This is a complete presentation on the workings of the human spirit and soul and body. The book aims at delivering people from the tyranny of self-life with its carnality and from the domination of the passions and lusts of the flesh. It attempts to lead them to the full salvation of Christ. It is not to be taken as a manual but as a guide to true spirituality. It is recommended that this three-volume work be listened to quickly once. Then, lay it aside and wait until the Holy Spirit leads one into a certain stage of spiritual life when knowledge and understanding are needed. Turn, then to the special section of the book dealing with that particular experience for enlightenment. Thus, it will be realized that in Thy light, shall we see light (Ps. 36:9). May God use this book to help people in their journeying towards the spiritual.

The greatest advantage in knowing the difference between spirit and soul, claims Watchman Nee, is in perceiving the latent power of the earth-bound soul and in understanding its falsification of the power of the Holy Spirit.

What is prayer? Are we really praying when we pray? Do we know the power of prayer? These matters and others must be understood if we would have a real prayer life and be effective in prayer. In this little volume of collected messages given over a long period of ministry by the author, and which are now translated and published in English for the first time, Watchman Nee shares with us the lessons on prayer that he has learned through the years. He considers prayer to be a mystery, though not something that is incomprehensible. He views prayer as the greatest work to which men are called. It is a working together with God. Through it, God's purpose is accomplished and Satan's intentions are broken. And its benefit to the one who prays is something great as well. Let us therefore follow the admonition of our blessed Lord, who said: "Rise and pray" (Luke 22.46).

Anyone who serves God will discover sooner or later that the great hindrances he has in the Lord's work is not others but himself. He will discover that his outward man (soul) is not in harmony with his inward man (spirit). Both tend to go toward two opposite directions from each other. He will also sense the inability of his outward man to submit to the inner control of his regenerated spirit. His greatest difficulty lies in his outward man, which hinders him from using his spirit. Each one of us has as much of the same "Jacob nature" in us. Our only hope is that the Lord may blaze a way out of us, breaking our outward man - breaking it to such a degree that the inward man may come out and be seen. This is precious! This is the way to serve the Lord.

Authority is a tremendous thing in the universe, nothing overshadows it. God's throne is established on His authority. God's authority represents God Himself. God alone is authority in all things; all the authorities of the earth are instituted by God. It is therefore important for us who desire to serve God to know the authority of God. God's authority is absolute, hence we must give Him absolute submission (our heart's attitude) and absolute obedience (our outward actions). But to His delegated authorities we can render absolute submission, but only relative obedience. For their authorities are circumscribed by the measure of the life of Christ in them. Only when they themselves submit to God's authority in them are they able to represent God. Hence there is much we have to learn about how to represent God.

In this volume, Watchman Nee opens up the subject of the spirit of wisdom and revelation by explaining Paul's famous prayer (Eph. 1:17) . It is necessary, he says, to have the spirit of wisdom and revelation if we are to know God at all.

Listen to the prayer of the apostle Paul for his beloved church in Philippi: "This I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and all discernment; so that ye may approve the things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and void of offence unto the day of Christ" (Phil. 1.9-10). What was it that inspired him to offer such a prayer for the dear saints in Philippi? Do we today desperately need the same prayer? We talk about love and fellowship, and yet we encounter many problems and failures. What is the missing link to a glorious church? Can it be the lack of "full knowledge and all perception that ye may prove [or, distinguish] the things that differ" (literal translation)? Certainly spiritual discernment is the pressing need of today. How can we obtain this full knowledge of God? Where do we get spiritual discernment that we may know the things which differ or are more excellent? These are the matters which brother Watchman Nee tried to address during his latter years of ministry. This present volume, entitled Spiritual Discernment is composed of three parts: Abound in Knowledge, Abound in Discernment, and Approve the Excellent. The publishers were able to acquire these notes in Chinese recently, and they have now been translated into English for sharing with the English-speaking saints. May these notes help many in meeting the pressing need of today.

