Summary

You know these characters: The ranger, the fighter, the wizard, the rogue. But haven't you ever wondered how they learned to be those things? Three months into his studies at the Black River Academy of Swordcraft and Spellcraft, Durren Flintrand is shocked by the news that from now on he'll be assigned to a party and that his only hope of progressing beyond the lowly rank of level one is to succeed with his new companions. However, Durren has a secret that may make that impossible, and his three partners have problems of their own. Wizard Areinelimus is terrified of her own magic. Rogue Tia has no patience at all with others. And warrior Hule is just an idiot. In fact, when a disembodied, floating eyeball is your most competent party member, you know you have serious problems. To stand a chance of succeeding, they need to work together, and that means learning to tolerate each other while surviving a world of angry rat people, murderous sorcerers, and homicidal unicorns. But even if they can somehow find a way to get along, dark and ancient forces are stirring, ones no level-one students should ever have to confront.... The Black River Chronicles is a new fantasy series from David Tallerman and Michael Wills. Set in an academy for young adventurers in training, the Black River Academy, our new dungeon crawlers set out to learn the ropes. Follow them in their adventures and misadventures and see if they save the day - or flunk out of school before earning their next level.

Walking Point

Summary

In this intimate memoir, Perry A. Ulander chronicles with powerful clarity the bewildering predicament he confronted and the fellowship and guidance that transformed him during the year he served as an American GI in the jungles of Vietnam. Conveying with unadorned precision the harrowing experiences that shattered his core beliefs, Ulander also captures the camaraderie and humor of his platoon, the hostility between "lifers" and draftees, the physical hardships of reconnaissance missions, and the unrelenting apprehension underlying everyday life. Ultimately he describes the surrendering of social norms and accepted identities that allowed him to glimpse a previously unimagined realm of heightened awareness. Written after a lifetime of reflection on the nature of war and the effects of violence and domination on the minds and spirits of those forced to practice them, Walking Point offers a powerful narrative for listeners with an interest in the effects of war and violence, American involvement in Vietnam, PTSD, and how trauma can be a catalyst for spiritual transformation. Giving voice to profound insights gained through extreme adversity, Ulander movingly captures the depth of trust and commitment among a group of unwitting warriors who struggled to stay alive and sane in unchartered territory. Contents: Chapter 1: Into the Unknown Chapter 2: The Magic Poncho Liner Chapter 3: Initiation Chapter 4: Head On Chapter 5: The Valley of the Shadow Chapter 6: Into the Light Chapter 7: Short Time Chapter 8: No Time Chapter 9: Home

Summary

What would you do if you were playing in a pick-up Celtic band at an Irish pub in downtown Chicago and a biker man yanks you outside, bites you, says "Welcome to the family", and then disappears into the Chicago River? If you are Conor Archer, you would be in pain, wondering what just happened, and then remembering that your mom is dying and you need to get home fast. He arrives in enough time to hold his dying mother. But she has time to tell him that he must go to Tinker's Grove, the hometown he has never seen. It is an old Irish immigrant town from the 19th century, by the banks of the Wisconsin River. Going there is the only way he can be healed. He collapses when he arrives in the center of the town, seriously ill. He wakes up to Troubles, a chocolate Labrador, licking his face and a bunch of people standing around him who soon will be his friends. They want to take him down by the river where there is a Native American burial mound. They say he can be healed there. And that's when Conor realizes he is in a strange town with many mysteries and some really strange people. Tinker's Grove holds secrets. There are the "dark ones", some of the children of the town, who have the powers of the wild animals of the forest. People talk of the river demon Piasa, a water wraith corrupting everything it touches. And they speak of someone or something that dwells in the Indian burial mound. He or it is mysterious and powerful, an immigrant like them from the Celtic lands beyond the sea, but the town knows that presence to be good, holding off that creeping evil. The people seem to think that Conor Archer is some savior in a coming battle between good and evil.
