However, after about four episodes I started recording it and became hooked. "Being a Dubliner and having the privilege of walking the pages of this book daily, it became a world that absorbed me totally. Almost everywhere I went in Dublin, Joyce was there. I kept coming across phrases from the book in real life. I was born in Holles St. Hospital some 60 years after the Oxen of the Sun episode was set there. While the city has moved with the times, it's still unavoidable to get the sense of Joyce's Dublin even now. "Some parts of the book are more difficult than others, but I found that every word had its place, and with a bit of effort and research it came to life. Don't be put off by its reputation. You don't need a university degree (though some like to think that you do!). It's a book for everyone, and as you become familiar with the way Joyce writes, this becomes obvious. Summary
Reputed as Eliot’s favourite novel Silas Marner is set in the early years of the 19th century. Marner, a weaver, is a member of a small congregation in Lantern Yard. Falsely accused of a crime he didn’t commit, he leaves his home and lives a solitary life near the village of Raveloe. Dedicating his life to weaving and hoarding gold for the next 15 years, circumstances beyond his control shape his destiny and when his gold is stolen, he is rescued from despair by the arrival on his lonely hearth of a beautiful little girl, whom he adopts, and through whom he and the other people of the village learn that loving relationships are more fulfilling than material wealth.

Dubliners - A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man - Ulysses
Summary
This compilation contains three of James Joyce's most important and recognisable works. Presented here in the order Joyce wrote them they provide an opportunity to enter his world from the comparatively shallow end of "Dubliners" to the deep end of "Ulysses". "Dubliners" contains 15 short stories in Joyce's intended sequence, each with its own moment of realisation or epiphany, ending with what is considered to be one of the finest short stories in literature, "The Dead". "Portrait" could be seen as the prelude to "Ulysses". It shows the growth of Stephen Dedalus (James Joyce) from a young child to a young man. We see the emergence of the writer and all the elements that forged him. "Ulysses" is Joyce's masterpiece. It contains a whole host of writing styles, a lot of new words and experiments with the order the words are presented. It can be challenging at times but the rewards to be gained are incalculable. There are so many layers and levels within the book that if you let yourself become absorbed in it you will be entertained for life. When all is said and done, what "Ulysses" is really about is what it is to be human. I hope you enjoy this recording as much as I did. -- Tadhg Hynes
