Summary

All her life, Annie Prideaux has suffered through her brother's constant practical jokes. But Jake's last joke is one too many, she decides when he sets her up on a blind date with his friend Drew - neglecting to tell his straight sister one tiny detail: Her date is not a man but a lesbian. Annie and Drew decide it's time to turn the tables on Jake by pretending to fall in love with each other. At first glance, they have nothing in common. Disillusioned with love, Annie focuses on books, her cat, and her work as an accountant while Drew, more confident and outgoing, owns a dog and spends most of her time working in her beloved vineyard. Only their common goal to take revenge on Jake unites them. But what starts as a table-turning game soon turns Annie's and Drew's lives upside down as the lines between pretending and reality begin to blur. Something in the Wine is a story about love, friendship, and coming to terms with what it means to be yourself.

Summary

Lieutenant is the third in a series of near-future sci-fi thrillers whose young heroine, Ell Donsaii, we learned in Quicker has a nerve mutation that makes her an athletic phenomenon, so fast that no one can keep up with her. In Smarter, we learned how these fast nerve processes have made her a genius. She's both shy and concerned about her social skills, yet loved by those around her. Like Stieg Larsson's Lisbeth Salander (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), while trying to drift off to sleep, instead of counting sheep, Ell does mathematics. Doing this, she develops a new theory of quantum mechanics. She has now dropped out of grad school after using her quantum theories to invent a means for enormously improving communications using entangled molecules.  Back in the military to complete her commitment, she continues her physics research in her spare time. She also has to fend off more attempts to kidnap her by groups wanting access to her skills. As in the past, those who attack her don't consider that the very skills they envy and desire make her hard to subdue. Then the People's Republic of China shoots down the US satellites over Asia in preparation for an invasion of Taiwan. Ell's quantum entangled communication chips can substitute for lost satellite communications and observation. Can she convince the brass to use them?

Summary

Defiant is the ninth in a series of near future SciFi/Thrillers whose young heroine Ell Donsaii has a nerve mutation. This mutation has made her a genius as well as an athletic phenomenon. In Defiant, she, her husband Shan Kinrais, and their friend Gary Pace begin working on commercialization of the carbon allotrope technology they learned about in “Allotropes”. Also, new uses, both beneficial and dangerous are being found for her ports. These wormholes aren’t big enough to send people through, yet they make possible technologies that have created huge changes in our world. Those changes have resulted in tremendous economic and political upheavals. The political disturbances bring Edith Stockton to Presidential power, a woman who despises Ell and who is being stroked in that direction by individuals who want the secrets of Ell’s highly dangerous "one ended ports". Stockton imprisons Ell in an effort to extort the one ended port technology from her and Ell, having determined that she cannot release that particular secret, must decide how to respond.

Summary

Rocket! is the fourth in a series of near-future sci-fi/thrillers whose young heroine Ell Donsaii has a nerve mutation. This mutation’s rendered her a genius and an athletic phenomenon. In Rocket! she works out the enormous potential of the wormholes she discovered in Lieutenant. Though they only provide small openings through the fifth dimension, these wormholes will prove a tremendous boon to humankind. Feeding fuel to little rockets will let them fly all the way up into space.  Excerpt: Excitedly Ell started picking up the components and laying them on the surface of the big table. The happy babble around her quieted as one by one the team members turned to watch her lay out a number of metal tubes. She heard them speculating, “What is it?” “All those tubes. Some kind of plumbing project?” Ell laid a pointed cap at the left end and a conical device at the other. “A rocket?” someone asked. Ell grinned up at them, “Yep, a rocket.” Ben said, “Why a rocket? I thought we were going to replace rockets with instantaneous transfer of materials through ports to the satellites and to the space station?” Ell smiled even more broadly. “Well, first we have to get our ports up to orbit where we want to transfer those materials, right? And before you say we can just send them up on the rockets that already go up there, think about why those rockets are so huge?” She looked around the group. “Right? Because they have to carry so much fuel! For the first part of the mission they’re mostly just launching fuel for the next part of the mission. It’s horribly inefficient!” The group stared at her as they pondered her words. Fred scratched his head. “Are you thinking this little rocket”, he waved at the parts on the table, “because we can port it fuel, could make it all the way to orbit?” Ell waggled her eyebrows, “All the way to the space station!” Eyes widened around the group. Someone said, “Then we could ‘port’ them supplies!” Ell said, “Yeah! So, full speed ahead!"

It cost her everything to reveal her necromancy and sent shockwaves through our stringent religious settlement. Convicted of heresy against our sacred lost texts, she died soon after. Since then, I have worked hard to maintain my pious standing so that when I turn 18 I will be selected by a suitable husband at the bridal auction. As the large clock in town square ticks down to my 18th birthday, the dead have been appearing in my garden. If I’m discovered, I’ll face the necromancer trial just as my mother, oldest sister, and I did all those years ago. This time I fear I will not survive it. To add to my worries, an enigmatic handsome young man has arrived in the settlement. Around him swirls a green aura only I can see. Is he here to help me? Or does he have more nefarious plans?
