Opening Shots, book three of Fierce Girls at War. The year is 2126. Unknown to the human colonists and the Colonial Rangers at the New Hope Colony on Tau Ceti 4 the alien Rift are finally ready to strike the first blow in their quest to remove the humans from the planet they'd claimed long ago but had never colonized or exploited themselves. Some of the senior Rangers however harbor some suspicions about the mysterious "fog" that has enshrouded a group of islands off the southeast coast of the Alpha continent for several months. Now the Rift are ready to strike. They had to wait until after winter before their waterborne invasion can begin. Reluctant to endanger their handful of orbit to ground airships they plan to attack the eastern settlements by sea. Commander Rick Cassidy and his deputy Gunnery Sergeant Molly Pickford have made themselves nearly indispensable to the colony since coming to the colony three years earlier after fleeing to the colony to escape the assassins sent to kill them. That threat has passed but going back to Earth won't be so easy. Rick's daughter 14-year-old Ciara is on her way to the colony aboard the starship Asia and his sisters Bridget and Nicole O'Brien, both now Colonial Rangers, are preparing to go there as well. The Regimental Commander General Jamison receives a report from the starship Asia message to informing him about the incident on Asia and learns that Rick Cassidy’s daughter was involved. A group of 50 female students and interns from the New Hope Academy prepare to leave on their internship tour of the colony’s eastern settlements with Veronika Tchachenko in charge of getting them where they need to go. First stop is New St Louis where they will put on concerts for the residents. Some of the girls visit with their parents who live in the various settlements. Cassidy and Pickford will have to travel with the Rangers’ equipment including their weapons and ammo on the transport Cairo.

Sure, creating new worlds and guiding imaginary people on grand adventures was an amazing pastime, but finding myself imprisoned within one of my fantasy realms wasn’t on the agenda... My life went from picture-perfect to a complete disaster in the blink of an eye, but it took several years before I recognized the bitter irony of my downfall. Not that it mattered. With only death to look forward to, I found no amusement in the cruel joke until an unexpected visitor changed everything. In an instant, I was transported to another land, a place I’d thought only existed inside the confines of my mind. Unfortunately, discovering that world was real wasn’t the only revelation. My role in shaping events hadn’t gone unnoticed, and there was a steep price to be paid for those interventions. Stranded in unfamiliar territory and hunted by a being with unlimited power, each day was a struggle for survival. Finding something more important than myself to fight for gave me the motivation to push forward - I just hoped it wouldn’t get everyone I’d come to care for murdered along the way. "I love being a Marine but there are days...We may have a lot of the same problems in 2122 we did a hundred years ago but back then the Gul brothers weren’t paying lots to see my head on a spike! Not that I was born yet but that’s not the point! So I’m a pretty good shot and Rick is even better. Did I ask daddy Gul and his boys to go on a rampage? No, I didn’t! But now we have to leave the planet and go to the New Hope colony where the locals like to eat people!” (Staff Sergeant Susan ‘Molly’ Bennett, USMC) The story of the alien Rift invasion of the New Hope Colony begins on Earth in 2122 when all too familiar problems and events cause a chain reaction that will have repercussions on two worlds. Fleeing for their lives and to protect his family Navy, Lieutenant Paul “Rick” O'Brien and Marine Staff Sergeant Susan Mollison “Molly” Bennett will have to board a starship for the long voyage to Earth's first extrasolar colony under new identities. There they will join the Colonial Rangers, the international military force designed to protect the colonists from the planet’s ferocious predators, not to deter an alien invasion. The female-loving Logistics officer O’Brien and superb marksman and the courageous Marine recon squad leader form an unbreakable bond forged under fire that will serve them well as events unfold around them. The circumstances that send them to the New Hope Colony will also have a profound effect on the other members of the O'Brien/Cassidy family and especially Rick's daughter Ciara as well as on the colony where they find refuge. Fierce Girls introduces the lead characters and covers the events that force O’Brien and Bennett to leave Earth. Then as Lieutenant Commander Rick Cassidy and Gunnery Sergeant Molly Pickford the story will deal with their first months at the New Hope Colony. It also introduces the key members of Rick’s family, their embrace of Molly Bennett, and the repercussions on their own lives. The main male character Rick Cassidy serves as a catalyst who sets family members and friends in motion but he does not fight their battles for them although sometimes he fights with them. For one he is a son, for another a father, for others he is a brother, for another a partner and best friend while for still others he is a colleague, a friend, a lover, and a leader who respects the women in his life as competent, intelligent, capable people he inspires to push forward in the face of danger, politics, sexism and inertia. The Fierce Girls at War series beginning with Fierce Girls is not simply about the bonds between the characters. It is about women who are smart, brave, quick thinking, resilient and who are good leaders. They are steady under fire, they are problem solvers and they are resourceful and creative thinkers. They feel fear when circumstances are frightening but they don't panic. They are not dependent on their male counterparts and more often than not they outshine them. They feel lust and love but are not driven by either (most of the time). Many of them are experienced, competent soldiers while others are young students dropped into a perilous situation from which no one is coming to rescue them. Some of them are bound by bonds of family but by no means are they all. Book one Fierce Girls introduces the main characters - Gunnery Sergeant Molly Pickford, Lieutenant Commander Rick Cassidy, his daughter Ciara and other members of his family, and Captain Naomi MacCaffrey, a Canadian officer captured by extremists and rescued by Molly in the African jungles. They must find it in themselves to fight battles against other humans before the coming desperate struggle against an alien invasion of Earth’s first colony in space that will arise in the following books of the series. Those books will show these women and others take the lead in fighting for the life of the colony.

