Summary

Do you want to listen to Common Sense? If so then keep reading.... Common Sense is the timeless classic that inspired the 13 Colonies to fight for and declare their independence from Great Britain in the summer of 1776. Written by famed political theorist Thomas Paine, this pamphlet boldly challenged the authority of the British government and the royal monarchy to rule over the American colonists. By using plain language and a reasoned style, Paine chose to forego the philosophical and Latin references made popular by the Enlightenment era writers. As a result, Paine united average citizens and political leaders behind the central idea of independence and transformed the tenor of the colonists’ argument against the British.  As the best-selling American title of all time, Common Sense has been eloquently described by historian Gordon S. Wood as "the most incendiary and popular pamphlet of the entire revolutionary era."   Thomas Paine (1737-1809) was an English-American political activist, philosopher, and revolutionary. As one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, he authored the most influential pamphlets at the start of the American Revolution and inspired the colonists to declare independence from Great Britain in 1776. His ideas reflected the Enlightenment-era rhetoric of transnational human rights and the separation of church and state. He has been called a corset-maker by trade, a journalist by profession, and a propagandist by inclination.   What are you waiting for Common Sense is one click away, start listening now!

Common Sense

Summary

"...well orated by reader George Vafiadis. The language and sentiment are not as outmoded as some listeners might expect and it definitely feels patriotic to hear again the fundamentals of America's beginnings." (Kliatt Magazine) George Washington wrote, "I find that Common Sense is working a powerful change there (Virginia) in the minds of many men." The passion of the patriot Thomas Paine comes straight on and one can better understand the forces that shaped this country.    Thomas Paine was born in Thetford, England, in 1737. His father was a staymaker. Thomas worked as a tax collector and was let go for petitioning for higher pay. Benjamin Franklin encouraged him to emigrate to the United States in 1774, where he published a series of pamphlets called The American Crisis. In 1787 he went back to Europe and published political books that were publicly burned. He went to France and helped draft the French constitution. He was imprisoned for a year before coming back to the United States. He died in 1809.

Rights of Man

Summary

Written in 1791 as a response to Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France, Thomas Paine's Rights of Man is a seminal work on human freedom and equality. Using the French Revolution and its ideals as an example, he demonstrates his belief that any government must put the inherent rights of its citizens above all else, especially politics. After its publication, Paine left England for France and was tried in his absence for libel against the crown. The Age of Reason (AmazonClassics Edition)

Summary

Declaring the church corrupt and urging rationality over revelation, Thomas Paine’s The Age of Reason directly opposed the existing political and religious order of his time. Initially printed in pamphlet form, his work audaciously employed “vulgar” everyday language, as Paine sought to bring his message, and the appeal of deism, to the masses. “You will do me the justice to remember,” Paine said. More than merely remembered, his transformative teachings set the stage for what would become an enduring feature of the American Revolution: independent thought. Revised edition: Previously published as The Age of Reason, this edition of The Age of Reason (AmazonClassics Edition) includes editorial revisions.
