Alban Butler, (1711-1773), was born in England and worked for a time as a Roman Catholic missionary priest. He was later appointed president of an English seminary in France. His primary literary work, the Lives of the Saints, was published between 1756 and 1759. It was a massive work, spanning 12 volumes (one for each month of the year), in which were given descriptions of the principle Catholic saints. This condensed version with short reflections was published later for a wider audience. It also includes important American saints as an appendix.

St. Alphonsus Liguori (1696 - 1787) was an Italian bishop famous for his moral teaching. Initially, he practiced law, but was drawn to the religious life and became a priest in the Catholic church. He ministered as a missionary to the poor, setting up "evening chapels". He would later form his own congregation and then be appointed as bishop. He wrote many famous sermons, meditations, and ascetical works. His meditations are still used today for the stations of the cross during Lent. This particular book offers a sobering insight into the inevitable prospect of death. A timeless classic that will help any Christian take their life and faith more seriously with an eye to their end.
