He encounters an attractive agent from the Pinkerton's Detective Agency, who is always one step ahead of him until she is captured and it is up to John to rescue her when they were both left to die in the wilderness. This accurate retelling of the gold rush is both an adventure and a detective story that brings alive the wonderful characters and events of that time.
