Opening Shots, book three of Fierce Girls at War. The year is 2126. Unknown to the human colonists and the Colonial Rangers at the New Hope Colony on Tau Ceti 4 the alien Rift are finally ready to strike the first blow in their quest to remove the humans from the planet they'd claimed long ago but had never colonized or exploited themselves. Some of the senior Rangers however harbor some suspicions about the mysterious "fog" that has enshrouded a group of islands off the southeast coast of the Alpha continent for several months. Now the Rift are ready to strike. They had to wait until after winter before their waterborne invasion can begin. Reluctant to endanger their handful of orbit to ground airships they plan to attack the eastern settlements by sea. Commander Rick Cassidy and his deputy Gunnery Sergeant Molly Pickford have made themselves nearly indispensable to the colony since coming to the colony three years earlier after fleeing to the colony to escape the assassins sent to kill them. That threat has passed but going back to Earth won't be so easy. Rick's daughter 14-year-old Ciara is on her way to the colony aboard the starship Asia and his sisters Bridget and Nicole O'Brien, both now Colonial Rangers, are preparing to go there as well. The Regimental Commander General Jamison receives a report from the starship Asia message to informing him about the incident on Asia and learns that Rick Cassidy’s daughter was involved. A group of 50 female students and interns from the New Hope Academy prepare to leave on their internship tour of the colony’s eastern settlements with Veronika Tchachenko in charge of getting them where they need to go. First stop is New St Louis where they will put on concerts for the residents. Some of the girls visit with their parents who live in the various settlements. Cassidy and Pickford will have to travel with the Rangers’ equipment including their weapons and ammo on the transport Cairo.

When she turns 14, Ciara goes to the colony on the starship Asia. She makes friends among the crew and the Rangers competing against them in the ship’s VR trainer. Rick’s sisters are all going to the colony. LT Nicole O’Brien is a Colonial Ranger. Chloe O'Brien is also going, to run the family business at the colony. LT Bridget O’Brien is now in Colonial Security. Major Naomi MacCaffrey is sent to join the logistics team at the colony on the Amundsen. Three Rift transports with 30,000 Andoval mercenaries arrive at the colony. They plan to use the humans as food for their Andoval mercenaries. The Amundsen arrives in the system with 6,000 passengers and crew including 500 Rangers under Col. Colin Fox. Rick has a hot tub installed in his residence, a gift from a group of scientists he'd saved two years before. Girls from the new Hope Academy are selected for an internship tour of the Eastern settlements.

First Contact
Summary
The Rift have begun their invasion of the New Hope colony. They've shot down the 850-ft long transport Cairo which crashed in a mountain valley with CDR Rick Cassidy, GSGT Molly Pickford, and 50 female students from the New Hope Academy. The aliens have taken Southport and set their sights on their next target, New Cancun, as thousands of refugees pour into the western settlements. Back on Earth, Rick’s family gathers at the family home to celebrate Kelly’s commissioning as a major in Colonial Security and to discuss Stellar Enterprise’s plans for the New Hope colony. Chloe tells her that she wants to go on to the colony earlier than planned to help manage the family businesses there. She’ll be going on the Australia with her sister Nicole, whose Ranger detachment will be going to the colony. Rick’s daughter Ciara is already on her way on the Asia and his sister Bridget is also on her way to the colony on the Marco Polo. On the Rift flagship, General Osmu’a reviews the progress of his campaign to retake the planet and realizes that a warning message must have gone out before they had destroyed the humans' communications satellites. He had been counting on using the humans as a food source for his primitive and voracious Andoval mercenaries. While preparing for an alien attack on New Cancun, Colonel Fox sends a recon shuttle to Southport to see what has been going on there. The Colonial Rangers set up defenses at the bridges the aliens must cross to reach New Cancun, while the evacuation of the settlement’s 8,000 inhabitants begins. At the mountain valley crash site where the Cairo went down, Rick Cassidy and Molly Pickford begin to organize the survivors. Most of the crew and some of the academy staff members died in the crash. All of the female students and interns survived, but some are injured. Medical officer Major Maya Scott takes charge of the injured.

The first casualty lists come in. One of the missing is the father of one of the girls on Cairo. The Rift commander reviews the progress of his campaign to take back the planet with his senior officers and what they have learned from the battles. They have taken Southport, New Cancun, and are closing in on New St Louis. The Rift and their primitive but powerful mercenaries troops will move on the passage through the mountains east of Winter Haven, known as McKinley Pass, next. Major Claudia Stairs organizes the defense. On the inbound Asia, Rick Cassidy’s daughter Ciara is working with some of the female officers among the rangers onboard to improve their marksmanship in the virtual reality trainer where she now holds the highest scores on the ship. In North America, a malware attack starts playing havoc with the ship’s systems. Rick’s sisters Chloe and Nicole get ready for their departure for the colony on the Australia.

At Winter Haven Ranger, air and ground scouts are out searching for signs of the aliens heading north. The looming Battle of Winter Haven may be the end of the human presence on the eastern end of the Alpha continent. In the mountain valley where the transport Cairo crashed on day one of the invasion, Rick Cassidy and Molly Pickford step up the training of the girls and teachers from the New Hope Academy. Rick finds that some of the girls have skills he hadn’t expected that might contribute to their survival in the future. Others are selected for their leadership abilities to be squad leaders. The survivors of the recon shuttle shot down two days before the invasion began have made it to the New Cancun Ranger Base. When the recovery mission heads for Winter Haven, among the mission personnel are a group of civilian volunteers, including several parents of the missing girls who were on the Cairo with Commander Cassidy and Gunnery Sergeant Pickford when the transport was shot down. Rick Cassidy’s sister Lieutenant Bridget O’Brien and 2,000 other Rangers are on the colony transport ship Marco Polo headed for the New Hope Colony. Some of Bridget’s friends have been brought in on the secret of Rick and Molly’s true identities. The cargo supply ship Asia with Cassidy’s daughter Ciara onboard are getting closer to arrival at the colony. The Rift have located the mountain valley where the Cairo went down and plan to pay them a visit.

A Bad Day on the River

In the mountain valley, far from safety and with little hope of rescue, where the transport Cairo crashed after being damaged by fire from alien weapons, Commander Rick Cassidy has decided that the students from the New Hope Academy, some as young as 14, have to be treated as adults if they are to have a chance to survive to see their families again. These survivors are about to begin their training under the supervision of Gunnery Sergeant Molly Pickford and the handful of Ranger NCOs who survived the crash. They have all the gear, including the weapons and ammunition that were for the two Ranger companies that went ahead to New Cancun with Colonel Fox. Deadly predators inhabit the mountains where the Cairo crashed, and Cassidy and the other Rangers have to make sure there aren’t any of them living in their mountain valley before they can go outside the downed transport. Southport and New Cancun have fallen to the aliens, and their next target is the river settlement of New St. Louis, where the Rangers hope to delay the aliens long enough for the town to be evacuated. Short on weapons and ammunition, the "unauthorized" cache of ammunition and other Ranger gear that Cassidy and Pickford have been collecting may be critical in keeping the aliens at bay until help can arrive.
