Gandhi the Man

Summary

This is the story of Gandhi's spiritual evolution - the turning points and choices that made him not just a great political leader but also a timeless icon of nonviolence. Eknath Easwaran grew up in India and witnessed how Gandhi inspired people of all races, backgrounds, and religions to turn anger into compassion and hatred into love. How had Gandhi transformed himself from an ineffective young lawyer into the Mahatma, the "great soul" who led 400 million ordinary men and women in their nonviolent struggle for independence? To find out, Easwaran visited Gandhi's ashram and watched the Mahatma absorbed in meditation on the Bhagavad Gita - the wellspring of Gandhi's spiritual strength. Easwaran, a leading authority on the Bhagavad Gita and on spiritual living, explains the principles underlying Gandhi's nonviolence. He highlights how we can all use Gandhi's teachings to make our families, workplaces, and communities more peaceful in the world today. This audiobook is a complete narration of Easwaran's Gandhi the Man but excludes the short Foreword, and the Afterword ("How Nonviolence Works") that are by other writers.

99 Thoughts on Ganesha

Summary

In the game of cricket, having scored 99 runs, when a bats-man stands poised on the threshold of that much coveted century, he experiences the moment that is best associated with Ganesha. Fear and uncertainty envelope him; between him and his achievement stand hurdles, both real and imaginary: a possible spin from the bowler can overwhelm him, his own anxiety can paralyze him, cheering fans can distract him. He needs divine intervention then. He needs to focus, get rid of all hurdles, perform, get the final run, and achieve what he so longs for. In other words, he needs to think of Ganapati.  This book brings together 99 meditations to better understand the stories, symbols and rituals of that adorable elephant-headed Hindu god who removes hurdles and brings prosperity and peace. Known variously as Ganapati, Gajanana, Vinayaka or Pillayar, he can help all of us score a century in the game called life.

The Pursuit of Power and Freedom

Summary

The wisdom of the Katha Upanishad is revealed in the story of a young boy Nachiketa, who compelled the Lord of Death to reveal the secret of what happens after we die.  Nachiketa wants to know the answers to life’s most enduring questions: What happens after we die? How can we find true happiness? What is truly worth having? What is the nature of reality?  Step by step, testing Nachiketa’s preparedness for the highest truth, the Lord of Death ultimately imparts brahma vidya, the science and knowledge of the highest truth, to his student.  Divided into three sections - extensive commentary, English translation, and Sanskrit text with transliteration - The Pursuit of Power and Freedom is a valuable reference both for scholars and for those beginning their study of the Upanishads.

The Bhagavad Gita 101

Summary

The Bhagavad Gita (or “Song of God”) is one of the richest, most complete, and most important spiritual works ever composed. Its teachings have been a timeless source of inspiration, wisdom, and guidance for over a thousand years. The Gita (as it is affectionately known) is laid out as the story of a regular person Arjuna, who has become despondent after coming to see life as a meaningless, pointless, and never-ending struggle.  Arjuna is ready to quit. Sound familiar? Krishna (a mysterious friend and hero of the story) comes to Arjuna in his time of need and counsels him on the meaning of life as well as the path that leads to purpose and deliverance.  What does Arjuna find at the end of his journey? Meaning. Tranquility. Enlightenment. Because the struggles Arjuna faced and suffered from are the same as those we face today, the teachings of the Gita are every bit as pertinent in our era as they were over a thousand years ago when it was first recorded. I designed my version of this enduring classic to be concise, modern, and accessible to all listeners, even those with no prior knowledge of Hindu philosophy.  “We behold what we are, and we are what we behold.” (The Bhagavad Gita) Scroll up and discover the majesty of the Gita for yourself!

Summary

Rarely in a lifetime does a new spiritual classic appear that has the power to change people's lives and transform future generations. This is such a book. The Essence of the Bhagavad Gita: Explained by Paramhansa Yogananda shares the profound insights of Yogananda, author of Autobiography of a Yogi, as remembered by one of his few remaining direct disciples, Swami Kriyananda. This revelation of India's best-loved scripture approaches it from an entirely fresh perspective, showing its deep allegorical meaning as well as its down-to-earth practicality. The themes presented are universal: how to achieve victory in life in union with the divine; how to prepare for life's "final exam", death, and what happens afterward; and how to triumph over all pain and suffering.

Summary

He alone teaches who has something to give, for teaching is not talking, teaching is not imparting doctrines, it is communicating. The present upheaval of the spiritual tide, the waves of which, traversing nearly half the world, have touched the shores of America, was produced by the Christlike character and divine personality of Bhagavân Srî Râmakrishna - revered and worshiped in India today as an ideal manifestation of the divine glory.  His life was so extraordinary and unparalleled that within 10 years after his departure from earth, it aroused the admiration, wonder, and reverence not only of all classes of people in his own country, but of many distinguished English and German scholars of the 19th century.

The Book of Dharma: Making Enlightened Choices

Summary

The ancient texts of India speak of a “knowledge for kings, guarded by kings”. The Book of Dharma charts Simon Haas’ journey to India and his “excavation” of the dharma code: a powerful system for making enlightened choices and manifesting our highest potential. Haas apprenticed with an elderly master practitioner in the Bhakti tradition for 16 years and learned from him the system formerly used by kings and queens to effect personal transformation in their lives and rule wisely.   Sun Tzu’s The Art of War and Niccolò Machiavelli’s The Prince were written specifically for rulers. While these works have become renowned, the teachings for kings and queens from India remain, to this day, largely undiscovered. In this groundbreaking audiobook, Haas discloses these teachings for contemporary Western listeners, for the first time openly revealing a knowledge that has been passed down in secrecy in a sacred tradition for millennia.

Summary

Paramhansa Yogananda was the first yoga master of India whose mission it was to permanently live and teach in the West. In the 1920s, as he criss-crossed the United States on what he called his "spiritual campaigns", his enthusiastic audiences filled the largest halls of America. His initial impact was truly impressive. But his lasting influence is greater still. This audiobook, the version of which was first published in 1946, helped launch a spiritual revolution in the West. Only rarely does a sage of Paramhansa Yogananda's stature write a firsthand account of his life experiences. Followers of many religious traditions have come to recognize Autobiography of a Yogi as a masterpiece of spiritual literature. Yet, for all its depth, it is full of gentle humor, lively stories, and practical common sense. Now, with this audiobook, the 1946 edition is again available, with all its inherent power, just as the great master of yoga first presented it.

Summary

What Hinduism needed, amidst the general disintegration of the modern era, was a rock where she could lie at anchor, an authoritative utterance in which she might recognize her self. And this was given to her in these words and writings of the Swami Vivekananda. What Hinduism had needed was the organizing and consolidating of its own idea. What the world had needed was a faith that had no fear of truth. Both these are found here. Nor could any greater proof have been given of the eternal vigour of the Sanâtana Dharma, of the fact that India is as great in the present as ever in the past, than this rise of the individual who, at the critical moment, gathers up and voices the communal consciousness.

The Path

Summary

The Path is a fascinating story of one man's search for the truth. J. Donald Walters (also known as Swami Kriyananda) recounts how, as a young man, he examined and discarded as false many of the promises offered by modern society. Gradually he realized that lasting human happiness comes not from outer success but from deepening spiritual awareness. Eventually, his searching brought him to the door of one of the spiritual giants of this century, Paramhansa Yogananda ( Autobiography of a Yogi). What ensued was Donald Walter's spiritual training under Yogananda, who showed him a clear path to the attainment of spiritual ideals through the practice of the science of deep yoga meditation. The yoga philosophy and way of life are explained vividly through over 400 stories and sayings from Walters' experience of living with Yogananda. Living the spiritual life, as a close disciple of Yogananda eventually inspired Walters to found a spiritual community and worldwide movement, so as to better share with others Yogananda's principles and teachings. The Path offers a wealth of practical and inspirational wisdom. Indeed, it holds for those seeking it the transforming power of a true spiritual classic.

After a lifetime of metaphysical study and practice, a journalist joins a diverse community of joyful spiritual pioneers in a remote British Columbia valley. There, she, her family, and her neighbors explore the down-to-earth application of the Bhagavad-gita's profound and beautiful teachings. Along with comic and cosmic challenges, these daring individuals harvest the Gita's rich and relevant guidance - guidance suited for any time, place, and circumstance.

