Through My Father's Eyes

Summary

USA Today best seller list. Many have written about Billy Graham, the evangelist. This is the first book about Billy Graham, the father, written from the perspective of a son who knew him best.  As a beloved evangelist and a respected man of God, Billy Graham’s stated purpose in life never wavered: to help people find a personal relationship with God through a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. This was a calling that only increased over time, and Billy embraced it fully throughout his active ministry and beyond. Yet Billy pursued his life’s work, as many men do, amid a similarly significant calling to be a loving husband and father.  While most people knew Billy Graham as America’s pastor, Franklin Graham knew him in a different way, as a dad. And while present and future generations will come to their own conclusions about Billy Graham and the legacy that his commitment to Christ has left behind, no one can speak more insightfully or authoritatively on that subject than a son who grew up in the shadow of his father’s life and the examples of his father’s love. This vulnerable audiobook is a look at both Billy Graham the evangelist and Billy Graham the father, and the impact he had on a son who walked in his father’s steps while also becoming his own man, leading ministries around the world, all of it based on the foundational lessons his father taught him.  “My father left behind a testimony to God,” says Franklin, “a legacy not buried in a grave but still pointing people to a heaven-bound destiny. The Lord will say to my father, and to all who served Him obediently, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant’ [Matthew 25:21].”

Answering the Call

Summary

Revere life, and give yours away for the sake of serving others. As a young man, Albert Schweitzer seemed destined for greatness. His immense talent and fortitude propelled him to a place as one of Europe's most renowned philosophers, theologians, and musicians in the early 20th century. Yet Schweitzer shocked his contemporaries by forsaking worldly success and embarking on an epic journey into the wilds of French Equatorial Africa, vowing to serve as a lifelong physician to "the least of these" in a mysterious land rife with famine, sickness, and superstition. Enduring hardship, conflict, and personal struggles, he and his beloved wife, Hélène, became French prisoners of war during WWI, and Hélène later battled persistent illnesses. Ken Gire's pause-resisting, novelesque narrative sheds new light on Schweitzer's faith-in-action ethic and his commitment to honor God by celebrating the sacredness of all life. The legacy of this 1952 Nobel Prize honoree endures in the thriving African hospital community that began in a humble chicken coop, in the millions who have drawn inspiration from his example, and in the challenge that emanates from his life story into our day. Albert Schweitzer seemed destined for greatness - and he achieved it by making his life his greatest sermon to a world in desperate need of hope and healing.

Staring at Lakes

Summary

Throughout his life, Michael Harding has lived with a sense of emptiness - through faith, marriage, fatherhood and his career as a writer, a pervading sense of darkness and unease remained. When he was 58, he became physically ill and found himself in the grip of a deep melancholy. Here, in this beautifully written memoir, he talks with openness and honesty about his journey: leaving the priesthood when he was in his 30s, settling in Leitrim with his artist wife, the depression that eventually overwhelmed him and how, ultimately, he found a way out of the dark by accepting the fragility of love and the importance of now. Staring at Lakes was a number-one best seller in Michael's native Ireland and won three BGE Irish book awards in 2013, including Non-Fiction Book of the Year.

Martin Luther

Summary

Martin Luther is famous for the moment he nailed his 95 Theses to the church door in Wittenberg, yet the scope of his influence on the modern world is hardly limited to that one act. He emerged as a leader of the Reformation, coming onto the European scene at a time when modes of thought were changing, adapting from the medieval norm of reliance on authoritative sources such as Aristotle to modern ideas of discovering knowledge through textual interpretation, experience, and experimentation. Inside you will hear about.... From law student to monk  The angry monk  95 Theses  Debater, reformer, and heretic  Knight George  Defining the Lutheran Church  And much more!   As his life followed a tumultuous path from student to monk to reformer and church leader, his emphasis on salvation by faith and the authority of the Bible alone - not priests or the Pope - had lasting impact on the history of the church. While Martin Luther may remain a controversial figure, his life and writings undoubtedly played an important role in the religious, intellectual, and political development of the Western world.

Louis D. Brandeis

Summary

A riveting new examination of the leading progressive Supreme Court justice of his era. According to Jeffrey Rosen, Louis D. Brandeis was "the Jewish Jefferson", the greatest critic of what he called "the curse of bigness" in business and government since the author of the Declaration of Independence. Published to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his Supreme Court confirmation on June 1, 1916, Louis D. Brandeis: American Prophet argues that Brandeis was the most farseeing constitutional philosopher of the 20th century. In addition to writing the most famous article on the right to privacy, he also wrote the most important Supreme Court opinions about free speech, freedom from government surveillance, and freedom of thought and opinion. And as the leader of the American Zionist movement, he convinced Woodrow Wilson and the British government to recognize a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Combining narrative biography with a passionate argument for why Brandeis matters today, Rosen explores what Brandeis, the Jeffersonian prophet, can teach us about historic and contemporary questions involving the Constitution, monopoly, corporate and federal power, technology, privacy, free speech, and Zionism.

