The Codependency Trap

Summary

Searching for a simple life, Florence decided to take the route of least resistance. Sheltered within the institution of marriage, it was a place to hide from the world. However, the outside world has a way of creeping in.  The Codependency Trap takes us on a journey of self-discovery through one woman’s life. Growing up in a dysfunctional family, Florence had always felt tolerated, rather than unconditionally loved, as a child and she spent her adult years seeking acceptance. A series of relationships were almost convenient rather than for all the right reasons. This would lead her eventually to the realization that she was co-dependent and always needed others’ approval for her own happiness.  The road to recovery wasn’t always easy. Sometimes her desire for love and acceptance caused her to weaken her personal boundaries. Florence learned about self-love and acceptance. Sometimes, she strayed, but she now knew, that she was enough. For anyone who has ever wanted to understand codependency, this is a great book. Rather than reading something clinical on the subject, the reader “lives” the codependent's life through the book. The narrative unfolds naturally and flows well. The message about the care of self-becomes very clear as the story progresses. The book deals with issues of codependency and changing societal gender roles during the 60s and 70s.

Snow in August (A Sam Smith Mystery)

Summary

As a teenager, Ros McCarthy offered Mark, her baby son, up for adoption. Now, as an adult and a successful author, she wanted to reconnect. With Faye at my side, our task was to locate Mark.  Along the way we learned about Ty Gwyn, a children’s home, and the people who lived and worked there. However, as we probed, some people became nervous and issued threats.  Then, unexpectedly, a murder. Was the murder and our investigation into Mark’s whereabouts connected, or merely coincidence? I suspected the former, then had my doubts as the maze became more complex.  Snow in August, the story of a village and its secrets, a tale of longing and regret, and the realization on my part that you should always cherish the people you love.

Entangled

Summary

Have you ever been swept off your feet by a charming, handsome man, only to find his declarations of love were false? If so, you will be interested to learn that maybe, you were entangled with a sociopath.  Some people hear the word sociopath and conjure up the image of a psychopathic killer, but while all psychopaths have sociopathic characteristics, sociopaths do not kill the body. They are killers of souls. Driven by narcissism, they lack a sense of moral responsibility and have no conscience. The definition doesn’t come close to what lurks beneath the surface.  I know because I was entangled with one. It started with “love-bombing”. Daniel came on strong. He seduced me with texts and phone calls, drawing me into his web until I couldn’t think straight. Once he had me where he wanted me, he played on my sentiments to throw me off balance and put my world on the crazy train.  Disguised by his upbeat and funny demeanor, his abuse was subtle and hard to pinpoint. I walked around in a fog and functioned, mindlessly accepting his behaviors for fear of causing a rift. Under constant stress and anxiety over losing him, I give Daniel the benefit of the doubt. Doubt! Remember that word. It will drive me to the edge of insanity by the time the relationship is done.  Not everyone will understand how he could manipulate and deceive me for so long. They don’t know. Daniel was clever and a master of manipulation, able to twist the truth until I accepted his fabricated reality. I didn’t recognize his cunning, devious nature. It’s still hard to believe that the person I loved never really existed. He was a ghost, a man without a soul.

We all experience love and romance in life and sometimes hurt. But for some, it can be a more sinister experience of manipulation and physical abuse. This is a story of a young woman who did unfortunately experience this, blaming herself and feeling worthless until she was too frightened to speak out. This story depicts such a marriage and how she found the strength to fight back and reclaim her life; good versus evil. Just another twist in the rich tapestry we weave as we move through life.