"A marvelous job...an inspirational memoir and a pleasant reminder that there is a spiritual side to our existence." (Five-star review, Susan Sewell for Readers' Favorite)

"In the morning, I bathe my intellect in the stupendous and cosmogonical philosophy of the Bhagavad-gita in comparison with which our modern world and its literature seem puny and trivial." (Henry David Thoreau, American poet, philosopher, and naturalist)

"Bhagavad-Gita is one of the most beautiful and profound texts of world literature." (Octavio Paz, Mexican poet and diplomat; Nobel Prize in Literature)

(Annie Besant, British socialist, theosophist, activist, writer, and orator)

"Those who meditate on the Gita will derive fresh joy and new meanings from it every day." (Mohandas (Mahatma) Gandhi)

Summary

For centuries, people have turned to the Bhagavad Gita for inspiration and guidance as they chart their own spiritual paths. As profound and powerful as this classic text has been for generations of seekers, integrating its lessons into the ordinary patterns of our lives can ultimately seem beyond our reach. Now, in a fascinating series of reflections, anecdotes, stories, and exercises, Ram Dass gives us a unique and accessible road map for experiencing divinity in everyday life. In the engaging, conversational style that has made his teachings so popular for decades, Ram Dass traces our journey of consciousness as it is reflected in one of Hinduism's most sacred texts. The Gita teaches a system of yogas, or "paths for coming to union with God." In Paths to God, Ram Dass brings the heart of that system to light for a Western audience and translates the Gita's principles into the manual for living the yoga of contemporary life. While being a guide to the wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita, Paths to God is also a template for expanding our definition of ourselves and allowing us to appreciate a new level of meaning in our lives.

Summary

Winner of the 2017 Nautilus Gold Book Award! The wisdom of the Mahavidyas, the 10 wisdom goddesses who represent the interconnected darkness and light within all of us, has been steeped in esoteric and mystical descriptions that made them seem irrelevant to ordinary life. But with this book, written by a respected cardiologist who found herself on a spiritual search for the highest truth, you're invited to explore this ancient knowledge and learn how it can be applied to daily struggles and triumphs-and how it can help you find unreserved self-love and acceptance. Pulling from Eastern traditions including tantra and yoga, and focusing on the feminine principle of divine energy also known as Shakti, this book bridges the divide between dualistic concepts and non-dual philosophy. By exploring the symbolism of the Mahavidyas (Kali, Tara, Tripurasundari, Bhuvaneshwari, Tripura Bhairavi, Chinnamasta, Dhumavati, Baglamukhi, Matangi, and Kamalatmika) - each with a veiled face representing a destructive quality that perpetuates ignorance and suffering, and a true face representing the wisdom that stimulates profound transformation and liberation - you'll learn to embrace and incorporate every aspect of who you are.

Summary

This little book appeals, perhaps, to the Eastern rather than to the Western type of mind, but so many souls trained in the East are now being reincarnated in the West that it may find friendly [listeners] away from the land of its birth. Addressed to a purely Hindu audience, the lectures contain many common Samskrit words, familiar to every Hindu, that may sound strange in the ears of [listeners] of other faiths; but it seems better to retain them, for those who object to them will object to the whole Eastern coloring of the booklet, and the changing of a few words would not shape the lectures to meet their views. To some, it will carry a message deeper and sweeter than the more conventional and colder West is yet ready to welcome. For such souls it was spoken; let others pass it by. Annie Besant

The search for higher truth must be conducted in the midst of the forces of life, with all its demands and seductions. So teaches The Bhagavad Gita, an ancient text that has been called the quintessence of the spirituality of India. In it, the great warrior Arjuna contemplates the meaning of life, just moments before entering the battlefield. "Why do I exist? Why should I fight against my loved ones? Summary

The world today is full of modern conveniences meant to make life easier and better. Every day, it seems, some new thing comes along that is touted as the next best thing that everyone needs in their lives. And as with everything else in the world, science and medicine have made great strides in fighting illness and in ways to keep people healthier for longer periods. But is it really working? Is life getting better, or is it just getting more complicated? Because for all of the new treatments and new inventions that exist, it seems that people are continuously looking for another, newer, better method for regaining and maintaining health and well-being. So maybe the answer does not lie only in the scientific world. Maybe the answer lies somewhere deeper, somewhere more basic, somewhere in an area older than time itself. Maybe the answer lies deep inside the person and not outside in some as yet unknown area. Maybe the answer lies in the chakras. Chakras are centers of energy located inside the body that assist in regulating all of the processes in the human. Chakras assist with everything from emotional responses to the immune system to the proper functioning of the internal organs. Chakras assist with neurological and physiological functioning in the human body. Each individual chakra has its own frequency that it vibrates to control the functioning of the body. The constant flow of energy keeps the systems balanced within the human body. If one chakra is out of balance by flowing energy at a rate that is either too much or too little, it will show itself as diseases and illnesses that plague the body and drag down the lifestyle everyone wants to achieve. And that is a style of life that includes the ability to come and go as one pleases, to be as active as one pleases, and to feel as good physically and mentally as one desires to feel. The energy of the force of life should flow freely through the mind and body and soul of everyone, and it can if the chakras are well-balanced and healthy. And balancing and healing the chakras is not a complicated thing to do.  Many different methods can be used to balance and heal the chakras and keep them working to optimum efficiency so that the chakras can contribute to a long and happy life. And this is the book that will show how to keep the chakras healthy. And since positive influence is always the best, the book also shows how to rebalance the chakras and how to keep them healthy with various methods that have been proven effective over thousands of years. Open this book and discover how everyday life can be so much better simply by spending some time on chakra healing and balancing to make the overall mind/body/spirit connection better. Improving one's life through chakra healing is a simple thing to do and will dramatically improve the caliber of anyone's life. In this book, you will learn more about: The Seven Chakras The Base or Root Chakra The Sacral Chakra The Solar Plexus Chakra The Heart Chakra The Throat Chakra The Third Eye Chakra Sahasrara - The Crown Chakra

The Rig Veda

Summary

Often appearing as ?gveda, the oldest of the four sacred books linked to Hinduism, it was composed in an ancient form of Sanskrit about 1500 BCE. The Rig Veda (Sanskrit: The Knowledge of Verses) was preserved in secrecy by ancient clans, initially orally, before it was written down about 300 BCE.  These 1028 poems, grouped as 10 ‘Circles’ (mandalas), have variously been called hymns, poems or songs by Sanskrit scholars. The Rik (so pronounced by the ancient Angirases clans, or Seer-Priest families) was an experiment with sound. The emphasis is always on sounding the words perfectly. The focus tends to be on the ideas rather than on the authors in Vedic literature, they are largely religious in nature, reflecting the world view and spiritual preoccupations of ancient India.  Like the Homeric epics, portions were composed during different periods in the north-western region of present-day India and Pakistan. That any of these verses have entered modern day usage is in itself extraordinary. No Hindu wedding is performed without reference to the Suryasukta, the model marriage of the Sun to the daughter of the Moon (Book 10, hymn 85). In India today certain surnames denote whether a family has a Vedic link, Dwivedi (knowledge of two vedas) Trivedi (three), Chaturvedi (four) among other Vedic linked ancestral roots. Very, very few had open access to this the Secret most Magical Veda.  The writers or composers of the Vedic verses were essentially storytellers. Once they had told their stories enough times they began to believe in the mythology they had woven to explain the vagaries of the universe. The sudden flood, the torrential downpour, the landslides that killed life-giving cattle and the forest fires that consumed all it touched, the quaking earth or sudden drought, all of which disarrayed an agrarian community. In comparison with other ancient belief systems the magical practice contained herein link with the Judaic tradition. A social order is seen evolving its supremacy with ritual practice. A strong priestly bias exists as the Seer-Priests monopolised transmitting them.  This present translation is based on the first poetic version in the English language by Ralph T. Griffith (1896) and revised and modernised for this Ukemi recording. The more explicitly worded verses (avoided by Griffith!) have been newly translated by Anwesha Arya to make this Rig Veda complete, as it was meant to be chanted and heard. Translator Anwesha Arya comes from within the tradition of Rgvedic priests. Sagar Arya reads expertly, responding to the varying character of the verses and observing, in spirit, the ritual background of The Rig Veda.

Summary

What Hinduism needed, amidst the general disintegration of the modern era, was a rock where she could lie at anchor, an authoritative utterance in which she might recognize her self. And this was given to her, in these words and writings of the Swami Vivekananda. What Hinduism had needed, was the organizing and consolidating of its own idea. What the world had needed was a faith that had no fear of truth. Both these are found here. Nor could any greater proof be given of the eternal vigour of the Sanâtana Dharma, of the fact that India is as great in the present as ever in the past, than this rise of the individual who, at the critical moment, gathers up and voices the communal consciousness. This is Volume 2 of the complete works.

