Ce roman "extraordinaire" au sens premier du terme est l'un des premiers fleurons d'un genre promis à une grande réussite. Né en 1920, Jean Desailly, d'abord passionné par les Beaux-Arts se tourne vers le Théâtre. En 1942, il remporte le premier Prix du Conservatoire et entre rapidement à la Comédie Française. En même temps le Cinéma s'accapare sa silhouette et son talent... bientôt les maisons de disque le réclament. En 1955, Desailly qui incarne le flegme et l'élégance, avait été remarqué par Sacha Guitry ( Si Versailles m'était conté) et jouait aux côtés de Gérard Philippe et Michèle Morgan dans Les grandes manœuvres, lit le Voyage au centre de la Terre. Sa diction impétueuse emporte l'auditeur au centre de la terre et persuade que ce voyage en rêve pourrait bien être réalité.
