Dopo aver ottenuto da Danglars la sicurezza sul matrimonio con Eugénie, Andrea Cavalcanti/Benedetto viene a sapere che Caderousse lo vuole vedere e si reca da lui. Andrea gli racconta di essere convinto che il suo vero padre sia il Conte di Montecristo e Caderousse, assai interessato alla fortuna del conte, intende derubarlo nella sua casa sugli Champs Èlysées. La sera del giorno successivo Caderousse penetra in casa di Montecristo, che però, avvertito anonimamente, è già là, assieme al suo servo Alì. Dantès, sotto le mentite spoglie dell'abate Busoni, coglie il ladro in flagrante, ma lo lascia andare. Appena uscito dalla casa Caderousse viene pugnalato a morte da Andrea. Dantès soccorre Caderousse in fin di vita, riesce a fargli firmare la denuncia contro Andrea/Benedetto, e un istante prima che spiri gli rivela la sua vera identità, ottenendo il sincero pentimento del malfattore. Intanto Beauchamp, di ritorno da Giannina, si reca a casa di Albert con un documento che prova il tradimento del padre nei confronti di Alì Pascià; Albert cade nello sconforto, ma Beauchamp, in nome della loro amicizia, promette di tenere il segreto su ciò che ha scoperto, tuttavia un giornale pubblica comunque la notizia, ed è subito scandalo a Parigi. Messo alle strette, Mondego si rifiuta di rispondere e scappa via dalla sala come un pazzo. Albert vuole vendicarsi contro colui che ha scatenato questo inferno contro il padre. Egli capisce che l'origine della notizia proviene dal Conte di Montecristo, lo incontra all'Opéra, lo incolpa per la rovina del padre e lo sfida pubblicamente a duello per il mattino successivo. La rabbia di Albert si scontra con la tranquillità del Conte, sicuro della vittoria e ben intenzionato ad uccidere il giovane, fino a poche ore prima suo amico. Mercedes, che ha seguito il figlio a teatro, si reca segretamente a casa di Montecristo e gli chiede di risparmiare Albert, in nome dell'amore che un tempo li legava.

Summary
1815. Edmond Dantès, marinaio di diciannove anni, sbarca a Marsiglia dopo aver preso, da secondo, il comando della nave Pharaon. Qui gli viene confermato dall'armatore Pierre Morrel, proprietario della Pharaon, che verrà ufficialmente nominato capitano: ma questa non è l'unica buona notizia, Edmond può infatti finalmente riabbracciare il suo povero e vecchio padre e sposare la donna che ama, la catalana Mercedes. Tuttavia, prima ancora che il matrimonio venga celebrato, viene arrestato con l'accusa di aver tramato come agente bonapartista. Edmond è innocente, l'unica colpa che può essergli attribuita è quella di aver fatto scalo con la nave all'Isola d'Elba, dove si trova prigioniero Napoleone, e aver accettato di consegnare una lettera ad un uomo senza sapere che si trattava di un carteggio tra bonapartisti. La vendetta
Summary
Héloise (la seconda moglie di Villefort) vuole concludere il suo piano diabolico: uccidere Valentine, facendo in modo che suo figlio Édouard riceva tutta l'eredità. Ma Valentine riesce a sopravvivere. Infatti Noirtier fa capire al dottor d'Avrigny che aveva intuito da tempo che avrebbero avvelenato la nipote, e fino a quel momento era riuscito a salvarla dandole ogni giorno un poco della sostanza mortale, neutralizzandone così parzialmente gli effetti. Intanto Danglars è sull'orlo della rovina, l'unico modo per uscirne è dare in sposa Eugénie al "principe" Cavalcanti per ottenerne la dote che avrebbe di certo risollevato le sue finanze. Dopo le pressanti richieste del padre, Eugénie accetta di sposare Andrea, o almeno così gli fa intendere. Qualche giorno dopo gran parte della Parigi che conta è a casa Danglars per assistere alla firma del contratto di matrimonio tra Eugénie e Andrea. Al suo arrivo nella casa il Conte di Montecristo racconta, mentre i preparativi per il contratto stanno per essere ultimati, che ha fornito al procuratore Villefort nuove prove sull'omicidio di Caderousse; sentendo questa notizia Andrea Cavalcanti si dilegua (verrà però poi catturato il giorno dopo). Approfittando della confusione generale Eugénie fugge dalla Francia assieme alla sua amante Louise d'Armilly. In poche ore Danglars è rovinato: ha perso la figlia e il matrimonio che doveva risollevare le sue finanze. Nel frattempo Montecristo affitta (sotto le mentite spoglie dell'abate Busoni) una casa confinante con quella dei Villefort e sorveglia la stanza di Valentine, impedendo più volte che Héloise la uccida col veleno. Il Conte si rivela a Valentine, le fa scoprire l'identità della sua assassina e la rassicura sul fatto che presto tutti i problemi saranno risolti. Dà da bere alla giovane una mistura che la fa cadere in un coma indotto: in questo modo tutti, compresa Héloise, credono che sia morta e ciò getta nella disperazione Morrel, Noirtier e Villefort. Mentre si svolge il funerale di Valentine, il Conte si reca da Danglars e gli chiede cinque milioni: egli aveva infatti presso Danglars un credito illimitato; questi sceglie di pagare il Conte in cambio di una ricevuta generale di sei milioni quindi fugge a Roma per riscuotere la lettera di credito in contanti. Montecristo poi incontra Morrel e gli impedisce di suicidarsi: gli si rivela come Edmond Dantès, gli chiede un mese di tempo per sistemare le cose, promettendogli che al termine di quel periodo non si opporrà al suo intento suicida, anzi lo aiuterà. Il processo di Benedetto/Andrea si avvicina: in un colloquio in prigione Bertuccio gli rivela l'identità del vero padre, cioè il procuratore Villefort. Arriva il giorno fatidico in cui Gérard di Villefort ha giurato di farla pagare all'assassino di Valentine.

