Summary

A tempestuous acquaintance and disastrous marriage proposal makes it unlikely Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet will ever reconcile. Despairing of their own reunion, they attend with great energy to salvaging that of Darcy’s friend Mr. Bingley and Elizabeth’s sister Jane. People are rarely so easily maneuvered in and out of love, however, they follow a series of misunderstandings, both willful and unwitting, that complicates all four star-crossed lovers’ alliances more than ever before. A witty and romantic novel that delights in the folly of human nature and also honors Austen’s original Pride and Prejudice and holds appeal for listeners of all genres.

Summary

Opinions of authorities differ widely concerning the origin of playing cards, the purpose for which they were intended, and the time of their introduction into Europe. In his Researches into the History of Playing Cards, Samuel Weller Singer advances the opinion that cards reached Southern Europe from India by way of Arabia. It is probable that the Tarot cards were part of the magical and philosophical lore secured by the Knights Templars from the Saracens or one of the mystical sects then flourishing in Syria. Returning to Europe, the Templars, to avoid persecution, concealed the arcane meaning of the symbols by introducing the leaves of their magical book ostensibly as a device for amusement and gambling. This audiobook gives listeners a detailed history of the mysterious origins of tarot cards.

Science of Breath

Summary

The Hindu yogis have always paid great attention to the science of breath, for reasons that will be apparent to the student who listens to this audiobook. Many Western writers have touched upon this phase of the yogi teachings, but we believe it has been reserved for the author of this work to give the Western student, in concise form and simple language, the underlying principles of the yogi science of breath, together with many of the favorite yogi breathing exercises and methods. We have given the Western idea as well as the Oriental, showing how one dovetails into the other. We have used the ordinary English terms, almost entirely, avoiding the Sanscrit terms, which are confusing to the average Western person.   The first part of the audiobook is devoted to the physical phase of the science of breath; then the psychic and mental sides are considered, and finally, the spiritual side is touched upon.   We may be pardoned if we express ourselves as pleased with our success in condensing so much yogi lore into such little space and by the use of words and terms that may be understood by anyone. Our only fear is that its very simplicity may cause some to pass it by as unworthy of attention, while they pass on their way searching for something "deep", mysterious, and not understandable. However, the Western mind is eminently practical, and we know it is only a matter of a short time before it will recognize the practicability of this work.   We greet our students with our most profound saalam and bid them be seated for their first lesson in the yogi science of breath.

Dreams of Light

Summary

A world-renowned expert in lucid dreaming and Tibetan dream yoga guides us into the tradition’s daytime practices, a complement to the nighttime practices taught in his previous offering Dream Yoga. Most of us are absolutely certain that we’re awake here and now - it’s a given, right? Yet, according to Tibet’s dream yoga tradition, ordinary waking life is no more real than the illusions of our nightly dreams.  In his previous offering Dream Yoga, Andrew Holecek guided us into Tibetan Buddhism’s nocturnal path of lucid dreaming and other dimensions of sleeping consciousness. Now, with Dreams of Light, he offers us an in-depth, step-by-step guide to its daytime practices.  Known as the “illusory form” practices, these teachings include insights, meditations, and actions to help us realize the dreamlike nature of our lives. Through an immersive exploration of the tradition, beginners and seasoned practitioners alike will learn everything they need to deeply transform both their sleeping and waking hours.  “If you’ve struggled to awaken in your dreams”, teaches Holecek, “these techniques will often spark spontaneous lucidity during sleep. And if you’re already a successful lucid dreamer, they will open you to new depths of experience throughout your day.”  For those wishing to explore Tibetan Buddhism’s profound path for awakening to the true nature of reality - day or night - Dreams of Light shows us the way.

Martin Van Buren: A Life from Beginning to End

Summary

Martin Van Buren, the eighth president of the United States, was the first president who was born an American and not a British citizen, a change in demographic which reflects his modern influence upon the office he held. His rise to political power began in the humble setting of Kinderhook, New York, where he was born to Dutch parents who ran a tavern frequented by the Empire State’s political elite, including Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. Inside you will hear about.... An American is born The little magician Van Buren enters the national stage President Jackson’s right-hand man Van Buren’s turn In and out of the White House The legacy of the little magician And much more! From his earliest involvement in government, Van Buren was committed to the nurturing of political parties as a way to deliver the most effective leadership to the American people. He was a loyal supporter of President Andrew Jackson, but when Van Buren took office, he inherited the financial crisis that Jackson’s policies had helped to create. The Panic of 1837 brought the economic prosperity of the country to a screeching halt, and ultimately, Van Buren, who was not re-elected for a second term, paid the price. Whatever his failings as a president, he was a pre-eminent politician, and when the story of America is told, Van Buren’s contribution to the political process must be highly ranked.

Martin Luther

Summary

Martin Luther is famous for the moment he nailed his 95 Theses to the church door in Wittenberg, yet the scope of his influence on the modern world is hardly limited to that one act. He emerged as a leader of the Reformation, coming onto the European scene at a time when modes of thought were changing, adapting from the medieval norm of reliance on authoritative sources such as Aristotle to modern ideas of discovering knowledge through textual interpretation, experience, and experimentation. Inside you will hear about.... From law student to monk  The angry monk  95 Theses  Debater, reformer, and heretic  Knight George  Defining the Lutheran Church  And much more!   As his life followed a tumultuous path from student to monk to reformer and church leader, his emphasis on salvation by faith and the authority of the Bible alone - not priests or the Pope - had lasting impact on the history of the church. While Martin Luther may remain a controversial figure, his life and writings undoubtedly played an important role in the religious, intellectual, and political development of the Western world.
