Summary

In the halcyon days of the 1930s Sebastian Kilbride, a screen idol, and Nick Kennedy, his accountant and financial adviser are close friends, enjoying an almost idyllic lifestyle. The lives of their wives and families are intertwined. Tessa Kilbride, in contrast to her glamorous husband, is scatterbrained, warm-hearted and a homebody; Sally, Nick's efficient, well-groomed wife, is conversely a woman frustrated by domesticity. But, despite their differences, the two women have formed a strong bond. As have their teenage children, Jethro Kennedy and Zena Kilbride, who just lately have seen their childhood friendship tentatively blossom into something deeper. But the threat of war on the horizon will mean changes for them all...

The Restless Heart

Summary

Olivia Coulson is pretty and determined enough to attract any man's eye. George Chilton-Brookes, heir to the Cropton estate, is visibly enchanted by her, while handsome gentleman farmer Kit Fernley is also drawn to her looks and vivacity. Olivia wavers between her two suitors, eventually inclining towards the wealth and social position that marriage to George will bring - only to find that he has turned his attention elsewhere. So she marries Kit: handsome, attentive, loving... and in her eyes, second best. Unable to forgive her fickle lover for his rejection of her, Olivia sets out to make George sorry he ever slighted her; becoming so intent on settling old scores that she is barely aware of the deadly danger her husband faces. Challenged by his father to undertake a long and perilous sea journey to the Arctic wastes, Kit accepts, comforted by thoughts of his wife awaiting his return and oblivious of the lengths to which Olivia will go to achieve her revenge.

Summary

Recently widowed, Katherine Chambers is taking her young son to visit her husband's family when disaster strikes. The ship they are sailing on runs into a severe storm off Robin Hood's Bay on the Yorkshire Coast. The Whitby lifeboat goes to their rescue but the freak weather conditions mean that not only is the ship lost but the lifeboat crew as well. However, among the bodies on the beach, a survivor is found. Identified as a Katherine from the engraving on the bracelet she wears on her wrist, she has no knowledge of who she is or where she is from. Dr Bennett, the local doctor in Robin Hood's Bay, is called in, but though he can treat Katherine's cuts and physical ailments, there is little he can do to heal the gaps in her memory. Determined to save her from being placed in an institution, he asks his spinster sister to take care of her until her family can be traced. But jealous of her brother's interest in Katherine's care, Amelia Bennett is not always kind to her charge. She takes a cruel pleasure in Katherine's predicament, and especially her turbulent reaction whenever there is a storm. But until Katherine can remember her past, her future is far from certain.