Upanishads

Summary

Learn about Hinduism by listening to its most important texts - the Upanishads! Have you always been interested in Hinduism but didn’t know where to start? The Upanishads are ancient texts explaining mediations, philosophy, and spiritual ideas of Hinduism. The Vedas are the core scriptures of Hinduism. In Sanskrit, "Veda" translates to knowledge. These texts offer exactly that - timeless, ancient knowledge and an understanding of some of the highest ideas mankind has ever had.  The Upanishads represent the oldest and most revered part of the Vedas. They are the beating heart of Hinduism thought and practice. For centuries, these texts were memorized and passed through generations by oral transmission. They predate Buddhism and Christianity and fascinate both Western and Eastern modern philosophers. Two central topics covered by the Upanishads are concepts of brahman and atman. Brahman represents the all-pervasive fabric of our reality. It’s timeless, infinite, and eternal, the truth that never changes but causes all change. All existence is described by brahman, manifested or not. It’s formless, but contains all forms. Atman, on the other hand, signifies the inner self, what we call the soul. It’s the immortal essence of all living beings, humans, animals, and trees. The Upanishads state that the true self of a person is not to be found in their body, mind, or ego - the true self is always atman. As such, it’s eternal and at the core of every being. The relationship between brahman and atman is discussed throughout the Upanishads and by Hindu philosophers ever since. Some say they are the absolutely same; some say they are the same, but different. Since they were translated in the 19th century, the Upanishads have fascinated and impressed the Western minds. There’s no source better to reveal the wisdom of Hinduism, its philosophy, and spiritual practices.

Spiritual Hindu Tales to Calm Your Mind

Summary

This audiobook contains a collection of spiritual tales designed to calm your mind and help you experience the Power of Now. These selected stories prove that the basic teachings of ancient Hinduism share the same elementary truths than those presently taught by Eckhart Tolle, as evidenced by the writings of Swami Sivananda, Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda, Ramana Maharshi, and other renowned Hindu masters. As you will see, both teachings are based on the notions of the illusory world, the ego, the "mental chatter", the self, inner peace, and enlightenment, as well as the importance of meditation and learning to live in the now. Summary

Deepen your practice with this audio journey into the source-language teachings of yoga  Yoga practitioners know there’s more to the path than asana, or physical postures - but how do we access the deeper wisdom of yogic philosophy?  More than 2,000 years ago, the legendary master Patanjali answered this question in 195 pearls of insight known as the Yoga Sutras. Now Sanskrit and Ayurveda teacher Nicolai Bachman offers The Yoga Sutras, an audio program with a fresh approach to working with Patanjali’s seminal text for guidance and inspiration on your own journey toward clarity and happiness.   Why do we react the way we do in certain situations? How can suffering be an opportunity for growth? Why are nonviolence and truth important to a student? Patanjali’s sutras offer an illuminating perspective on these questions and more.   To help integrate this wisdom into our modern life, Bachman offers a unique approach. Instead of reading each sutra sequentially from beginning to end, he focuses on and discusses 51 key concepts. By exploring these principles and learning to chant the sutras in Sanskrit, the essence of yogic philosophy is revealed - helping us open to its heart and soul.   The Yoga Sutras invites you to discover a variety of practical tools and heartfelt insights for transforming your practice, including:  Six sessions full of insights to further your learning about yoga’s essential principles A guided reading of the complete sutras with pronunciation instructions for following along Key concepts for understanding the social, religious, and historical context of the sutras Teachings on humility, the inner light of awareness, the nature of suffering, the importance of nonviolence, the meaning of liberation, and much more As you immerse yourself in Patanjali’s sutras, the heart of yoga - and what yoga means for you personally - will unveil itself in new and profound ways. Whether you’re a seasoned teacher or a student looking to go deeper with your practice, this essential course offers a treasury of teachings to help realize the “outer joy and inner happiness” of yoga. Summary

This universe of ours, the universe of the senses, the rational, the intellectual, is bounded on both sides by the illimitable, the unknowable, the ever unknown. Herein is the search, herein are the inquiries, here are the facts; from this comes the light which is known to the world as religion. Essentially, however, religion belongs to the super-sensuous and not to the sense plane. It is beyond all reasoning, and is not on the plane of intellect. It is a vision, an inspiration, a plunge into the unknown and unknowable, making the unknowable more than known for it can never be “known”. This search has been in the human mind, as I believe, from the very beginning of humanity. There cannot have been human reasoning and intellect in any period of the world’s history without this struggle, this search beyond.  In our little universe, this human mind, we see a thought arise. Whence it arises, we do not know; and when it disappears, where it goes, we know not either. The macrocosm and the microcosm are, as it were, in the same groove, passing through the same stages, vibrating in the same key. I shall try to bring before you the Hindu theory that religions do not come from without, but from within. It is my belief that religious thought is in man’s very constitution, so much so that it is impossible for him to give, up religion until he can give up his mind and body, until he can give up thought and life. As long as a man thinks, this struggle must go on, and so long man must have some form of religion. Thus, we see various forms of religion in the world. It is a bewildering study; but it is not, as many of us think, a vain speculation. Amidst this chaos, there is harmony, throughout these discordant sounds, there is a note of concord; and he who is prepared to listen to it will catch the tone. Swami Vivekananda

Summary

The Upanishads are among the oldest of the Indian wisdom texts, the records of teaching sessions of illumined sages and their students, who were asking the fundamental questions of life. Easwaran's translation of these classic texts has been highly acclaimed, and in these informal talks to close students he draws out the main themes of eleven Upanishads - themes such as strengthening willpower, mastering our senses, reducing self-will, developing lasting, loving relationships, exploring the deeper levels of consciousness, and overcoming the fear of death. He illustrates his typically penetrating insights with analogies, entertaining anecdotes, references to mystics and spiritual teachers from East and West. Easwaran explains that the Indian scriptures express one supreme, eternal law: if we live for others, in complete harmony with all life, in our homes, at work, and in our communities, we will find abiding happiness and fulfilment. To erase all selfishness from our hearts requires more courage and endurance, Easwaran says, than climbing the Himalayas - and he conveys vividly the joy and exhilaration of the spiritual life. Meditation and the repetition of the mantram (or mantra) are essential for those who choose to take on these challenges, and Easwaran refers to these disciplines frequently. Anyone who is new to these spiritual practices might find it helpful to listen first to Easwaran's talk Meditation.

Bhagavad Gita

Summary

Dating by tradition to the year 3,139 B.C., the Bhagavad Gita is the essence of Vedic knowledge and is considered by eastern and western scholars alike to be among the greatest spiritual books the world has ever been given. In a clear and wonderful way, Lord Krishna describes the science of self-realization and the exact process by which a human being can establish their eternal relationship with God. In terms of pure, spiritual knowledge, the Bhagavad Gita is incomparable. Its intrinsic beauty is that its knowledge applies to all human beings and does not postulate any sectarian ideology. It is approachable from the sanctified realms of all religions and is glorified as the epitome of all spiritual teachings. The primary purpose of the Bhagavad Gita is to illuminate for all of humanity the realization of the true nature of divinity; for the highest spiritual conception and the greatest material perfection is to attain love of God! This translation is by noted Theosophist, William Q. Judge.

Summary

If you have listened to my other books you know that I recommend the use of mantras as a vehicle for magick. They are very powerful and oftentimes easy to recite. In my other books that deal with mantras I provide a bonus chapter on something called Siddhi. I have been asked several times to go into greater depth about this and so I have decided to write this text. By attaining Siddhi, while using a mantra, you are literally embodying the power of that mantra. You will have the mantra's power. For example, if you are looking to attract material abundance, the seed mantra for that is "shreem". If you recite "shreem" 10,000 times, you will attain the essence of that Supernatural power. You will be able to recite "shreem" and attain your material goals easily. You will be a magnet, as it were. You will attain supernatural powers. In this book, we will discuss, in greater depth, what Siddhi is. After that, I will present a few powerful mantras and provide you the exact number of recitations you will need to attain Siddhi. Not all mantras have the same recitation count. I will also provide helpful tips on how to keep track of your recitations and most importantly, we will discuss the immense responsibility given you once you achieve Siddhi. Do not take this lightly, as once you achieve Siddhi for any given mantra, you will possess that power.

