Confucius was a Chinese philosopher who lived from 551 BC – 479 BC. Although he is usually listed as the author of The Analects ( wise sayings ), it was actually a group of his followers, years after his death, who wrote down his words and descriptions of his daily life. The philosophy of Confucius emphasized morality, "the proprieties" - correctness of social relationships - as well as justice and sincerity. A major goal of his conversations was to get his disciples to think deeply for themselves by relentless study of the world. Confucius' values gained prominence in China over all other doctrines and, in time, his thoughts were developed into a system of philosophy known as "Confucianism." It is difficult for people outside China to realize just how great an influence Confucius has had on Chinese thought. To his day, even in Communist China, there are temples to Confucius in almost every city and every year spectacular memorial ceremonies are held honoring Confucius and his philosophy.

One of the undisputed giants in the history of human thought, and the founder of one of the world's longest-lasting cultural traditions, Confucius (known as Kong Fuzi in his native China) is arguably the most enduring of all the world's great thinkers. The Analects, the slender volume thought to have been compiled by his followers, has the strongest claim to represent Confucius' actual words. Sometimes pithy, sometimes conversational, occasionally enigmatic, often profoundly searching, the book contains memorable sayings about the moral health of the individual, the family and the body politic, and continues to be a source of inexhaustible wisdom after more than two and a half millennia.

Virtually no one in the village of Castillac holds out any hope. It has been seven years, after all. Seven years since the popular, mischievous Valerie Boutillier disappeared without a trace. The exertions of the gendarmes, led by Chief Dufort, yielded almost no clues, and his failure to solve the case had been one of the main reasons he quit the force. But then a shred of evidence appears. It might be nothing. But Molly Sutton isn't afraid to grab hold of it and take it as far as she can. Will a shred be enough? And if Valerie is still alive, how will Molly and Ben ever find her in time?

The Analects is a collection of sayings and ideas attributed to the Chinese philosopher Confucius and his contemporaries, believed to have been compiled and written by Confucius's followers. Confucius believed that the welfare of a country depended on the moral cultivation of its people, beginning from the nation's leadership. He believed that individuals could begin to cultivate an all-encompassing sense of virtue through ren and that the most basic step to cultivating ren was devotion to one's parents and older siblings. He taught that one's individual desires do not need to be suppressed but that people should be educated to reconcile their desires via rituals and forms of propriety through which people could demonstrate their respect for others and their responsible roles in society.
