The Children's Train

Summary

This compelling Holocaust action adventure story tells of bravery, sacrifice, and the survival of the human spirit against Hitler and the horrors of war. It begins in November 1938 on The Night of the Broken Glass, when Jewish people of Germany are terrified as Hitler's men shatter their store windows, steal, destroy their belongings, and arrest many Jewish fathers and brothers. Parents face unparalleled fear for their own lives, but their focus is on protecting their beloved children. When England arranges to take the children out of Germany by train, the Kindertransport is organized, and parents scramble to get places on the trains for their young family members, worried about what the future will hold. Soon, trains filled with Jewish children escaping the Nazis chug over the border into Holland, where they are ferried across the English Channel to England and to freedom. But for Peter, the shy violin player, his sister Becca, and his friends Stephen and Hans, life in England holds challenges, as well. Peter's friend Eva, who did not get a seat on the Kindertransport, is left to the evil plans of Hitler. Peter, working his musician's hands raw at a farm in Coventry, wonders if they should have stayed and fought back instead of escaping. When the Coventry farm is bombed as the Nazis reach England, Peter feels he has nothing left. He decides it's time to stand and fight Hitler. Peter courageously returns to Germany to join the Jewish underground resistance, search desperately for his mother and sister he left behind in Berlin, and try to rescue his friend Eva.

Beautifully Imagined

Summary

Imagine. Love, life, lies. Playing the game of imagining is a dangerous one. It can leave you paralyzed by all the possibilities. Not knowing what could be because you are scared to dream. When my life finally all came together, I thought I’d imagined every outcome. I dreamed of the ocean. The waves. But most of all the shore. Covered in sand or snow. It haunted me every night but in the most wonderful of ways. Until that night. It was absolutely heartbreaking. Sinking below. Deeper and deeper until you hit the ocean floor. Never to touch the shore again. Sometimes taking a risk is the only way to break the surface. But that doesn’t mean it’s going to end well. You can’t even imagine. Trust me, I should know.

Coyote Alibi

Summary

First in a new series for listeners who like Janet Evanovich and Tony Hillerman.  On the edge of the Navajo Nation, rookie paralegal Naomi Manymules pauses on a lakeside clifftop to enjoy a moonlit moment. She hears someone swimming in the darkness far below her, and a boat drifts out of the shadows. When she glimpses something that might be a naked butt shining in the moonlight, she decides to head for home.  What she saw was the bare behind of a murdered local sleaze. His passing upsets exactly no one, but his wife can offer only a coyote for an alibi. The police aren't inclined to look much further for a suspect. That leaves Naomi and her new boss, attorney Grant Carson, to take up sleuthing. They navigate through a colorful assortment of criminals, surly teenagers, prominent locals, and a mobster or two and become targets themselves.  Meet the sleuths: Naomi Manymules is bluffing her way into a new paralegal career for which she is not entirely qualified. Luckily, she is smart and feisty and has lived in Sage Landing all her life, so she knows just about everything that goes on here on the western edge of the Navajo Nation. She has also got some training and a lot of motivation. As a divorced, 30-something mom of two, she needs a steady job and wants a stable career.  Grant Carson is middle-aged, cynical, and handsomely scruffy. He is a reluctant attorney, a tough ex-prosecutor from Phoenix who has escaped to a remote lakeside town to practice just enough law to augment his small pension. Since arriving in Sage Landing, he's kept company with some attractive women, but the real passion of his life now is his old yacht, the Deep Inn.

Her Final Watch

Summary

Speaking second-hand truths can be deadly....

Detective Lily Blanchette will stop at nothing to solve a murder. Her current case involves the killing of an undercover cop working to bring down the mob for prostitution and drugs. But Lily's usual laser-like focus on the case has been disrupted.

Two weeks earlier, she learned she was pregnant by her murderous husband whom she'd killed in self-defense. Unsure whether to keep her baby or place the child of this cruel man up for adoption, Lily keeps the pregnancy a secret from her colleagues.

Under mounting pressure to solve the case, Lily arranges a sit-down with a local mob boss only to find out her suspect is also wanted by them. But before Lily can warn her team, she and her new partner, Jeremiah, are shot at, and another body is found. When she discovers Jeremiah has a connection with the underworld, she is pulled into a conflict that swirls around the boss's son who's hell-bent on revenge. To add to the complexity of the situation, Lily learns that her victim might still be alive if it wasn't for opportunistic Assistant District Attorney Ibee Walters who has a twisted vision of justice. As Lily gets closer to finding the killer, she unravels ugly secrets that point to Ibee and Jeremiah - placing Lily's life and her unborn child in danger.