Summary

Ganesha also known more commonly in the west as Ganesh, is one of the most beloved, if not the most beloved deities in Hinduism. He is best known for his ability to help people remove obstacles in their lives. Although this I my first book on Ganesh, I have taught people the Ganesh mantras and they have used it with great success. I have received several emails stating that the Ganesh mantra added that extra spark they needed in their lives. Not only did it take their mantra work to a new level, some also used it in conjunction with western magick and he came through for them. Ganesh has an elephant head and this fact makes him very easy to recognize. However, what he is most known for his willingness and ability to help people remove obstacles in their lives. In addition to that, he is also a patron of the arts and sciences and has been known to help people with these fields as well. He is so effective that his worship can be found outside of Hinduism as well. Jains and Buddhists are also known to have devotion towards him. Although I do not have a main practice to Ganesh, I have used his power several times and can attest to his efficacy as can so many people not only in my sphere but the millions around the world.

Five Lectures on Reincarnation

Summary

As the human form, generally, corresponds to the human will, generally, so the individual bodily structure corresponds to the character, desires, will, and thought of the individual. Therefore the outer nature is nothing but the expression of the inner nature. This inner nature of each individual is what re-incarnates or expresses itself successively in various forms, one after another. It remains like a permanent thread stringing together the separate lives by the law of cause and effect. The subtle body is like a water-globule which sprang in the beginningless past from the eternal ocean of Reality; and it contains the reflection of the unchangeable light of Intelligence. As a water-globule remains sometimes in an invisible vapory state in a cloud, then in rain or snow or ice, and again as steam or in mud, but is never destroyed, so the subtle body sometimes remains unmanifested and sometimes expresses itself in gross forms of animal or human beings, according to the desires and tendencies that are ready to manifest. It may go to heaven, that is, to some other planet, or it may be born again on this Earth. It depends on the nature and strength of one's life-long tendency and bent of mind. This idea is clearly expressed in Vedanta. "The thought, will or desire which is extremely strong during lifetime, will become predominant at the time of death and will mould the inner nature of the dying person. The newly moulded inner nature will express in a new form". (Bhagavad Gîtâ.) The thought, will or desire which moulds the inner nature has the power of selecting or attracting such conditions or environments as will help it in its way of manifestation. This process corresponds in some respects to the law of "natural selection".

Summary

Shiva is one of the most mysterious gods of the Hindu pantheon. His energy can be found in all things, yet his tranquil and fierce energy can seem out of reach for some. His images often depict him in a meditative state or in his most common form, the Nataraja, or the one who dances within the circular fires that represent creation and dissolution. He is by far one of the most ancient of the Hindu gods, there are hints of him in the Vedas, and this form is often called "proto-Shiva". In his current incarnation he is part of the Hindu Trinity that is comprised of the gods Brahma and Vishnu. Shiva's name means "the auspicious one". Shiva is the god of creation, destruction, and regeneration. It is for this reason his mantras are so powerful; they are multipurpose and can serve the magician in any way he or she sees fit. Although most deities that I work with are female, Shiva is the only exception. He has been my patron for decades. I even have a tattoo of his image on my back. He is very close to me. Often Shiva is associated with unbridled sexuality, eccentricity, and nirvanic states. He has all these within himself. He is no doubt a figure that would be interpreted in the west as the embodiment of all that is evil, sinful, and dark. This reputation is not helped by the fact many of his followers are known to perform actions that are often shocking and even downright lewd. They do this not because they are degenerates, but because they are trying to prove a point. In many ways, Shiva is the god of the outcasts. Shiva will challenge you in ways other gods will not. He will force you to go deep into your nature. If you are not introspective, Shiva will and can be a nightmare for you. He will force you to break open. His mantras are often recited when people need help. All problems you may have, be they physical, mental or spiritual he can help you.

Today it is still one of the most widely read and respected books ever published on the wisdom of the East. This audio edition, featuring Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley's masterful narration, contains the complete text of Paramahansa Yogananda's life story, an absorbing account of a singular search for Truth. Summary

This universe of ours, the universe of the senses, the rational, the intellectual, is bounded on both sides by the illimitable, the unknowable, the ever unknown. Herein is the search, herein are the inquiries, here are the facts; from this comes the light which is known to the world as religion.  Essentially, however, religion belongs to the supersensuous and not to the sense plane. It is beyond all reasoning and is not on the plane of intellect. Whence it arises we do not know; and when it disappears, where it goes, we know not either. The macrocosm and the microcosm are, as it were, in the same groove, passing through the same stages, vibrating in the same key.

Summary

Summary

Shiva, 'the destroyer' among the Hindu trinity (of gods), is depicted in many contradictory manners. He is an ascetic who wears animal skin, his body smeared with ashes. Contradictory to his wild nature, he is also depicted as having a family, with a beautiful wife and two children. There are many more such varied representations of Shiva, the most prominent of these being the Linga and the Nataraja. The author, Devdutt Pattanaik, introduces listeners to these varied aspects and representations, and then sets about interpreting them. He explains the different anomalies and conflicts in beliefs, as well as the symbolism, rituals and reasons behind Hindu worship.

Summary

Srimad Bhagavatam is the most prominent of the Puranas, or histories of the Ancient World. The original Sanskrit text of the work, penned by the great sage Vyasadeva, says it is "as brilliant as the sun", because its teachings can illuminate our consciousness even in the darkest times. Much like the Arabian Nights, it has an intricate structure of stories within stories; epic tales of divine incarnations, saints, sages, gods and earthly kings that span vast periods of time. This volume introduces the foundational story; a conversation among many learned sages and yogis at the holy site of Naimisharanya.  Srimad Bhagavatam describes how the earth goes through cyclical ages not unlike the four seasons in a year. Five thousand years ago, the world entered the most terrible of the four ages, otherwise known as Kali Yuga, or the "Age of Quarrel and Hypocrisy". This era is characterized by terrific acts of violence such as large scale animal slaughter, systematic destruction of the planet's food supplies, and the merciless affliction of civilian populations by warlords and governments alike. All of this leads to escalating miseries as the dreadful age unfolds.  Aware of our impending plight through prophetic visions, the compassionate sages of Naimisharanya seek a way to help us. One of their number, Suta Goswami, goes in search of a solution and encounters a dialogue between an emperor cursed to die and a great mystic. From this discussion Suta discovers how anyone, no matter how drastic their circumstances, can transcend their misery and experience boundless joy by comprehending the science of God and the soul. He returns to the sages and faithfully repeats the secrets he has heard, and this becomes the Srimad Bhagavatam.  Described as the "literary incarnation of God", Srimad Bhagavatam elevates its sincere readers to pure spiritual consciousness, beyond the reach of all misery. It describes the living being as an eternal part of the all attractive Supreme Person, Krishna. We are not meant to suffer and Srimad Bhagavatam assures us that our pain will end when we properly apply the spiritual science it expounds. It is the most conclusive self-help book ever written, offering the reader the means to rise above all of the personal, interpersonal, national, and international problems we face today. Krishna Dharma, is the author of popular retellings of the Indian epics Mahabharata and Ramayana. With the assistance of his wife Chintamani Dhama Dasi, he now brings to life the greatest of India's spiritual classics without compromising its essential spiritual message.

Summary

For Hindus, Vishnu is God, who inspires man to discover humanity by engaging with the world. Artists have visualized him with as curlyhaired, dark complexioned man with a smile on his lips and a sparkle in his eyes. Draped in yellow silk, garlanded with forest flowers, bedecked with dolphin-shaped earrings, anointed with sandal paste, he reclines on a thousand hooded serpent that floats on an ocean of milk and rides a golden hawk bearing in his arms a conchshell, a wheel, a mace and a lotus. Poets say that when he is awake, the world takes shape; when he is asleep, the world ceases to be. Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, follows him wherever he goes. To him is made offerings of rich creamy butter. Sometimes, as the upright Ram, he is worshipped across India as Balaji, Shreenathji, Jagannath, Ranganath and Badrinath. Locked in the stories, symbols and rituals of Vishnu is the wisdom of the ancestors, transmitted over hundreds of years. This book attempts to unlock seven secrets that are relevant even in modern times.

