Summary

In early September, 1862, a freshly victorious Confederate Army led by master strategist General Robert E. Lee was poised at the doorstep of Washington D.C. Lee was determined to play his position to fullest advantage by carrying the war onto Northern soil for the first time. With the battle cry of "On to Maryland," Lee's ragged troops crossed the Potomac.