This present volume is a compilation of various writings and addresses given by Watchman Nee in the early days of his ministry. The passage of time, however, only increases the urgency of these messages which are as relevant today, perhaps even more so, than at the time of their first delivery. Would that God's children might return to the cross and be true followers of Christ crucified. May the Church of God be re-awakened to her calling as the light in the world, holding forth the word of life. May she stand in the victory of Christ and bring back the King of kings and the Lord of lords.

Having every one of us been in bondage to sin, we readily believe that sinful things are Satanic; but do we believe equally that the things of the world are Satanic? Many of us, I think, are still in two minds about this. Yet how clearly Scripture affirms that "the whole world lieth in the evil one" (1 John 5:19). Satan well knows that, generally speaking, to try to ensnare real Christians through things that are positively sinful is vain and futile. They will usually sense the danger and elude him. So he had contrived instead an enticing network, the mesh of which is so skillfully woven as to entrap the most innocent of men. We flee sinful lusts, and with good reason, but when it comes to such seemingly innocuous things as science and art and education, how readily do we lose our sense of values and fall a prey to his enticements!

Watchman Nee's thesis in this book is that Christ came to mankind by way of the cross, and only by this same way can we know him. At the source of all spiritual things, he says, stands the cross.

"Ephraim is a cake not turned." (Hosea 7.8). This is a figurative way of saying "not balanced". The cake is burned on the one side, uncooked on the other; on one side it is overdone, on the other, totally undone. The cake is unfit to be eaten and is thus destined to be cast out. Our God is most balanced. He is love and he is light. Our Lord Jesus is full of grace and full of truth. The Holy Spirit is the spirit of wisdom as well as of revelation. In this audiobook, Watchman Nee attempts to show from God's word the perfect equilibrium of divine truth. Human nature, however, is prone to emphasize one side to the exclusion of the other side of truth. This has caused much confusion and many problems among God's people. It is essential that we know the balance of truth and hold on to both sides so that our Christian life may be well rounded as God has ordained. This audiobook opens with a treatment of the balance between the gate and the way, continues with a presentation of the balance between the objective and the subjective, includes a discussion on the work inward and the work outward in the Christian life, as well as on the rest given and the rest found as promised by Christ, contemplates the other side of prayer frequently neglected, namely, to watch, and concentrates on the other less emphasized aspect of the trespass-offering, that of restoration. The audiobook then provides a commentary on the contrast between the truly meek and the spiritually poor, and finally concludes with a consideration of the equilibrium that is so necessary between the believer's faith and the believer's walk. May all who listen to this volume be brought into a balanced Christian life.

God has his work. And this work is not your work or mine, nor the work of this mission or that group. It is God's own work. The church is called to be a co-worker with God. But can we labor with God if we are still ignorant of what His work is? Many today work for God, but who are working with God?

As we are quickly approaching the close of this age with the blessed hope in view of the dawning of a new age, even the millennium, it is no surprise that the hearts of God's children are increasingly drawn to the last book of the Bible, Revelation. Whereas in the past that book was shunned by most as not being understandable, now it is looked upon as a blessed book, just as it is written of it. Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of the prophecy, and keep the things that are written therein: for the time is at hand (Rev. 1.3). In the study of Revelation, however, there are certain, basic things one must know in order to understand this book. Although these writings belong to his early days, the light released remains nonetheless undiminished through the years since that time. They offer invaluable helps to all who love the word of God. In this present volume, then, the author deals with the attitude the believers should have towards the book of Revelation as well as the ways and means of understanding it. He presents the different schools of interpretation concerning Revelation and offers the key to its right interpretation. He touches upon the distinction between salvation and reward, the four kinds of judgment, and the spiritual significance of numerals in the Bible since these are essential to rightly dividing the word of truth. He compares the prophecies in Revelation with the other prophecies of the Bible, such as Daniel's human image and the 70 sevens, the Olivet prophecy of our Lord, and Paul's prophecy found in 2 Thessalonians. Finally, he summarizes the great events of the future as given in Revelation according to their respective times, and suggests a detailed outline of the book. May the Lord use this volume to help many to listen, to hearken, and to keep the things written in the book of Revelation.