Summary

Sanskrit for "Song of the Lord", the Bhagavad Gita is a 700-verse Hindu epic that constitutes part of the faith's vast cornerstone work, the "Mahabharata." The book provides timeless truths and indispensable advice for believers trying to overcome internal tensions, doubt and indecision. The teachings are conveyed in the form of a dialogue between the Pandava general Arjuna and the deity Krishna, who helps Arjuna understand his position in the Kurukshetra War, and guides him towards the right course of action. The Gita's treatment of duty and devotion has inspired many, including the peaceful activist Mahatma Gandhi, who referred to it as his "spiritual dictionary". It is also the first translation that speaks directly to men and women alike.

Listening to the Inner Sound

Summary

Listening to the inner sound to achieve higher states of consciousness has a long history and can be found in different religious traditions around the world (ranging from Gnostic Christianity to Islamic Sufism to Tibetan Buddhism). In this presentation, we will explore the originations of shabd yoga and trace it over time (in its various manifestations) up until the present day. In so doing, we will want to learn how listening to the inner sound is theologically interpreted in varying cultures on distinct continents.  Who would have imagined that a relatively unknown spiritual master living in Agra, India, from 1818-1878, would eventually influence the lives of millions around the world? Shiv Dayal Singh, the founder of Radhasoami, has had an impact on a number of disparate fronts, including religion, literature, music, education, industry, philosophy, consciousness studies, and even culinary habits. This book provides a brief overview of the impact that Shiv Dayal Singh (honorifically called "Soamiji Maharaj") has had in the spread of shabd yoga worldwide, as well as his ethical influence in the sphere of vegetarianism.

Summary

The epic tale of victory and defeat The story of the Ramayana had been told innumerable times. The enthralling story of Rama, the incarnation of God, who slew Ravana, the evil demon of darkness, is known to every Indian. And in the pages of history, as always, it is the version told by the victors that lives on. The voice of the vanquished remains lost in silence.  But what if Ravana and his people had a different story to tell? The story of the Ravanayana had never been told. Asura is the epic tale of the vanquished Asura people, a story that has been cherished by the oppressed outcastes of India for 3,000 years. Until now, no Asura has dared to tell the tale. But perhaps the time has come for the dead and the defeated to speak.  For thousands of years, I have been vilified and my death is celebrated year after year in every corner of India. Why? Was it because I challenged the gods for the sake of my daughter? Was it because I freed a race from the yoke of caste-based Deva rule? You have heard the victor's tale, the Ramayana. Now hear the Ravanayana, for I am Ravana, the Asura, and my story is the tale of the vanquished. I am a non-entity - invisible, powerless and negligible. No epics will ever be written about me. I have suffered both Ravana and Rama - the hero and the villain or the villain and the hero. When the stories of great men are told, my voice maybe too feeble to be heard. Yet, spare me a moment and hear my story, for I am Bhadra, the Asura, and my life is the tale of the loser. The ancient Asura empire lay shattered into many warring petty kingdoms reeling under the heel of the Devas. In desperation, the Asuras look up to a young saviour - Ravana. Believing that a better world awaits them under Ravana, common men like Bhadra decide to follow the young leader. With a will of iron and a fiery ambition to succeed, Ravana leads his people from victory to victory and carves out a vast empire from the Devas. But even when Ravana succeeds spectacularly, the poor Asuras find that nothing much has changed for them. It is when that Ravana, by one action, changes the history of the world.

Summary

When we think about Tibet, we are often taken back to the stories of the search for Shangri-La. We are beguiled by stories of men and women who spend their entire lives in meditation in hopes to achieve liberation from the ties that bind us here on this Earth. We are further in awe of those stories of the great mystics who, though Tibetan rituals, develop supernatural powers. All these stories have elements of truth in them. Rumors of this nature are often unconfirmed facts, as it were. Tibetan Buddhism is fascinating. It is by far the most mystical and most complex form of Buddhism throughout the spectrum of Buddhist sects. Most in popular culture associate it mostly with the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet. However, there is so much more to it, so much in fact that no single volume could ever capture the magic and the wonder of this great tradition. Like most Eastern traditions, Tibetan Buddhism has a rich tradition of mantra chanting and magick. Some of the rituals are so elaborate they can often intimidate the minds of those with entrenched Western sensibilities. A good way to pierce the mystery is to work with the mantras of this great tradition. In this book we will perform seven rituals using Tibetan mantras.

Summary

Everybody wants to be happy. Unfortunately, relatively few achieve bliss. Eli Jaxon-Bear explores how it is possible to achieve lives filled with gratitude and love. True happiness and meaning are achieved, he asserts, when we wake up, stop our minds, and open our hearts. It is then that we discover our true selves, our core identity that is part of the ultimate living intelligence of the universe, our true source. Like Gangaji, Jaxon-Bear uses a method of self-investigation called "self-inquiry". In the light of direct self-inquiry, limitations that once seemed to define ourselves are discovered to be more like transparent lines drawn on water. They exist only on the surface of consciousness in one's imagination. When these illusions of mind are clearly exposed, true limitless being reveals itself. This is a book that will appeal to those who are fans of Gangaji, Byron Katie, and Eckart Tolle. It is an articulate and helpful expression of a path to fulfillment for those wrestling with questions of identity and meaning.

Summary

Here we stand, and our eyes look forward sometimes miles ahead. Man has been doing that since he began to think. He is always looking forward, looking ahead. He wants to know where he goes, even after the dissolution of his body. Various theories have been propounded, system after system has been brought forward to suggest explanations. Some have been rejected, while others have been accepted, and thus, it will go on, so long as man is here, so long as man thinks. There is some truth in each of these systems.  There is a good deal of what is not truth in all of them. I shall try to place before you the sum and substance, the result, of the inquiries in this line that have been made in India. I shall try to harmonise the various thoughts on the subject, as they have come up from time to time among Indian philosophers. I shall try to harmonise the psychologists and the metaphysicians, and, if possible, I shall harmonise them with modern scientific thinkers also.

The Bhagavad Gita

Summary

This program is read by the author. The Bhagavad Gita: A Song of God Retold in Simplified English is the latest title in the Essential Wisdom Library.   This unique edition of the timeless epic is designed to be accessible for listeners without any prior experience of Hinduism. Not simply a translation of the original, Viljoen has simplified and restated the Gita’s complex ideas, so that a first-time listener can fully appreciate the scope and beauty of this magnificent Indian classic. Written in concise, modern language, the retelling vividly captures the power and depth of the original work.    Part of the Mahabharata, the Gita is a dialogue between Prince Arjuna and Lord Krishna. Its verses contain some of the key ideas of Hindu philosophy - Dharma, Moksha, and various yogic practices. Originally written well over a thousand years ago, the Gita has proven to be a timeless source of wisdom, inspiring philosophers and revolutionaries alike in the millennia since it was written.      In addition to the retelling of the text, this edition includes a character list, a glossary of important terms, and chapters exploring the backstory from the Mahabharata and the impact and meaning of the Bhagavad Gita itself.   The Bhagavad Gita is an approachable way for today’s listeners to engage with one of history's richest spiritual epics. Summary

From the many planets that abound in space, only one, besides our own, can be said to be the most important, and that is the Sun. It provides for every life that exists on this great earth. Without it, nothing would grow; nothing would live. It is for this reason the sun has been worshiped since the dawn of time. The ancients intuitively knew the Sun was the power behind life and the universe. Countless sun cults sprang up throughout spiritual texts. Most of these Sun-centric spiritual traditions are now just memories that fill dusty old books. There is only one world religion that still makes the God of the Sun the center of its universe, and that is Hinduism. We find in its sacred texts the god Surya, a good of unsurpassed power and glory. To many Hindus, he is the creator of the universe and the source of all that lives. He appears first in the Rigveda, the oldest spiritual text of Hinduism. In it, he is the defeater of darkness. So popular is he that for millions around the world, he is the first to be honored in the morning, either through ritual or through yoga. In this audiobook, we will discuss this wonderful being. I will take you through his 12 mantras. Each has its own power to change various aspects of your life, such as: Finding friendship and love Acquiring inner strength and fortitude Dispelling darkness in your life, no matter what the source  For health and well-being For the attainment of goals For wisdom, be it occult or mundane Just to name a few... I will also discuss a novel way to get in tune with the Sun while you chant Surya's mantras. It involves geomagnetic rhythms. By adding this one element, you will enhance not only your work with Surya, but all other magical and mantra practices you may already be doing.  I do hope you enjoy this audiobook. Gandhi's Story

