Summa Theologica consists of three main parts. The second part is divided in two, and this recording presents Prima Secundae - Part I of Part II. Taken in its entirety, Summa Theologica forms an essential contribution to the canon of Catholic doctrine and was written in the last decade of his life by Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274), an Italian-born Dominican friar. Although he died before completing it, the body of thought it contains is a continuing influence to the education and guidance of students of theology in the main Christian traditions. Prima Secundae comprises seven essential treatises on the subjects of: The last end Human acts Passions Habits Vice and sin Law Grace Within these treatises the writer considers a vast range of topics. In the Treatise on the Last End he explores and illuminates the Catholic understanding of human actions and related questions on reason and appetite design and causality. In the Treatise on Human Acts his subject is the will and the nature of good and evil. In the Treatise on the Passions he undertakes a detailed consideration of the nature and importance of the major feelings and emotions: love and hatred, concupiscence and delight, pain and sorrow, fear and daring, and anger. In the Treatise on Habits he examines the relationships existing between habits and their causes and effects as well as the nature and essence of the intellectual, moral, cardinal, and theological virtues. The treatise ends with a consideration of the beatitudes and blessings of the Holy Ghost. The Treatise on Vice and Sin deals with understanding the essential nature of vice and sin, the internal and external causes of sin, the role of human free will, the role of the devil, the corruption of nature, and the differences between venial and mortal sins and their corresponding punishments. The Treatise on Law compares and contrasts the various types of law: eternal, natural, human, and law as revealed in the Old and New Testaments with detailed consideration of ceremonial and judicial precepts. The Treatise on Grace considers its necessity essence cause and effects. As in the rest of Summa Theologica, the Prima Secundae is logically structured. Each main heading or question is subdivided into points of inquiry or numbered articles. Each article is then formulated as a series of numbered objections to the idea to be postulated, followed by their counter statements. Aquinas’ summation is preceded by the phrase ‘I answer that...’ which then clarifies the issue under discussion. There are also individual replies for further clarification where necessary. Long considered a classic text in philosophy and theology, Summa Theologica now offers the listener detailed expositions and considerations of the thinking of figures such as St. Paul (referred to as the Apostle) as well as non-Christian figures such as Aristotle (referred to as the Philosopher), Boethius, Muslim writers including Averroes (Ibn Rushd) (referred to as the Commentator) and Avicenna (Ibn Sina), and the Sephardic Jewish scholar Moses Maimonides (referred to as Rabbi Moses), among others. The translation used has been formally attributed to Fathers of the English Dominican Province, though it is generally accepted it was the work of one man: Father Laurence Shapcote. It is read with clarity and fluency by Martyn Swain. PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio.

"Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will declare what he has done unto my soul." (Psalm 66:16) This is a short and honest account of how God demonstrated his exceeding great mercy to his unworthy servant John Bunyan. This story specifically tells how Bunyan was converted. John Bunyan was a companion of sin and was troubled by sin. He fought temptation and sin in his own strength and lost, and in despair, he gave up hope of ever finding God’s mercy; but the Lord Jesus Christ at last delivered him from the guilt and terror that so often and so viciously troubled him. In addition to this, a short account of Bunyan’s call to the work of the ministry is told, along with the trials and trouble he encountered - including some of the difficulties he faced while in prison. This is all taken from his writings, and is now published for the encouragement and support of others who are weak and tempted and need strength and hope and victory in Jesus. About the author John Bunyan was born in November 1628, in Elstow, England. A celebrated English minister and preacher, he wrote The Pilgrim’s Progress (1678), the book that was the most characteristic expression of the Puritan religious outlook. His other works include doctrinal and controversial writings; a spiritual autobiography, Grace Abounding (1666); and the allegory, The Holy War (1682).

Does history matter? This book argues not that history matters, but that Islamic history does. This very short introduction introduces the story of Islamic history; the controversies surrounding its study; and the significance that it holds - for Muslims and for non-Muslims alike. Opening with a lucid overview of the rise and spread of Islam, from the seventh to 21st century, the book charts the evolution of what was originally a small, localized community of believers into an international religion with over a billion adherents. Chapters are also dedicated to the peoples - Arabs, Persians, and Turks - who shaped Islamic history, and to three representative institutions - the mosque, jihad, and the caliphate - that highlight Islam's diversity over time. Finally, the roles that Islamic history has played in both religious and political contexts are analysed, while stressing the unique status that history enjoys among Muslims, especially compared to its lowly place in Western societies where history is often seen as little more than something that is not to be repeated. Some of the questions that will be answered include: How did Islam arise from the obscurity of seventh century Arabia to the headlines of 21st-century media? How do we know what we claim to know about Islam's rise and development? Why does any of this matter, either to Muslims or to non-Muslims?

Was sagt die neuste Forschung dazu? The history of Jews in Spain and Portugal spans more than 1,000 years. By most measures, it is even longer than the large-scale settlement of Jews in the land of Israel, which was interrupted several times in Jewish history. Legends ascribe the arrival of the earliest settlers to the days of the biblical prophet Obadiah, but archeologically speaking, the first record of Jews is much later. This book includes an overview of Jewish life in the Iberian Peninsula from its early days through the Expulsion. It includes a special focus on the rise of the Conversos, Jews who were forcibly converted to Christianity.

