes Ideas for gardening in small spaces And much more!