Summary

Eknath Easwaran grew up in Gandhi's India and was deeply inspired by him. As a young man, he read Gandhi's weekly articles and visited his ashram, walking with Gandhi and observing him in deep meditation during his prayer service. What fascinated Easwaran was Gandhi's magnificent spiritual transformation - from a shy, ineffectual lawyer to the Mahatma, the "great soul" who led millions of Indians in their successful nonviolent struggle for independence.   In this series of talks given for the University of California at Berkeley, Easwaran tells the story of Gandhi's life, recounting the key events that led to Gandhi's spiritual evolution and the dramatic turn of events in India. Easwaran is a gifted storyteller and these talks are compelling, culminating with the account of Gandhi's assassination. The key message throughout comes from Gandhi himself: if we make the same effort he did, we too, in our own small way, can transform fear into fearlessness, anger into compassion, selfishness into selfless service for the world. Listen to these talks if you are interested in the spiritual side of Gandhi's life, in the concept and/or practice of nonviolence, or in spiritual living in general. As Easwaran points out, we need nonviolence now more than ever before. We need to practice Gandhi's teachings to build harmony in our homes and at our work, to restore peace in our communities and in the world today. Eknath Easwaran (1910-1999) is respected around the world as the originator of passage meditation and as an authentic guide to universal wisdom. More than 1.4 million copies of his books are in print around the world, including his spiritual biography, Gandhi the Man. Easwaran lived what he taught, giving him enduring appeal as an author and teacher of deep insight and warmth.

Universal Applications of Doctrine

Summary

Originally published in 1889, prominent theosophist and writer William Q. Judge addresses what he sees as failings in the Theosophical Society. He wants members to put their focus outward, toward humanity, instead of focusing, selfishly, on their own fates in life and after. He quotes from the Upanishads, discusses the astral light, and talks about karma, manvantara, and the theosophical concept of the Devachan (where souls go after death), among other things.

This work is, in the words of Madame Blavatsky, "meant for the few only". In the phraseology of this work, it is in-tended neither for those Ajnanis (or the worldly-minded), who welter in the sea of Samsara without being indifferent to the worldly things nor for those higher spiritual person ages who have reached a state of adeptship, so as to be above all advice. Hence it is written in the interests of those wbo have become indifferent to worldly things and crave for spirituality becoming a potent factor in their daily lives.

Kali Mantra Magick: Summoning The Dark Powers of Kali Ma (Mantra Magick Series Book 2)

Summary

WARNING: Please listen to this warning before you proceed to call upon Kali. Kali is fierce. Meaning, when you use her mantra you are invoking a fierce energy. Her energy is not subtle. The results can be rather dramatic. Kali, the dark mother of the Hindu pantheon is oft the most misunderstood Goddess in all human spiritual endeavor. Her images often depict her as being an evil and demonic force that few should ever dare call upon whilst others worship her as benign Goddess whom bestows blessings upon her supplicants. She is, in fact, both of these. Kali will challenge the stuffiness and properness you have acquired in this life. She will challenge who you think you are. She will spit in your face, she will push your buttons and will humble you. She will make you face your demons. Cut away your pride. She would be the one to push you into the deep end of the pool so you can learn to swim. She will show you the futility of your overly valued words and notions of yourself to which we all idolatrously worship.

The Ritual Unity of Roman Catholicism and Hinduism

Summary

C. Jinarajadasa was a writer, philosopher, prominent Theosophist of his day, as well as a Freemason. In this particular piece (originally published in 1915), the author takes a scholarly examination and ritual dissection of the Catholic Mass. Among the many topics that he discusses are: the creed, the altar, the vestments, the collect and epistle, commemoration of the dead, Prajapati, and more. He briefly speculates as to what the future of Masonic ritual might hold if the fraternity was to stay true to its initiatory origins, concerning the journey of the candidate. He finishes off with a comparison to the rituals of Hinduism. This should also be of interest to other spiritual traditions, which have a ritual Mass as part of their practice.

Mahavidya Mantra Magick

Summary

If you have heard the other books in the mantra magick series, you know I am a big proponent of Mantras and their magickal applications. Often you see mantras as separate practices from magick. It is my goal through my books to make mantras a mainstay in the western occult traditions. There is no reason they shouldn't be. After all, any occultist worth their salt will be aware that occult powers can be gleaned from many different traditions and that to be well rounded in other methods makes for a powerful practice. In this book, we will discuss the Mahavidya or the "great wisdoms" They are, in fact, 10 emanations of the divine Shakti; the great feminine divine that permeates the entire universe and which makes up much of the Hindu tradition. As I have stated in my other books, the divine feminine is of utmost importance in the eastern traditions. These 10 aspects are no exceptions. In fact, they embody the entire Shakti traditions as far as I am concerned. Why the Mahavidya? The Mahavidya represents as I stated the 10 aspects of the Shakti, from the horrific and blood-curdling goddess on one side and the gentile, soft goddess on the other. They represent the whole spectrum of the divine feminine and thus the universe. In this book, we will not only discuss, but we will learn to use these 10 aspects in our lives. Let us proceed.

A timeless treatise on what constitutes the Hindu way of life  Religion in India can appear to be a confusing tangle of myths, with many different gods and goddesses worshipped in countless forms. This complexity stems from a love of storytelling as much as anything else, but it is only the surface expression of Indian faith. Beneath can be found a system of unifying beliefs that have guided the lives of ordinary families for generations. Seed Mantra Magick: Master the Primordial Sounds of the Universe

Summary

The seed mantras that are in this book are the core sounds. These sounds have embedded into them the universal creative energies. They are potential power and do not have attributes such as "good" and "evil". These sounds transcend those human labels. However, it does not mean they cannot be used for both "good" and "evil". As I stated in other books, the universal energies are like electricity. They will manifest in the way they are guided. For example, plug in your computer and your lamp, and you will see they are using the same electricity, but it is manifesting differently in each object based on its intended use. If you stick your tongue in an electric socket, you will quickly learn that electricity will light you up as well. It's the same when you use these mantras. Mantras do not have morality issues; they are not biased; they are simply energies waiting to be guided, and guide them we shall.

Which is the correct reading? The third title in the bestselling Hindu Trinity series focuses on the goddess, and respected mythologist Devdutt Pattanaik tries to unravel the secrets locked within her stories, symbols and rituals.

The Inner Secret: Faqir Chand on Visions

Summary

There is no doubt in my mind that Faqir Chand is one of the most important shabd yoga masters in history and that his frank confessions of “unknowingness” are of vital importance for those interested in religion and spiritual masters. Faqir reveals what other gurus will not. Here in the MSAC Philosophy Group at Mt. San Antonio College, it is our wish to republish almost all of Faqir Chand's books and pamphlets in English and give them a wider audience. This book, The Secret of Inner Visions, contains judicious selections from Faqir's small book, The Essence of Truth. Since the latter book contains more or less verbatim transcriptions from several of Faqir Chand's satsangs, readers should be aware of its more vernacular and informal tone. Nevertheless, a close reading of Faqir Chand's radical thinking will undoubtedly have a liberating impact on the reader since he doesn't mince words.  One of the most refreshing aspects of Faqir's philosophy is that he readily admits that he doesn't ultimately know anything (similar to his Greek counterpart, Socrates, and the Chinese poet Lao Tzu) and that he is most open to being wrong. In all my many travels to India and my interviews with scores of shabd yoga teachers, I have never met a more honest and forthcoming spiritual teacher than Faqir Chand. He is perhaps the most straightforward guru in history.  In the early 1980s I coined the term the Chandian Effect, which describes in a nutshell what Faqir realized about inner visions and other miraculous incidents. Whenever a person has a spiritual vision of a holy man or woman, they invariably believe that such an apparition is real and manifests of its own accord. But according to Faqir Chand's realization, none of these visions are objectively real since they arise (even if unconsciously) from one's own mind and that the personage one beholds is ignorant about such a manifestation.

