Come, Sit, Stay

Summary

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. - Matthew 11:28. Perhaps you’re like me. Perhaps you originally came to Jesus and felt great freedom as He eased your load. But maybe, over the course of the journey with Him, your burdens piled up and you lost your joy. It happens so easily: we unconsciously lose our focus on Christ and begin to look to ourselves. We distractedly go through the routines of the “Christian life,” whatever that is, depending on our own strength, discipline, and works. When that happens, the world goes gray. The bright colors and fun vitality of an intimate relationship with Jesus fade to an anxious, resentful, weary, and burdened religious life: the very thing Jesus came to free people from. Yet, embedded within Jesus’ call to “Come to Me” is a progression of verbs that actually lead to the result of rest. Wonderful, real rest for our souls. And if you have a strange brain like me, these verbs happen to sound a lot like dog commands. I’m not suggesting that we’re all retrievers or poodles or border collies . . . but I am saying that there is a certain frisky love, power, and freedom in obedience that is unleashed when we respond to Jesus’ invitation and learn to obey the commands of the Master. Come. Sit. Stay. When we obey these commands, the rich result is rest. This rest can change our lives." - author Ellen Vaughn

My Brother's Voice

Summary

Stephen 'Pista' Nasser was 13 years old when the Nazis whisked him and his family away from their home in Hungary to Auschwitz. Stephen's account of the Holocaust, told in the refreshingly direct and optimistic language of a young boy, will help every listener to understand that the Holocaust was real, and that, if you have enough love, determination, and will power, there is always a better tomorrow!

No Longer Strangers

Summary

Belonging has never come easy to me. Growing up, there was my mutated national identity to deal with-my not-quite-American, not-quite-Indonesian soul, restless in both countries. Later, when I came out as a celibate gay Christian, I found I didn't fit into the church as easily as I used to. I've often wondered what it means to belong to others even when I can't manage to blend in with them. The way Jesus tells it, if we give up on belonging in order to follow him, we'll find ourselves belonging anyway. We might not belong the way other people do, with normal homes and normal families and normal ways of fitting in. But we'll belong in a way that's a hundred times better. We'll be fully in place because we know we are out of place. We'll belong like aliens. Maybe you're caught in the same tension as me, wanting to fit somewhere even as you're permanently out of place. Maybe you feel like an alien. If so, let's be aliens together.

Echoing Hope

Summary

Where is Jesus when we need him most? An influential pastor shares how despair can lead us to discover true hope and a deeper relationship with God, helping us emerge stronger and more joyful from times of crisis. “May this careful look at pain in the context of Jesus’s life open up avenues of discovery and healing.” (Mindy Caliguire, cofounder and president of Soul Care) We all experience difficulties and hardships. But how can we learn to live richly in the midst of them? And even grow spiritually because of them? The answer is found in the hopeful humanity of Jesus.  As the son of God, Jesus wasn’t exempt from suffering, disappointment, or injustice. He lived in the real world as a real person. He wept for those he loved. He felt hunger and thirst. He endured temptation, betrayal, and ridicule. He died after being unjustly tortured. And somehow through it all, he embodied hope - by defeating death and opening a new world of life for us. In Echoing Hope, influential pastor and blogger Kurt Willems reveals how understanding the humanity of Jesus can radically transform our identity and empower us to step into our pain-filled world in a new way. Combining rich theological insight with personal stories and practices for response, he shows how we can overcome despair and encounter the beautiful potential of our lives.

Take Your Life Back: 2 Books in 1

Summary

While meditation is the most important tenet of Buddhism, it is not the only one. Even more significantly, it is not a stand-alone idea. In Buddhism, meditation is the means to an end. Buddhist practitioners use meditation to build their spiritual well-being and achieve enlightenment or nirvana. This is the Buddhist or Eastern concept of meditation. Other than uplifting the spirit, meditation is used for little in the way of attaining personal goals and success in life. But when it comes to the modern or Western concept of meditation, the focus lies on the power of meditation to boost our minds and empower us to attain prosperity in every area of our life. Most people practice this form of meditation. In various forms, it empowers the mind and the body. However, because it is not used to adopt sweeping changes in mindsets or worldview, it does not empower the spirit that much. You see, many people do meditation instead of practicing it. They look at it as a means to an end. And I am not saying that it is not or that they are wrong to do this. All I am saying is that this view limits you. It prevents you from realizing all the benefits of meditation. A deeper appreciation for meditation, one that recognizes the value of its philosophical roots, will help you to get in the right frame of mind and spirit as you pursue your dreams. It is only by reaching this level of appreciation that you can reap all the benefits that meditation affords you. Even without having to live in a monastery, sell all your personal belongings, and give everything to the poor, you can improve your spirit (and thus your entire life) by adopting some of the principles espoused by Buddhist gurus in the 8,000-year history of meditation. This is the greatness of meditation; you can practice it regardless of your religious or philosophical beliefs because it focuses on creating a link between the three elements of your being. It allows you to become the best version of yourself that you can possibly reach. I guess that is why it has been adopted by self-help practitioners so readily: because it works. It allows you to realize your true self and further empowers you to reach it.

Pensa come un monaco
