The American Revolution Reborn

Summary

The American Revolution conjures a series of iconographic images in the contemporary American imagination. In these imagined scenes, defiant Patriots fight against British Redcoats for freedom and democracy, while a unified citizenry rallies behind them and the American cause. But the lived experience of the Revolution was a more complex matter, filled with uncertainty, fear, and discord. In The American Revolution Reborn, editors Patrick Spero and Michael Zuckerman compile essays from a new generation of multidisciplinary scholars that render the American Revolution as a time of intense ambiguity and frightening contingency. In the first section, "Civil Wars", contributors rethink the heroic terms of Revolutionary-era allegiance and refute the idea of patriotic consensus. In the following section, "Wider Horizons", essayists destabilize the historiographical inevitability of America as a nation. The studies gathered in the third section, "New Directions", present new possibilities for scholarship on the American Revolution. And the last section, titled "Legacies", collects essays that deal with the long afterlife of the Revolution and its effects on immigration, geography, and international politics. The book is published by University of Pennsylvania Press. "This is the most ambitious state-of-the-field collection published since the American Revolution's bicentennial. .. lively and wide-ranging collection of essays." - Alan Taylor, author of American Revolutions: A Continental History, 1750-1804 "A state-of-the-field collection. Its essays rank among the best Revolutionary scholarship." - Benjamin H. Irvin, University of Arizona "The essays in this volume are careful, thought-provoking, and highly effective." - Andrew Shankman, Rutgers University-Camden

Why Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles Are the Best Type of Vehicles, Why Natural Gas Vehicles Do Not Warrant the Cost, Why Electric Cars Do Not Warrant the Cost, and Problems with Buying Electric Cars

Summary

This essay sheds light on why plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are the best type of vehicles and elucidates why natural gas vehicles do not warrant the cost. Moreover, why electric cars do not warrant the cost is delineated and the ample problems with buying an electric vehicle are explicated in this essay. Furthermore, the criteria for how to determine if buying a car is worth the investment is demystified and how to earn substantial money online so that you can afford to finance your plug-in hybrid electric vehicle purchase is expounded upon in this essay.  While it may seem far-fetched, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are the utmost best type of vehicles available for sale on the car market in the digital era. Succinctly stated, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are the utmost best type of vehicles since they can operate off electric power or gasoline, unlike other types of vehicles. “The reason that hybrid vehicles are more efficient than conventional gasoline-only vehicles is because they have the ability to ‘reclaim’ energy that was once wasted, for example, the energy used when braking” (“Plug In Hybrid” 2012). Regenerative braking for instance allows plug-in hybrid electric vehicles to partially recharge their battery pack. Regenerative braking can be exhibited en route and helps prolong the vehicle’s driving duration before the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle becomes rendered inoperable. In stark contrast to a typical hybrid vehicle, the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle has the highly pragmatic ability to be recharged “by connecting it to a wall outlet in your home or elsewhere” (“Plug In Hybrid” 2012). More customers are beginning to take heed of the possibility of procuring a plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. It is far more affordable to operate a car off of wattage as opposed to gasoline. Customers can even convert their existing hybrid vehicles into plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. This process involves going to an auto body shop so that vehicular modifications can allow their hybrid vehicle to be able to recharged when connected into “a wall outlet in your home or elsewhere” (“Plug In Hybrid” 2012).

Bitterroot: The Life and Death of Meriwether Lewis

Summary

In America's early national period, Meriwether Lewis was a towering figure. Selected by Thomas Jefferson to lead the expedition to explore the Louisiana Purchase, he was later rewarded by Jefferson with the governorship of the entire Louisiana Territory. Yet within three years, plagued by controversy over administrative expenses, Lewis found his reputation and career in tatters. En route to Washington to clear his name, he died mysteriously in a crude cabin on the Natchez Trace in Tennessee. Was it a suicide, felled by his own alcoholism and mental instability? Most historians have agreed. Patricia Tyson Stroud examines the evidence to posit another, even darker, ending for Lewis.

Stroud uses Lewis's find, the bitterroot flower, with its nauseously pungent root, as a symbol for his reputation as a purported suicide. It was this reputation that Thomas Jefferson promulgated in the memoir he wrote prefacing the short account of Lewis's historic expedition published five years after his death. Without investigation of any kind, Jefferson, Lewis's mentor from boyhood, reiterated undocumented assertions of Lewis's serious depression and alcoholism.

Through a retelling of his life, from his resourceful youth to the brilliance of his leadership and accomplishments as a man, Bitterroot shows that Jefferson's mystifying assertion about the death of his protégé is the long-held bitter root of the Meriwether Lewis story.