The Pregnant King

Summary

"‘I am not sure that I am a man,’ said Yuvanashva. ‘I have created life outside me as men do. But I have also created life inside me, as women do. What does that make me? Will a body such as mine fetter or free me?’" Among the many hundreds of characters who inhabit the Mahabharata, perhaps the world’s greatest epic and certainly one of the oldest, is Yuvanashva, a childless king, who accidentally drinks a magic potion meant to make his queens pregnant and gives birth to a son. This extraordinary novel is his story. It is also the story of his mother Shilavati, who cannot be king because she is a woman; of young Somvat, who surrenders his genitals to become a wife; of Shikhandi, a daughter brought up as a son, who fathers a child with a borrowed penis; of Arjuna, the great warrior with many wives, who is forced to masquerade as a woman after being castrated by a nymph; of Ileshwara, a god on full-moon days and a goddess on new-moon nights; and of Adi-natha, the teacher of teachers, worshipped as a hermit by some and as an enchantress by others. Building on Hinduism’s rich and complex mythology - but driven by a very contemporary sensibility - Devdutt Pattanaik creates a lush and fecund work of fiction in which the lines are continually blurred between men and women, sons and daughters, husbands and wives, fathers and mothers. Confronted with such fluidity the listener is drawn into Yuvanashva’s struggle to be fair to all - those here, those there, and all those in between.

Baba Faqir Chand's Illuminations: The London Satsangs of 1980

Summary

I am fortunate to be able to publish Baba Faqir Chand's satsangs as presented to Harjit Singh Sandhu and skillfully translated by Pulkit Bose. First as a series in Sach Khand: The Journal of Radhasoami Studies and now in book form. These talks that were given in London, England, in 1980 are genuinely remarkable for their utmost clarity and penetrating insights into the nature of spirituality.  Baba Faqir Chand is unique amongst masters, since he (unlike so many other gurus) was exceptionally honest about his experiences and what he learned from them over the course of his long life. Perhaps Faqir's most fundamental realization was that inner visions are a projection of one's own mind and not due to the religious leaders that we attribute to them. As Faqir said so pointedly on many occasions, “Now, you see no Jesus Christ comes from without in anybody's visions. No Rama, no Krishna, no Buddha, and no Baba Faqir comes from without to anybody. The visions are only because of the impressions and suggestions that a disciple has already accepted in his mind. These impressions and suggestions appear to him like a dream. No body comes from without. This is the plain truth.”  I have had the privilege of knowing Baba Faqir Chand personally and have read almost everything available by him in English. He has provided us with an amazing cornucopia of wisdom on such subjects as karma, meditation, and ethical living. Yet, I must confess, that I find the satsangs that he gave to Harjit Singh Sandhu and Simret Kaur Sandhu in London, England, in 1980, to be unique. They are extraordinarily powerful in their import and reveal in a nutshell the very essence of Faqir Chand's radical thinking.  I have read through these satsangs several times and in each instance I discover something new in them. Faqir's satsangs are akin to a multifaceted jewel, shining forth with crystalline illuminations.

Summary

Durga is a very special goddess. When I first encountered her, I was a little hesitant, but I knew deep down I needed to work with her. From 2014-2015, she has guided me. Ever so often, I am guided to work with one specific deity for a prolong period of time. It was Durga's turn then. She is by far one of the most beloved of the Hindu Goddesses. She is fiercely loyal and will pull out all the stops when she is protecting her own. She is, in many ways, a gentler version of Kali, but not quite as gentle as Parvati or Lakshmi. Durga's name means "impassable and invincible." The name is derived from the Sanskrit word for fortress, Durg. She has several forms. In this book , we will deal with her nine forms, also known as Navadurga or literally 'Nine Forms of Goddess Durga.' Each one has a purpose and we will perform nine rituals, one for each form.

Summary

Inner Visions and Running Trains

Summary

Surprisingly, one of the more lucid insights on the philosophy of the Tibetan Book of the Dead comes from a Hindu mystic, named Baba Faqir Chand, who apparently was not familiar with the original Tibetan text or its English translation. Although Faqir was not conversant with the Bardo Thotrol, he was nevertheless steeped in its philosophy as taught to him by his guru, Shiv Brat Lal of Gopiganj. Faqir Chand, like his lama counterparts, spent much of his life in meditation, attempting to consciously go through the dying process in order to prepare himself for his final exit. However, unlike others of his kind, Faqir left a detailed account of his some 70-plus years of meditation (ranging from three to 12 hours daily) which led up to his enlightenment. The result is a richly detailed account which provides a thorough understanding of how inner visions and the like are projected in the intermediate stages between life and death.

These quirks turn us into valiant warriors in the face of the most challenging situations. Each one of us falls into three categories in this game: Positive contributor. Demons headed by Maricha and Subahu try to cast spells of intense negativity.  Protective meditator. Rama and Lakshmana work hard to protect the positive from corrupting influences. So which role do you want to play in this game?  Roar with Courage is the first book in Ramayana: The Game of Life series. Tara Mantra Magick

Summary

For most, the goddess Tara the Goddess of compassion and protection. Few people know that she has several other natures as well; 21 in all. She, like most deities in the eastern religions, whether it be Hinduism or certain forms of Buddhism , have several different natures. As I stated in the book on Kali in this series, I mentioned that many deities have qualities that we, in the west, may consider to be "evil" but in the east, they are considered "wrathful". Tara and her energies are very well suited for use in Magick. More often than not, her energy is loving and embracing. But as I said, she has a wrathful nature that can very much be equated to the Hindu Goddess Durga and perhaps even Kali of the Hindu traditions. This wrathful nature can be harnessed. With that said, let's take a journey through the energies of Tara.

The Bhagavad Gita (Lives of Great Religious Books)

Summary

The Bhagavad Gita, perhaps the most famous of all Indian scriptures, is universally regarded as one of the world's spiritual and literary masterpieces. Richard Davis tells the story of this venerable and enduring book, from its origins in ancient India to its reception today as a spiritual classic that has been translated into more than 75 languages. The Gita opens on the eve of a mighty battle, when the warrior Arjuna is overwhelmed by despair and refuses to fight. He turns to his charioteer, Krishna, who counsels him on why he must. In the dialogue that follows, Arjuna comes to realize that the true battle is for his own soul. Davis highlights the place of this legendary dialogue in classical Indian culture, and then examines how it has lived on in diverse settings and contexts. He looks at the medieval devotional traditions surrounding the divine character of Krishna and traces how the Gita traveled from India to the West, where it found admirers in such figures as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and Aldous Huxley. Davis explores how Indian nationalists like Mahatma Gandhi and Swami Vivekananda used the Gita in their fight against colonial rule, and how contemporary interpreters reanimate and perform this classical work for audiences today. An essential biography of a timeless masterpiece, this audiobook is an ideal introduction to the Gita and its insights into the struggle for self-mastery that we all must wage.

Summary

This audiobook contains an easily accessible overview of the Hindu religion, with a focus on those coming from the Western religions and cultures. While quite a few of us in the west are familiar with at least some aspects of the religion (karma, for instance), most of us lack any real depth of understanding of the complexities and nuances of one of the world's oldest and most diverse religions. I hope that by listening to this book you can at least begin to scratch the surface of this rich and intricate religion. We will cover the basics of the belief system, including the concepts of karma, reincarnation, ahimsa, and the one Supreme Being. These concepts unite all the various sects of the Hindu religion, as well as all of the regional and familial variations in what is a rich and complex religion. The pantheon of the gods is described, with an emphasis on each god's function. The rich symbolism present in their depictions is also explored, for a small sampling of the main deities. A full treatment of the symbolism is a subject worthy of a full semester college course. Not only is Hinduism rich in its diversity of gods and goddesses, it is also filled with many different rituals and festivals. Some of the most important rituals that punctuate the life of a Hindu are described. Rituals that are performed for pregnancy, birth, and death are common. Like we are accustomed to in the west, the Hindu religion also celebrates many holidays. I describe some of the most popular. Finally, I give a brief overview of what can only be considered one of the largest collections of religious scriptures in the world. They number over 100, though not all are accorded the same significance. This work is intended to serve as a jumping off point for you to begin your self-exploration of the world's oldest and third largest religion. Listen to the audiobook today to learn more about this fascinating religion.

Ramayana Banaam Mahabharata [Ramayana vs. Mahabharata]

Summary

It is a popular belief that the Ramayana is idealistic while the Mahabharata is realistic. Yet these two epics have identical building blocks, identical themes and identical history.  In this groundbreaking book, Devdutt Pattanaik, India’s most popular mythologist, explores the similarities and dissimilarities between the two epics in a ‘playful analysis’. Whether it is the family structure, forest exile or war, the comparison between the two epics proves a startling point - the Mahabharata is in fact a reaction to the events in the Ramayana. Ideas in this book are distributed over 56 chapters. In temple ritual, Vishnu is offered 8 different meals daily, different on all seven days of the week - 56 dishes in all. May each chapter serve as a mouthwatering offering to the Vishnu within you. Please note: This audiobook is in Hindi.

