Cabeza de Vaca was part of a 1527 Spanish expedition to explore the region north of the Gulf of Mexico. His group lost contact with their ships, and traveled on foot across Florida, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and northern Mexico for the next eight years. This work, written in 1542 as an official report to the king of Spain, is a rich source of information on the ancient Southwest: the indigenous people, the climate, and the flora and fauna. Cabeza de Vaca’s group were the first Europeans to see animals like the opossum and the buffalo, and the book contains the earliest account of a Caribbean Hurricane.

George Müller (1805-1898) was a Christian evangelist and director of the Ashley Down orphanage in Bristol, England. The Life of Trust contains his diary up to 1860, supplemented by autobiographical notes at the start and throughout the text. Mueller founded a number of orphanages in England in the 19th century whilst refusing to personally benefit in any way, fully trusting that God would provide in his financial needs. Throughout his life, he relied on God’s goodness in order to feed, clothe, and house thousands of English children under his care. It is an uplifting narrative of abiding faith.

The Kingdom of God Is Within You by Leo Tolstoy is a philosophical treatise first published in Germany in 1894 after being banned in his home country of Russia. The work is the culmination of 30 years of Tolstoy's thinking, and sets out rules for a new organization of society, based on an interpretation of Christianity which focuses on universal love. In a bold and original way, Tolstoy shows his audiences why violence of any type - even that sanctioned by the state or the church - must be rejected. A high degree of the book’s appeal lies in its emphasis on fair treatment of the poor and the working class. Its concept of Christianity is that of a workable philosophy originating from the words of a remarkable teacher, and it has inspired many religious and secular leaders, including Gandhi.

Thomas Troward was a judge in British-administered India who wrote and lectured widely on the power of the mind, and became president of the International New Thought Alliance. The Hidden Power comprises a collection of Troward's essays on consciousness, symbolism, psychology, and mental science. The book offers in-depth explanations about various aspects of thought, spiritual resonance and the laws of attraction, including the shadowy realm of curses and the protective measures to be taken against it. Troward examines various arcane traditions and lucidly explains certain esoteric passages of the Bible. He argues that the ability to discern truth results from the ability to translate symbols, and that the root of all mankind’s errors derives from people’s inability to do this. Some essay titles are “The I Am", "Affirmative Power", "Religious Opinions", "The Bible and the New Thought", "Jachin and Boaz", and "What is Higher Thought”.

Augustine of Hippo (354 - 430 AD) was an early Christian theologian and philosopher from North Africa whose writings influenced all of Western Christianity. Augustine's Confessions is one of the most influential works of Latin literature. Written in the last years of the fourth century AD during his early years as a bishop, the work reflects on his life and on the acts of remembering and recounting a life. Part life story and part spiritual biography, the work examines the seminal issues of the human condition: Who we are, and why we are here? Augustine saw the human being as a composite of soul and body, with the soul being superior to the body. This is based on his hierarchical classification of things into those that just exist, those that exist and live, and those that exist, live, and have reason. This is also an account of how Augustine exchanged the worldly things in pursuit of divine knowledge and awareness.
