Letters to My Daughters

Summary

The author created this book to inspire, empower and encourage daughters of all ages around the world. This book is a great tool to catapult daughters into success throughout their present and future endeavors. In Letters to My Daughters: Poetic Affirmations of Love From A Father, Avery Washington affirms his adoration and appreciation for his daughters in an incredibly endearing and empowering way. His poems flow from the heart of a protective father to the soul of a young girl who is learning herself and finding her way in the world. His poem, "God's Creation," reminds the listener of who she is and lets her know that she can use her intelligence and beauty to become all God created her to be. "Self Love" is a poignant reminder to all women that the power of love emanates from within and is a gift from God. In "You Are Never Alone," Avery applauds single mothers and charges them to press on; he encourages them keep their heads up in order to be the foundation their children need while recognizing the gift of motherhood. His ability to transcend and go deep inside the heart of the listener is astonishing. The world is full of broken women and Avery Washington's desire to minister healing and wholeness through the word is evidenced throughout this book. Letters to My Daughters comes at a time where it seems obsolete that fathers are instrumental in their daughters' lives. It is so refreshing to hear a collection of poetry dedicated to celebrating our young girls who will one day appreciate that love of their father. The author profoundly reminds us that the first love a girl has is that of her father.

The Newlywed Marriage

Summary

No one gets married expecting to get divorced. Why bother in the first place? We are filled with hope when we say "I do" to that other person. But the cold reality is that the divorce rate worldwide is ridiculously high and is rising every day. There was once a time when people got married and it stuck. In fact many times, these people got married after knowing each other for only a short time. They didn't live together first. They never got intimate just to "test the waters". They dove in head first and were determined to make it last. But then times changed. What brought it about? Speculation abounds when it comes to this question. Many people think it was the women's rights movement in the '70s. Others believe that it came about with the advent of more media outlets and the portrayal of sexier, promiscuous characters. Still others say it is because people just are not as committed as they once were because of the instant gratification that we expect even to this day. Whatever the reason, the divorce rate has risen alarmingly over the past few decades. Roughly half of all people who get married will get divorced within 10 years of saying their vows. From 1970 to 1996, the divorce rate quadrupled, according to the United States Census report. Many people think they have to watch out for the infamous seven-year itch that comes about after seven years of marriage. Today, couples need to watch out for the two-year itch. Dissatisfaction in marriages happens earlier and earlier as people become more disillusioned with their dreams when they do not become reality as quickly as they think they should. In the past a divorce was difficult to obtain. Only under extreme circumstances, such as abuse or adultery, were you granted a divorce. Then the courts started allowing irreconcilable differences as a reason to divorce, and then the no-fault divorce came along.

Ghost Short Stories

Summary

Whether you believe in ghosts or not, it’s tough not to get freaked out when you’re alone and you hear something bump in the night or even hear a voice. The stories below will freak you out so it’s best to read these with someone. Preferably a friend and not a stranger you’ve decided to creep up behind on the street. My house was built in 1904. It is a single family home, wood frame setting on a concrete block foundation. I have been living here for about 12 years. Of all the weird things that my siblings and me have seen or heard in this house this one event is my favorite. This happened to my brother. About ten years ago my brother and his best friends had started a garage band playing mostly “Spanish rock”, alternative music but in Spanish. His friends could only get together on Sunday afternoons. They would practice into the early evening, and they would usually call it quits by eight pm. This was the time I usually showed up and went to bed, cause I worked the graveyard shift. This happened in late fall, so the days were getting shorter, they had just finished a long session when the decision to head to someone else house came about. My brother handed his car keys to his buddy so they could load up the equipment. Everyone had filed out of the basement, but the tricky part was that they needed to walk all the way to the back of the basement, up the back stairs, through the kitchen doorway, down the hall into the living room and out into the front porch. Everyone was outside sitting in my brother’s truck waiting for him. My brother was walking up the back stairs when he remembered that he had left his pancakes in a to go container sitting on a speaker in the basement. He made the decision to go back. Now the basement is not clean, with full sight lines, there had been partitions made, and the boiler and main heating unit are right smack in the middle. So after my brother walks back, he is about to retrieve his food container, when out of the corner of his eye he sees it.

Cover art for Constantine: The Emperor of Tolerance

Constantine: The Emperor of Tolerance

Summary

Many historians in the past have seen Constantine as a secret pagan who used Christianity as a political device or a God-sent Emperor who converted a whole nation to Christianity. Since Constantine's personal beliefs allowed for both paganism and Christianity, he created an Empire of tolerance or a religiously neutral realm (as far as what you wanted to believe). The model set up by Constantine was successfully continued and utilized to keep the Empire together with the notable exceptions of Julian (who tried to move the Empire back to paganism) and Theodosius (who allowed Christians to harass pagans, outlawed many elements of paganism, and eventually had to fight the pagans on the field of battle).