La redenzione
Summary
A Marsiglia Edmond incontra Mercedes (che aveva appena salutato il figlio Albert in partenza per l'Africa). I due parlano a lungo: Mercedes non odia l'uomo che ha davanti, anzi rimprovera sé stessa per le scelte sbagliate che ha fatto. Le strade dei due, un tempo giovani e felicemente innamorati, si dividono per sempre. La morte inaspettata di Édouard, il figlio di Villefort, fa però sorgere in Edmond dei dubbi sulla sua opera di 'giustiziere divino'. Queste incertezze lo portano così ad un viaggio nel passato: si reca al Castello d'If, che frattempo è diventato una sorta di museo aperto ai turisti. Qui visita la sua vecchia cella e quella dell'amico Faria. Disperatamente in cerca di un segno che possa cancellare ogni dubbio e rimorso, Dantès entra in possesso del trattato filosofico che il vecchio abate aveva scritto durante la sua prigionia. L'epigrafe del manoscritto recita: «Tu strapperai i denti al drago, tu calpesterai i leoni, ha detto il Signore.» Tali parole rincuorano Edmond, che vi vede una conferma della giustizia per ciò che ha fatto ai suoi nemici e del carattere 'divino' che aveva alla sua missione di vendetta. Danglars intanto giunge a Roma per riscuotere il credito di cinque milioni di franchi. L'intenzione del banchiere è di passare da Venezia, riscuotere una parte del denaro per poi recarsi a Vienna e stabilirvisi. Partita da Roma, la carrozza viene però intercettata dalla banda di Luigi Vampa, viene portato alle catacombe di San Sebastiano e rinchiuso nella stessa cella in cui era stato rinchiuso Albert de Morcerf. La prigionia di Danglars risulta subito molto particolare: ad ogni richiesta di cibo o bevande, questi gli vengono serviti celermente e sono di grande qualità, ma col difetto di avere un prezzo esorbitante, che Danglars, pur a malincuore, paga con assegni al portatore. Ben presto però il banchiere si stanca dello "scherzo", e domanda di parlare con Vampa che gli chiede, in cambio della libertà, cinque milioni di franchi. Danglars rifiuta. Ma col passare dei giorni la fame e la sete diventano insopportabili, così il banchiere cede. Esausto, ridotto ad uno straccio, reso disperato dalla fame, Danglars supplica Vampa di lasciargli almeno la vita; in quel momento giunge il Conte di Montecristo che, ottenuto il sincero pentimento del banchiere, gli svela la sua identità e lo perdona. Il 5 ottobre 1838 Maximilien Morrel approda sull'isola di Montecristo dove il Conte lo aspetta: l'ora della morte del giovane Morrel si avvicina. Il Conte gli fa ingerire dell'hashish, e fa entrare Valentine. Morrel, sotto l'effetto della droga, vedendo l'amata crede di essere morto. Dantès affida Haydée a Valentine chiedendole di proteggerla e di comportarsi con lei come una sorella. Egli, infatti, ora che la sua missione è definitivamente compiuta, ha intenzione di partire solo, ma Haydée gli schiude il suo cuore: la giovane greca offre a Edmond un nuovo amore e una nuova vita insieme.

Morti sospette
Summary
I marchesi di Saint-Méran (nonni materni di Valentine Villefort) partono da Marsiglia per Parigi per concludere il matrimonio della nipote con Franz d'Epinay, ma durante il viaggio il marchese muore improvvisamente. A poche ore dalla firma del contratto matrimoniale, quando Valentine e Maximilien Morrel già si preparano alla fuga per non essere separati, anche la signora di Saint-Méran muore di colpo, in circostanze simili al marito. D'Avrigny, il medico di famiglia, s'insospettisce pensando ad avvelenamenti e lo comunica al procuratore del re, ma, dopo i funerali dei Saint-Méran, Villefort vuole comunque concludere al più presto il contratto di matrimonio di Valentine e Franz. Accade però un nuovo colpo di scena. Il vecchio Noirtier rende noto, alla presenza di Franz e degli altri della famiglia, che il responsabile della morte del padre di Franz è egli stesso e gli fa leggere il resoconto della riunione bonapartista del 5 febbraio 1815 che portò al sanguinoso duello con il generale D'Epinay. Inorridito dalla rivelazione, a questo punto è Franz che rinuncia al matrimonio con Valentine. Intanto il signor Danglars è sempre più propenso a dare in sposa la figlia Eugénie ad Andrea Cavalcanti invece che ad Albert. Rompe così l'accordo con Morcerf, causando la rabbia del conte a proposito del quale ha ricevuto infauste notizie da Giannina, in Grecia. Anche Albert viene a conoscenza di questi inquietanti avvenimenti greci tramite la "schiava" Haydée che vive sotto la tutela del conte di Montecristo. Haydée gli racconta la storia della morte del padre, il pascià Alì-Tebelin, dovuta al tradimento di un ufficiale francese in cui il padre aveva riposto grande fiducia. Questo ufficiale non è altri che Fernand Modego, ovvero il conte di Morcerf. Ed è sul giornale di Beauchamp che compare un breve articolo che chiama in causa Mondego per il tradimento e la morte del pascià. Albert, offeso e infuriato, sfida a duello Beauchamp per difendere l'onore del padre, ma il giornalista prende tempo in attesa di avere maggiori informazioni sull'accaduto.
