Peter Purves reads this original adventure featuring the First Doctor, Steven and Sara, set in the First World War. 'The Battle of the Somme is the pivotal moment of this conflict.... History hinges on it!' It’s the start of August 1916, and war is raging on the battlefields of France. In the front-line trenches, British soldiers are vanishing without trace. Captain Mark Steadman witnesses one of his comrades being pulled down beneath the mud and realises that something is terribly wrong. When three civilians and a large blue box arrive on the scene, Steadman finds himself helping in their enquiries. The Doctor declares that something has gone wrong with the timeline of the war; the Battle of the Somme should have already begun, yet there is no sign of it. He demands an audience with Field Marshall Haig! A crater in no-man’s land reveals the grisly horror of the missing men’s fate and brings the Doctor and his friends into terrible danger. There are forces at work here which even he can’t fully comprehend. Peter Purves, who played Steven in the BBC TV series, reads this powerful new story by Justin Richards.

For two decades, from the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s, every fan of the Doctor hoped to find The Doctor Who Annual in their Christmas stocking. Larger than life and twice as colourful, the stories within were exuberant - and often charmingly naive - in their take on 'the children's own programme which adults adore'. Here, for the first time on audio, Peter Purves (Steven), Anneke Wills (Polly), Geoffrey Beevers (the Master), Matthew Waterhouse (Adric) and Nicola Bryant (Peri) read a selection of these colourful and energetic tales. In 'The Sons of Grekk', the First Doctor is held prisoner in a brutal, otherworldly society. 'The King of Golden Death' finds that the Second Doctor, Polly and Ben have materialised inside an Ancient Egyptian pyramid. The Third Doctor, Jo and the Brigadier confront a familiar adversary in 'Dark Intruders' whilst in 'Conundrum' the Fourth Doctor, Adric and K9 experience warped physics in the corridors of the TARDIS. In 'The Penalty', a delirious Fifth Doctor finds old friends and adversaries ganging up on him, and the Sixth Doctor and Peri plunge into a dangerous period of British history in 'The Real Hereward'. Also included are two vintage essays on the character of our favourite Time Lord: 'Who Is Doctor Who?' from 1966 and 'The Phoenix in the TARDIS' from 1968. Take a nostalgic journey through time with these vintage Doctor Who tales.

An unabridged reading of this classic novelisation featuring the First Doctor and the Meddling Monk.
When the TARDIS materialises on an apparently deserted Northumbrian beach, Steven disputes the Doctor's claim that they have travelled back to the 11th century. The discovery of a modern wristwatch in a nearby forest merely reinforces his opinion.
But it is 1066, the most important date in English history, and the Doctor's arrival has not gone unnoticed. Observing the appearance of the TARDIS is a mysterious monk, who recognises the time machine for what it is. He also knows that the Doctor poses a serious threat to his master plan - a plan which, if successful, could alter the future of the entire world....

First Doctor William Hartnell and his companions mix with mythical Greek Gods in this exclusive audio recording of a 'lost' television soundtrack, with linking narration by Peter Purves.
The Doctor has adopted many guises in his time, but to be hailed as the great god Zeus is a bit of a shock. Yet this is exactly what happens when the TARDIS lands on the plains of Asia Minor, not far from the city of Troy. Taken to the Greek camp by Achilles, the Doctor is introduced to Agamemnon and Odysseus and forced to admit his less¿than¿godlike status. He is then given just two days to come up with a strategy for defeating the Trojans.
Meanwhile, Steven and Vicki have been taken prisoner by the other side. The Trojans are convinced that Vicki is a spy, and to prove her loyalty she must concoct a plan to defeat the Greeks! Like the Doctor, she has just two days to do it.
Luckily for the Doctor, a certain someone has already devised a scheme for beating the Trojans. Even if the wooden horse was invented for a piece of fiction written in the eighth century, it still works. As the opposing forces come face to face in a climactic battle, there are dangers aplenty for both Steven and Vicki. By the time the TARDIS moves away again, it will have both lost and gained a crew member.
