While trapped in his new body, he becomes the property of thieves, farmers, cooks, soldiers, and priests, and observes the hypocrisy and ineptitude of Imperial Roman society. The Golden Ass is considered the only novel to survive the Roman period, and the earliest novel to survive complete in the Western literary tradition. It is brimming with slapstick humor and sexual escapades, and foreshadows later works by Boccaccio, Rabelais, Cervantes, and Chaucer, upon whom it was a direct influence. Le metamorfosi o L'asino d'oro (Asinus aureus), è un'opera di Lucio Apuleio, del II secolo d. CE' l'unico romanzo antico latino pervenuto interamente ad oggi. Nel 158 l'autore fu processato per magia,e nel suo discorso difensivo egli non citò quest'opera , che pure tratta di magia, di qui si deduce che l'opera sia successiva a quella data. Il libro è costituito da un soggetto principale, Lucio, e della sua metamorfosi in un asino a seguito di un esperimento non andato a buon fine. È questo l'episodio-chiave del romanzo, che muove il resto dell'intreccio: il secondo livello narrativo è costituito dalle peripezie dell'asino che, nell'attesa di riassumere le sembianze umane, si vede passare di mano in mano, mantenendo però raziocinio umano e riportando le sue molteplici disavventure. Una di queste digressioni, la favola di Amore e Psiche, costituisce un piano narrativo a sé. Per tutto il romanzo si alternano vari generi letterari, l'epico, il tragico, il comico, tenuti insieme dal fil rouge delle riflessioni dell'asino che sono un vero e proprio percorso di conoscenza. Del resto, il tema della metamorfosi è ricorrente, in letteratura, e l'Asino d'oro ne è uno dei primi esempi. Il testo letto è stato tradotto da Felice Martini, per Formiggini Editore, 1927. Summary
This tale of a man who, when tinkering with magic, becomes changed into an ass is one of the most entertaining and remarkable stories from classic Latin literature. It is funny, bawdy and completely approachable - but also shows life from the point of view of a beast of burden in the Roman Empire of the second century CE. Lucius is an active young man enjoying life - and the favours of an attentive maid, one Fotis - when the temptation to experiment with a magic potion proves too great. Life is very different as a four-footed animal, and he goes from one drama to another, in danger of his life at one point, facing seduction at another. Within this account of these adventures, Apuleius (c124-c170 CE) places ribald stories which are more familiar through retellings by Boccaccio and Chaucer. But there are also passages of considerable literary beauty, particularly in the extended account of Cupid and Psyche. The Golden Ass, in this lively performance by Jonathan Keeble, is a delight from start to finish. Translation: Bohn (1853), revised for this production.
