Don't Mean Nuthin' tells the story of Frank Morgan, a young college grad raised on army discipline who begins his career as a Phoenix Program assassin in Vietnam believing in his country. The audiobook starts with Morgan on the Freedom Bird to 'Nam in 1969, sitting next to a grizzled grunt. It's Morgan's first hint of what may be in store. With less than a month to go on his tour, Morgan leads a squad of South Vietnamese special forces in a bloody massacre and then mistakenly kills a beautiful innocent woman, Liem, in an old French plantation outside Can Tho. The attempted murder of Morgan by his CIA chief, a swashbuckling midget cowboy named Comer, who wears silver spurs on his boots, begins Morgan's metamorphosis into an avenging assassin not for hire by the US war machine. Morgan teams with a Montagnard scout, Luong, and they visit an old comrade who has adopted a young Vietnamese boy. During their stay the village is attacked, leaving Morgan and Luong as the only guardians. While moving through the bush with the child and Luong or at night, watching the Southern Cross, one of Morgan's pastimes is to write letters he never mails to his parents and draft fictional articles for Stars and Stripes. Don't Mean Nuthin' is filled with stories in the style of Tim O'Brien and Michael Herr. The book captures the setting of a country melting in napalm ooze and anecdotes grunts used to survive the insanity - all don't mean nuthin'.

When listeners first meet the three rough CIA Black Ops agents at the heart of this novel, they’re on an unlisted mission to the Liman Abu Zaabal prison, a special rendition site in Egypt, north of Cairo, “the perfect environment for creativity in torture”. The three operatives, Delta Force titan Washington, dangerous ex-Irish Republican Army drunk Finnen, and small-town Kansas boy (and the book’s narrator) Morgan, have been dispatched to Liman Abu Zaabal in a kind of response to their having gone off-script in an earlier undertaking. During that adventure, they killed a degenerate villain they’d only been assigned to contact (“We had been found guilty of having consciences,” as Morgan puts it). At the prison, they’re to meet torture master Ashraf Azziz and take charge of the interrogation of Nasir Kabir, who’s been rumored to have led “the Al Qaeda infiltration of Basra” and looked “more like Antonio Banderas than Omar Sharif”. The three agents have a smooth, well-practiced professional relationship characterized by both obscene banter and sincere respect for each other’s lethal capabilities, while they bond over Jameson and beer. But what they find at Abu Zaabal shocks even their jaded sensibilities (“It was as if light had vanished from the earth and humanity had been replaced by something from a black dimension”). The hard-edged book’s plot hits the ground running and immediately increases its momentum by having the three friends summarily kill both Kabir and Azziz in disgust and successfully make their escape before local authorities can apprehend them. The trio boards a jet to Yemen to facilitate a swap of high-value detainees, meeting a tough-as-nails operative there named Smith, whose beauty matches her competence in the field. Summary
An adrenaline-filled war story that depicts the challenges of military special operations in a dangerous, boulder-filled landscape. The Company has a special secret operation planned for one of their top agents: the leaders of the Taliban and al-Qaeda terrorist groups are hiding out in Pashtun country, and they must be eliminated. The job falls to a man they have named Frank Morganan agent who stood out as a recruit at Quantico and whose skills resemble those of the legendary Vietnam assassin. The other soldiers claim Frank’s abilities as a sniper and a tracker border on the supernatural and are more than willing to complete this mission with him. Frank begins his adventure in Afghanistan with another Company-appointed soldier: An indestructible lyrical Irishman with a cutting sense of humor and a bottle of Jameson never far from hand. After the men rescue a burqa-clad young woman, they soon discover that the Company has not been honest with them and decide to take a second mate under their winga giant who quotes poetry and rap songs while he both enacts torture and lives through his own agonizing trials. They know now that oil, drugs, and greed have led to this quest; assassinating the terrorists is not their main objective. However, this still must be done. After becoming dangerously acquainted with the heroin business in the frontier provinces, Frank and his comrades continue their mission. But the lines have now blurred, and the assignment is more complicated than they expected.