Doyle was back at Scotland Yard after taking maternity leave, and the powers-that-be had decided they’d ease her way by assigning her to assist DS Isabella Munoz, which was a fate only slightly worse than death. Annoying, it was, that she had to answer to Munoz; not to mention that Munoz wasn’t given many high-quality homicide assignments in the first place. As a case in point, the first assignment out of the box was a possible suicide at the housing projects, something that happened with such regularity that it was a wonder the responding officer had even thought it worthy of a detective’s notice....

"When you’re up in the mountains there’s always a chance that you’ll run into a pack of demon wolves with their armored hides and eight-inch long claws and teeth. The difference between that kind of wolf and my company commander is that I’m allowed to shoot the demon wolf.” (Lieutenant Daria Patel, platoon leader, 6th Indian detachment, Bravo Company, Colonial Rangers, New Hope Colony, Tau Ceti 4) Book two of Fierce Girls at War, Threat on the Horizon moves the story begun in Fierce Girls forward to 2126. In 2117 a Rift starship had discovered that humans have invaded a planet they consider theirs. The humans are judged extremely dangerous and must be eliminated. It will take a while for them to return to reclaim their property. LCDR Rick Cassidy and GSGT Molly Pickford have become very important to the New Hope Colony. By 2126 Major Gen. Robert Black is the senior officer at Ranger Command and is married to Kelly Cassidy. Kelly has trained Rick’s daughter, Ciara, and by age 12 she is an expert shot. When she turns 14, Ciara goes to the colony on the starship Asia. She makes friends among the crew and the Rangers competing against them in the ship’s VR trainer. Rick’s sisters are all going to the colony. LT Nicole O’Brien is a Colonial Ranger. Chloe O'Brien is also going, to run the family business at the colony. LT Bridget O’Brien is now in Colonial Security. Major Naomi MacCaffrey is sent to join the logistics team at the colony on the Amundsen. Three Rift transports with 30,000 Andoval mercenaries arrive at the colony. They plan to use the humans as food for their Andoval mercenaries. The Amundsen arrives in the system with 6,000 passengers and crew including 500 Rangers under Col. Colin Fox. Rick has a hot tub installed in his residence, a gift from a group of scientists he'd saved two years before. Girls from the new Hope Academy are selected for an internship tour of the Eastern settlements.

In the mountain valley, far from safety and with little hope of rescue, where the transport Cairo crashed after being damaged by fire from alien weapons, Commander Rick Cassidy has decided that the students from the New Hope Academy, some as young as 14, have to be treated as adults if they are to have a chance to survive to see their families again. These survivors are about to begin their training under the supervision of Gunnery Sergeant Molly Pickford and the handful of Ranger NCOs who survived the crash. They have all the gear, including the weapons and ammunition that were for the two Ranger companies that went ahead to New Cancun with Colonel Fox. Deadly predators inhabit the mountains where the Cairo crashed, and Cassidy and the other Rangers have to make sure there aren’t any of them living in their mountain valley before they can go outside the downed transport. Southport and New Cancun have fallen to the aliens, and their next target is the river settlement of New St. Louis, where the Rangers hope to delay the aliens long enough for the town to be evacuated. Short on weapons and ammunition, the "unauthorized" cache of ammunition and other Ranger gear that Cassidy and Pickford have been collecting may be critical in keeping the aliens at bay until help can arrive. But first, someone has to find out about it. The Rangers have to hold the aliens back until word gets to Earth, and that won’t be for several months, at best. Then, it would take months more for a relief force to get there. The starship Asia is inbound to the colony, and the ship's captain is concerned about the loss of communications with the colony. Rick Cassidy’s daughter Ciara is onboard and has been helping the Rangers onboard improve their scores practicing fighting demon wolves in the ship’s virtual reality trainer. She’s the ship’s record holder for top scores at both levels IV and V, the levels the Rangers, all professional soldiers, train at.

“It’s warming up and raining more than it was when we crashed here two weeks ago. The Commander’s worried about the valley flooding when the snow melts. I wouldn’t mind a day off from training though. My legs are sore, my back is aching and my shoulder is black and blue from all the target practice!” (Naomi Winston, age 17, fourth year student, New Hope Academy, New Hope Colony, Tau Ceti 4, UK) The summer will only last two months before the short fall season brings cold and snow and the danger of demon wolves descending into their valley. Commander Rick Cassidy worries about what the rain and snow melt will mean for the survivors of the downed transport Cairo who are trapped in a high mountain valley with little hope of rescue. For Gunnery Sergeant Molly Pickford and the other survivors of the Cairo, the warming early summer weather coincides with the end of the Pickford designed "hell-week" for the students and staff members, now called trainees, from the New Hope Academy. They can only hope that the aliens won’t come before they have trained the young survivors to fight and defend themselves. Major Naomi MacCaffrey and the other female officers living in Rick Cassidy’s old residence consider what the future might bring as the alien Rift and their Andoval mercenaries regroup after losing the battle for McKinley Pass. In the meantime the Rift Commanders plan for their attack on Winter Haven. For Rick Cassidy and Molly Pickford, the secret they have been keeping for over four years may be the key to providing the motivation and belief in them among the trainees and the Rangers NCOs training them that they really can do what the Commander and Gunnery Sergeant are convinced they can do. The crew of shuttle XL-17 and the squad of Brazilian Rangers with them have been lost at sea for two weeks with no sign of rescue coming. In New Hope Town scientists receive the alien bodies that Major Stairs sent back for examination.

This homicide case featured aristocrats as far as the eye could see, between the Russians and the Spaniards, and Acton, of course, who was supposedly investigating the others, but seemed a little too deferential for Doyle's taste. Why wasn't her husband moving in on the killer? And why did she have the sense that she was standing on the outside, peering into a world where there were no laws and no explanations - only birthrights, forged in ancient blood.