Rearming Hinduism

Summary

Rearming Hinduism is a handbook for intellectual resistance. Through an astute and devastating critique of Hinduphobia in today's academia, media and popular culture, Vamsee Juluri shows us that what the Hinduphobic worldview denies virulently is not only the truth and elegance of Hindu thought, but the very integrity and sanctity of the natural world itself. By boldly challenging some of the media age's most popular beliefs about nature, history, and pre-history along with the Hinduphobes' usual myths about Aryans, invasions and blood-sacrifices, Rearming Hinduism links Hinduphobia and its hubris to a predatory and self-destructive culture that perhaps only a renewed Hindu sensibility can effectively oppose. It is a call to see the present in a way that elevates our desa and kala to the ideals of the sanathana dharma once again. "For a civilization is not just buildings and machines, but its people, their thought, and their culture. It is a way of knowing the world, a way of giving meaning and value to the contents of life. It is a resource, most of all, for living intelligently."

Summary

Authentic narration of the epic with life lessons Keeping Faith and Conquering Fear The Ramayana is not a story. It is a way of life. It is the game of life. Life is a constant reminder that nothing, however powerful in one season, remains so in the next. These endless cycles of change could really spook someone who is unprepared to face the realities. Remember that situations of helplessness are always created by one’s own limited imagination. Perception appears larger than reality. Many were afraid to battle the Lankans, but grounded in reality, Rama and his army managed to free Sita. Fear results in pain. Lying broken and bruised, Sampati did not believe he could help until he did and it made all the difference. Clarity leads to freedom. Rama never wavered in his singleminded pursuit, and eventually got exactly what he wanted. Do you have the courage to face your fears? Stand Strong is the fourth book in Ramayana: The Game of Life series. A modern retelling of the Kishkindha Kanda of Valmiki’s epic, it reminds us through the tragic story of brothers Vali and Sugriva that life is like a dangerous treasure hunt. One must be resilient while running through confusing, zigzagging paths to acquire essential wisdom.  Shubha Vilas is a spiritual seeker and a motivational speaker. He helps people in dealing with modern-day life situations through the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, Ramayana and other dharmic traditions. Krishna: The History and Legacy of the Popular Hindu Deity

Summary

In the West, Hinduism is a religion that everyone has heard of but one that few non-practitioners truly understand. Today it is widely regarded as one of the world’s great religions and considered the indigenous religion of India, with practices and beliefs stretching back thousands of years. Hinduism as a religion spans more than 3,000 years, and now it includes nearly one billion people. At the same time, it is not a specific term, since there are clear sectarian boundaries, the same way there are differences between Protestantism and Catholicism, and even differences between the various Protestant sects and the various Catholic sects, Hinduism may be broken down into many major sub-groupings that may or may not have much in common at all. Additionally, in the same way Christianity contains many smaller, spirituality heterodox groups like Gnostic Christianity (which are sometimes called cults), Hinduism also contains many groups that have beliefs that do not fit easily within the common corpus of Hindu belief systems. All of these divisions came well after the time of the Aryans, and Hinduism likely began to divide around the 1st century CE, about 1,000 years after the arrival of the Aryans into the Indian subcontinent. Sri Krishna, believed to be the eighth incarnation of Vishnu, is without question one of the most popular and instantly recognizable deities within the Hindu pantheon, which encompasses hundreds of Puranic divine beings, coupled with approximately 33 Vedic gods and goddesses or “devas,” and a sea of other lower-ranking demigods and legendary figures. The likeness of the blue-skinned, flute-toting god, blessed with an unspeakably beautiful face and midnight-black curls, has been replicated in countless sculptures, often clad in colorful clothes and adorned with gold and silver jewelry, relief carvings, paintings, and other artistic mediums, otherwise known as “murti.” Hindus and subscribers of the Bhagavad Gita, as well as practitioners of bhakti yoga, ashtanga yoga, jñana yoga, and karma yoga are intimately familiar with this god of unconditional love, compassion, and tenderness, who has also been crowned “Yogesvara,” the master of yogis and all things mystical.   While Hinduism has always seemed complicated to outsiders, even those not terribly familiar with the faith and those unpracticed in the art of yoga know of Krishna, or at the very least they have heard his name in the course of conversation. It is particularly difficult, if not impossible to escape the deity's omnipresence in India. In all likelihood, tourists privileged enough to experience the enchanting republic firsthand have visited (or marveled at in passing) one of the innumerable temples dedicated to Krishna peppered throughout India, and this is excluding the shrines erected in his honor in other parts of the world.   Perhaps it was the Radha Parthasarathi in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh that caught their eye: a vibrant temple built in the shape of a chariot and painted entirely in the dainty shade of watermelon-pink, complete with wheels and a quartet of colossal stallions that towered over its visitors. Or perhaps it was the Sri Sri Radha Parthasarathi Mandir in New Delhi that stopped them in their tracks: a stunning and sprawling complex dominated by lace-white pointed oval domes and embellished with wooden, marble, and stone lattice carvings, which houses the 1,764-pound Astounding Bhagavad Gita, the “largest principle sacred text ever to be printed.” The Vrindavan Chandrodaya Mandir, currently under construction, is slated to be the tallest religious monument ever built."

Rai Salig Ram: A Glimpse of His Life and Work

Summary

This book provides an introduction into the fascinating life and work of one of the great Indian mystics of the 19th century, who was a contemporary of Sri Ramakrishna.  It is surprising that Rai Salig Ram, who is such a pivotal figure in the history of Radhasoami, is not better known among satsangis in the Beas related branches of the movement. In contrast, in the Agra connected satsangs - Soami Bagh, Dayal Bagh, and Peepal Mandi - Huzur Maharaj (as Salig Ram is honorifically called) is deeply revered since he is regarded as the chief successor and Gurumukh of Shiv Dayal Singh, the esteemed founder of Radhasoami.  Most of the earliest literature on Radhasoami comes from Salig Ram, who penned a number of books in Hindi on the practice of surat shabd yoga meditation. Salig Ram, who was highly respected by the British authorities, eventually got promoted to be the Postmaster General of the North-Western Provinces, the first Indian to hold such a position. But despite this remarkable achievement, Salig Ram was more interested in spirituality and his guru to whom he was steadfast in his devotion, serving him day and night.  Having visited Dayalbagh, Soami Bagh, and other Radhasoami centers in Agra that owe their existence to Huzur Maharaj, I felt that it was important to make his work better known in the West.  This small volume is designed as an introductory glimpse into the remarkable life and teachings of Rai Salig Ram. To accomplish this aim, I decided it would be best to include excerpts from the earliest known biographies of Huzur Maharaj. These include, Shiv Brat Lal Varman's A Truly Holy Life, Max Müller's brief chapter on Salig Ram in his small book, Ramakrishna: His Life and Sayings, and Partap Singh's biography of Soamiji Maharaj, which presents a highly effusive account of Huzur Maharaj and his one-pointed adoration of his spiritual guru.

Swami Vivekananda and His Legacy with Gwilym Beckerlegge

Summary

In this five part lecture series Gwilym Beckerlegge discusses the life and legacy of Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902), the Hindu teacher who was arguably the first "global guru". Vivekananda has been influential in shaping, among other things, Hindu notions of social activism, and what has come to be known as Modern Yoga, which is now practised beyond India. Gwilym covers the influence of Vivekananda's own guru, the widely revered Sri Ramakrishna, Vivekananda's fascinating journey from India to the United States and Europe at the turn of the 20th century, and the institutions Vivekananda started in Ramakrishna's name. Vivekananda has been a highly influential but contentious figure in the history of recent Hindu tradition. These lectures will explore aspects of Vivekananda’s legacy with particular reference to the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, the movement Vivekananda founded in his guru's name, and the Vivekananda Kendra, also inspired by Vivekananda, which came into existence in 1972. The Kendra, however, promotes in Vivekananda’s name an ideology strongly influenced by Hindu nationalism. Through an examination of these two movements, the lecture will illustrate the diffuse and durable nature of Vivekananda’s influence, and in the process explain why Vivekananda has been judged by some to have been a contradictory and controversial figure. Session 1 - Introducing Vivekananda and his guru Ramakrishna Session 2 - Vivekananda in the USA and London Session 3 - Establishing the Ramakrishna Math and Mission in India: Vivekananda and the spiritual discipline of service Session 4 - Continuity, discontinuity, and innovation in Vivekananda's ideas Session 5 - Vivekananda and his Hindu nationalist admirers