Thomas Aquinas: A Life from Beginning to End

Summary

Thomas Aquinas is known as a great theologian, and his treatises and theories are studied by clergy all over the world. He is celebrated for his words of wisdom as well as the alleged miracles that he performed while he was still alive. Yet as large as his acclaim may be, Aquinas has also had his fair share of detractors both during his lifetime and long thereafter.  In the 20th century, for example, esteemed British philosopher and writer Bertrand Russel went so far in his criticism as to say that he believed that Thomas Aquinas was not a philosopher in the classical sense of the word but rather that he relied more on dogmatic Catholic faith than any sense of inquiry or inductive reasoning. There are of course those that would vehemently argue the opinions of Bertrand Russel. While it is not the purpose of this book to take one side or the other, these arguments and criticisms will be examined as we delve into the history of this great thinker.  Casting all accolades and critiques aside, in this book, you will find the raw, bare bones of the man who Thomas Aquinas came to be. Thomas Aquinas had an exceptional life of both major accomplishments and upsetting setbacks - here, we explore them in full.   Discover a plethora of topics such as: Born into a noble family Joining the Dominican Friars Kidnapped and Imprisoned Journey to Cologne The execution of his brother Late life and death And much more... The Opening Window

Summary

A few years ago, people began encouraging me to write the story of my spiritual journey from New Age back to Christianity. This is it. It has been a lot of fun to write. As I remembered and wrote down each step through my life, I began to see a wonderful pattern as a powerful and awesome God was at work in my life. I pray that my circular journey is interesting and helpful as I take you from my Christian roots as a child to the outer fringes during my teen and young adult years, until finally, I return, prodigal child, back into my Father’s arms. I’ve always had a strong love for God. He knows that and has never left me, even as I took, not always of my own accord, the wildest detours. Some may not feel my tone is harsh enough toward the false teachings I received. This book is not so much a criticism of New Age as it is the story of our wise and marvelous God, in process, working with and through one of his children. It is the story of our God, who keeps his mind upon one of his own. It is the story of a nurturing and loving and merciful God, who, despite detours we all take in this short life, holds his dear little ones close to his heart, loving them always, forgetting them never. I thank God that no matter where we are (on our journey), he is there, only a heartbeat away, no farther than a prayer, the Creator, craving to reside, in His created. As I told my story, I found often that my soul stirred with a message from God. Sprinkled liberally throughout this book, then, are poetic interjections as my enthusiasm for life and God and all his children flowed onto the narration. This is not just my spiritual autobiography. This is an opening window, and I pray you will not be able to contain the riches God pours out to you through it.

The Wild-Bird Child: A Life of Amy Carmichael

Summary

She has become a legend. Brilliant, personable, and passionate, she is arguably the most gifted of all Irish woman writers of Christian literature. During the time of the Raj in India, Amy Carmichael discovered a custom of the time in which children were "married to gods" and so introduced to a life of prostitution. With a mixture of courage and heartbreak, she began to uncover the facts, sometimes under disguise, for the government. After independence, the Indian government courageously prohibited the practice by law. Against difficult circumstances, Amy and her colleagues provided a safe home for these children against awesomely difficult circumstances at Dohnavur in South India. Until her death in 1951, she devoted 50 years of her life to rescuing babies and children from dangerous backgrounds in India. Amy, a Christian missionary, social reformer, and writer of 35 books, once described herself as a "Wild-bird child and in no wise tame": Her life proved her observation to be hauntingly accurate. Millions of people have been influenced by her life and writing. For this biography, the first by anyone from her home County, Derick Bingham carefully researched Amy Carmichael’s original letters now placed by the Dohnavur Fellowship and Miss Margaret Wilkinson in the Northern Ireland Public Records Office. As Bingham tried to uncover the heart and conscience of this extraordinarily self-effacing legend, he is on record as saying that it proved to be one of the greatest spiritual experiences of his life, and in this biography, listeners will find spiritual gold.

God and Ronald Reagan

Summary

Ronald Reagan is hailed today for a presidency that restored optimism to America, engendered years of economic prosperity, and helped bring about the fall of the Soviet Union. Yet until now little attention has been paid to the role Reagan's personal spirituality played in his political career, shaping his ideas, bolstering his resolve, and ultimately compelling him to confront the brutal - and, not coincidentally, atheistic - Soviet empire. In this groundbreaking book, political historian Paul Kengor draws upon Reagan's legacy of speeches and correspondence, and the memories of those who knew him well, to reveal a man whose Christian faith remained deep and consistent throughout his more than six decades in public life. Raised in the Disciples of Christ Church by a devout mother with a passionate missionary streak, Reagan embraced the church after reading a Christian novel at the age of 11. A devoted Sunday-school teacher, he absorbed the church's model of "practical Christianity" and strived to achieve it in every stage of his life.
