When the Rainforest Burns

Summary

The most outspoken proponents of saving the rainforest in Brazil were initially the region’s indigenous tribes, particularly the Kayapo tribe. Producer Cecilia Vaisman visits the town of Gorotire, where chiefs discuss their fight against ranchers, and how they are making accommodations, including mining and logging concessions. Some were looking at the immediate benefits, such as electricity, solid homes, and even airplanes. Others looked at what the tribe could be losing, such as traditions, hunting or a nutritious diet. We go to a seminal conference of tribes held in Altimira in 1989, where several chiefs, including Kuben'i and his cousin, Payakan, focused the world’s media attention on the Kayapo resistance. Members of the Brazilian government, representatives from the World Bank, the rock star Sting, corporations like The Body Shop and environmental and human advocacy groups met to hear the Indians’ issues. The effort stopped World Bank funding for a mega-dam project near Altamira on the Xingu River. As important, the world began to understand the value of maintaining tribal life. As anthropologist Darrel Posey put it: “The Indian is not an exotic footnote to history. There is much we can learn from them about managing the land so that ecological diversity is maintained.” The Soundprint documentary series features the best work of top radio producers. The 1968 Washington, D.C. riots and the federal government's response altered the social and political climate of the nation's capitol. Plastics: Here Today, Here Tomorrow

Summary

“Plastics,” said the character in the movie The Graduate. “There’s a great future in plastics.” Today we understand how plastics degrade the environment. However, in 1988, research was just beginning to show the damage plastics could bring, from plastics bags and six-pack rings in the ocean to bottles clogging drainage areas and sea animals ingesting bits of plastic. In this pioneering documentary, producer Vicki Monks takes us through the research known at the time, including studies that showed that plastic will survive in aquatic conditions for hundreds of years. Today, as more and more landfills and seas are polluted with plastic, the warnings from those early researchers still ring true. Plastics: Here Today, Here Tomorrow won the 1989 Environment Award from the Prix d’Italia. The Soundprint documentary series features the best work of top radio producers. Death at the Door

Summary

The Salvadoran Civil War was a conflict between the military-led government of El Salvador and the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), a coalition of five left-wing guerrilla groups. Lasting 13 years from 1979-1992, the war saw extreme violence from both sides and according to the United Nations over 75,000 people were killed during this time. Producer Chris Brookes takes us in and around the capital city of San Salvador, talking to both Salvadoran citizens and government officials about the conflict, and about their daily lives. Through stories of death squads and other human rights abuses, the profound socioeconomic inequalities that continue to mark the country, as well as the role of the U.S. government in the war, Brookes creates a poignant impression of El Salvador in the final years of the war. Death at the Door received the Grand Prize for Informational Programming at the International Radio Festival of New York. Speaking With One Heart: The Mayan Languages of Mexico

Summary

Over one million Mayan Indians live and work in Southern Mexico, and six Mayan languages continue to thrive there—languages more than 3,000 years old. In the 1950s, anthropologist Robert Laughlin and his wife Mimi arrived in Chiapas, where Laughlin planned to conduct his linguistic research. At that time, he expected to learn the Tzotzil language without too much trouble, and be welcomed into the indigenous culture. As he soon found out, Tzotzil is a fantastically detailed language full of metaphors, word play, and poetic description that require the speaker to fully understand the Mayan culture and worldview in order to effectively communicate. Vocabulary and grammar were only the tip of the iceberg. Producer Katie Davis tells the story of the decades Laughlin spent learning the relationship between Mayan culture, the Tzotzil language, and the evolution of the Mayan relationship to the modern world.
