Summary

Ask anyone who knows about music, and they'll tell you: Without Steve Jones punk rock would not exist. This is not hyperbole. No Steve Jones, no punk rock. Period. The prototypical street urchin turned Sex Pistols guitarist was the sole inspiration and creator of the punk movement that began shaking the culture in late 1970s London and is just as strong today. A pervasive air of gloom and coal smoke hangs over Jones' memoir, Lonely Boy, which is set mostly in working-class London of the '60s and '70s. For the first time ever, he'll illustrate a moment in time when the actions of a loose association of people became the full-fledged punk scene we know so well today. Legendary artist and trendsetter Malcolm McLaren took in the young Jones after noticing him hanging around the sex boutique McLaren owned with his then girlfriend, Vivienne Westwood, on Kings Road in Chelsea. By then Jones was basically homeless, stealing anything and everything to support himself and scratch his itch for theft. He would frequently pop in to McLaren's legendary shop. McLaren was so fascinated by Jones' rough background, wardrobe choices, attitude toward authority, and general aura that he created a cultural movement around it. And so the Sex Pistols, and with them punk rock, was born. Included in the audiobook are never before told stories of sexual abuse Steve suffered at the hands of his stepfather, stories of petty crime and acts of perversion he perpetrated as a young boy in London, the sadness of never knowing his real father (and then meeting him in a tale that bookends this narrative nicely), the early days as a Pistol, breaking into the music business, and how the hell a band with one album meant so much to so many people. Jones will also bring listeners up to speed on his more recent exploits, such as hosting a legendary radio show on KROQ, Jonesy's Jukebox; beginning an acting career by playing Krull on Showtime's Californication; his recovery from both sexual and substance addictions; and his attempts to fall in with the hair metal crowd of the Sunset Strip in the 1980s. You may be asking why Steve has waited until now to write his memoir, and you wouldn't be wrong in asking that. The thing is, I'm not sure we have a good answer. He just feels like now is the time, that most of what he wants to and will achieve in his life has happened, and his current existence lends itself to reflection and sharing. He hopes to do that with listeners the world over. There's also still an intense appetite for punk rock everywhere you look, and he'd like to educate some young people on where it all started, from the guy who inspired the whole scene. No topic is off limits in this grimy, streetwise memoir. Summary

The complete uncensored history of the award-winning The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, as told by its correspondents, writers, and host. For almost 17 years, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart brilliantly redefined the borders between television comedy, political satire, and opinionated news coverage. It launched the careers of some of today's most significant comedians, highlighted the hypocrisies of the powerful, and garnered 23 Emmys. Now the show's behind-the-scenes gags, controversies, and camaraderie are chronicled by the players themselves, from legendary host Jon Stewart to the star cast members and writers - including Samantha Bee, Stephen Colbert, John Oliver, Steve Carell, Lewis Black, Jessica Williams, John Hodgman, and Larry Wilmore - plus some of The Daily Show's most prominent guests and adversaries: John and Cindy McCain, Glenn Beck, Tucker Carlson, and many more. This oral history takes the listener behind the curtain for all the show's highlights, from its origins as Comedy Central's underdog late-night program hosted by Craig Kilborn to Jon Stewart's long reign to Trevor Noah's succession, rising from a scrappy jester in the 24-hour political news cycle to become part of the beating heart of politics - a trusted source for not only comedy but also commentary, with a reputation for calling bullshit and an ability to effect real change in the world. Through years of incisive election coverage, Jon Stewart's emotional monologue in the wake of 9/11, his infamous confrontation on Crossfire, passionate debates with President Obama and Hillary Clinton, feuds with Bill O'Reilly and Fox, the Indecisions, Mess O'Potamia, and provocative takes on Wall Street and racism, The Daily Show has been a cultural touchstone. Now, for the first time, the people behind the show's seminal moments come together to share their memories of the last-minute rewrites, improvisations, pranks, romances, blowups, and moments of Zen both on and off the set of one of America's most groundbreaking shows. Full cast of narrators includes Ryan Vincent Anderson, Graham Halstead, Cheryl Smith, Christian Coulson, Tommy Harron, and Elece Green. The Last Dawn

Summary

Fear ripples through human galactic society. Another ship travels from humanity's bleak future, targets a populated planet ... and lays it waste in a fiery apocalypse. Nothing survives, and the ship disappears.  In the midst of the recovery, admiral Jack Mattis finds more questions than answers as he tracks down the dreadfully powerful enemy ship. But the most pressing question: why are these mutated humans from the future relentlessly attacking us? What do they want? And at what cost? And are these the same creatures created by the genetic research corporation exposed by Mattis on the planet Chrysalis?  The answers lie at the root of a deep conspiracy that goes beyond governments, beyond corporations. It's a conspiracy that is led by those who will stop at nothing to succeed, and achieve ultimate power over humanity. And as the deadly ship prepares for its final catastrophic strike, admiral Jack Mattis and the crew of the Midway are the last defense between us, and our last dawn.

The Cold War Begins

Summary

As the Cold War between East and West commences, so does our story. The setting is war-ravaged Berlin in late 1946. From that devastated and divided city, spies from both sides began to move with relative ease throughout occupied Germany. America and its allies need to determine the composition and deployment locations of the military forces; Russia has moved into the very heart of Western Europe. The Russians work diligently to deny the Western powers knowledge of their intentions and strategies while consolidating their position in their new vassal states in Middle Europe including East Germany; their ultimate goal is to spread communism to the rest of the world. Recently declassified documents have revealed the true nature and extent of the spy versus spy conflict that occurred from the mid-1940s through the early 1990s between the American CIA and British MI6 on one side and the Russian KGB and GRU (plus eventually the East German Stasi) on the other. In late 1946, Kurt Altschuler arrives in the divided city of Berlin. His job as an Associate Press News Agency reporter serves as a cover for his true role as a CIA agent. His first assignment is to establish a spy network that covers the Russian-occupied zone of Germany. Two years later, during the Berlin Blockade, he meets Erica Hoffmann, a beautiful East German archeology student. Any relationship between a CIA agent and an East German woman is strictly forbidden; she might be part of a "honey pot sting". Love could not have found them at a worse moment. Their tempestuous relationship keeps Kurt in Berlin and on the front lines of the Cold War for the next 13 years. The 1953 East German uprising which was violently suppressed by Russian tanks is a seminal event in Kurt and Erica’s stormy love life. The next year, Kurt is tasked with managing the construction of the first Berlin Tunnel; if successfully completed, it would allow the British MI6 and the CIA to monitor communist communication throughout Russian occupied Europe. Ultimately Kurt becomes chief operations officer for CIA station Berlin. In that capacity, he manages the East-West spy-versus-spy interactions in Berlin for years. His experience allows him to direct his subordinates when the Berlin Wall is closed, the Berlin Crisis occurs, and a second tunnel is built into East Berlin. He yearns for action and even risks brief excursions behind the Iron Curtain. The novel begins and ends with a deadly confrontation between Kurt, a rogue CIA agent, and three Stasi agents in an abandoned warehouse in East Berlin.