At the beginning of the book of the Revelation of St. John, John was commanded to "write in a book what you see and send it to the seven churches". We know that these seven churches were named after cities in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey). From the Book of Revelation itself, we have St. John's description of each Church: 1) Ephesus (Rev. 2:1-7): having labored hard and not fainted, they separated themselves from the wicked. but are admonished for having forsaken their first love. 2) Smyrna (2:8-11): admired for their tribulation and poverty. 3) Pergamum (2:12-17): located where 'Satan's seat' is; and needs to repent of permitting false teachers. 4) Thyatira (2:18-29): known for their charity, whose "latter works are greater than the former", however, they tolerate the teachings of a false prophetess. 5) Sardis (3:1-6): despite their good reputation, they are dead; cautioned to fortify itself and come back to God by repentance. 6) Philadelphia (3:7-13): steadfast in the faith, keeping God's word and enduring. 7) Laodicea, near Denizli (see Laodicean Church) (3:14-22): lukewarm and insipid. However many more questions remain with regard to exactly what these churches and cities would have looked like. In this classic book, Sir William Mitchell Ramsay looks at the historical context of these letters, to give a sense of what the people and culture were like in the Graeco-Roman world of St. John's day.

Wicca is a Western neo-pagan religion, which empowers and surrounds itself with worshiping of nature. The Wiccan religion became one of the most widely followed and popular religions in the mid twentieth century. A large portion of this credit is owed to Gerald Gardner, who associated this religion with witchcraft and attracted an enormous amount of followers. One of the main philosophies of the Wiccan nature is that everyone live in peace and harmony with nature, without any trouble. They based this philosophy upon grounds that reasoned as follows: humans are a part of nature and can only survive if they coexist peacefully with its might. Wicca also encourages worship of women. This is due to their fascination with the mother goddess. This feminine principle is considered to be a fundamental value among Wiccans and respected equally by men and their women counterparts. It was believed that women Wiccans are strong and independent, mutually agreed upon by the male Wiccan community, as well. While traditionally, Wiccan texts and instructions paid more attention to the mother goddess, and as a result to women, modern religions and texts molded themselves to favor equality among the god and the goddess, which translates to the divine feminine and masculine. Wicca is packed as a religion which traditionally comprises of mystery, witchcraft, natural and ceremonial magic. Another one of the philosophies practiced by Wiccan men and women is the equal worshiping of the goddess and the horned god, which represents the dual nature of the universe (male-female, earth-sky, and so on). The Wiccan religion was hailed as one of the most popular religions in the mid-20th century. With its inclination toward equality and witchcraft, it gained a lot of movement and traction and attracted a large amount of followers. However, as Christianity developed, Wicca, like many other pagan religions, was persecuted. As inquisitions were carried out, witches were captured ruthlessly and burned upon huge bonfires. The traditions that kept the Wiccan flame alive were uprooted and discarded as Christianity expanded all over the globe. For instance, goddess Brigita, the goddess of fire, was hailed as one of their saints by Christianity, claiming that she was the midwife of the Virgin Mary. However, the flames of witchcraft and other Wiccan traditions could never be removed entirely as it is gaining a considerable amount of popularity among the young generation today. The magic associated with this ancient religion fascinates many young people around the world today. The goal of the audiobook is simple: to educate the listeners about the history of Wicca and self-initiation. You will also learn about: Wicca and its history The Wiccan philosophy Various types of witchcraft The benefits of witchcraft Wiccan calendar holidays Wiccans’ beliefs Wiccan ritual preparation Would you like to know more? The 1950s was a boom time for the Catholic Church in America, with large families of devout members providing at least one son or daughter for a life of religious service. Boston was at the epicenter of this explosion, and Bill Manseau and Mary Doherty, two eager young parishioners from different towns, became part of a new breed of clergy, eschewing the comforts of homey parishes and choosing instead to minister to the inner-city poor. Peter Manseau's riveting evocation of his parents' parallel childhoods, their similar callings, their experiences in the seminary and convent, and how they met while tending to the homeless of Roxbury during the riot-prone 1960s is a page-turning meditation on the effect that love can have on profound faith.Once married, the Manseaus continued to fight for Father Bill's right to serve the church as a priest, and it was into this situation that Peter and his siblings were born and raised to be good Catholics while they witnessed their father's personal conflict with the church's hierarchy. A multigenerational tale of spirituality, Vows also charts Peter's own calling, one which he tried to deny even as he felt compelled to consider the monastic life, toying with the idea of continuing a family tradition that stretches back over 300 years of Irish and French Catholic priests and nuns.It is also in Peter's deft hands that we learn about a culture and a religion that has shaped so much of American life, affected generations of true believers, and withstood great turmoil. Vows is a compelling tale of one family's unshakable faith that to be called is to serve, however high the cost may be.
