The first and greatest "mad scientist" story, from the father of science fiction. Shipwreck survivor Edward Prendick is rescued and dropped off at a remote Pacific Island, where a disgraced British biologist has fled to continue his experimental work on human-animal hybrids. Prendick, at first terrified, later tries to subvert Moreau's domination of the "beast people" and plays a crucial part in the tragedy that unfolds. The Island of Doctor Moreau is part science-fiction and part horror. However, it is much more than that. The novel also raises questions about the ethical limits of scientific experiments, playing God, and the distinction between humans and animals. The Island of Dr Moreau has influenced many later stories and movies, mainly about mad scientists creating part-human, part-animal monsters. Now you can have this incomparable story read to you. This audio version is completely faithful to the H.G. Wells novel.PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be available in your Library section along with the audio.

This is a story so gripping and so authentic that its popularity has grown over generations. It is more popular now than it was when first written. It was 1898 when Wells crafted his seminal tale of grotesque tentacled Martians and their terrifying tripod fighting machines commencing their invasion of Earth from a landing site in a sandpit at Horsell Common, southwest of London. It is a suspenseful, entirely believable account of how one man and his family react and survive amidst the initial incredulity, and then the awakening terror, panic, and despair that overtakes millions of Londoners as the Martians slowly advance. The Hollywood blockbuster War of the Worlds, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise was based on this novel. However this audiobook is not associated with the movie. This audio version is completely faithful to the H.G. Wells novel.

The story of Alice in Wonderland began when the Reverend Charles Dodgson and his friend Robinson Duckworth rowed in a boat up the River Thames with the three Liddell sisters: Lorina (aged 13), Alice (aged 10), and Edith (aged 8). To while away the time during the eight-kilometer journey, Dodgson told the girls a story that, not so coincidentally, featured a bored little girl named Alice who goes looking for an adventure. The three girls loved it, and Alice Liddell asked Dodgson to write it down for her. He eventually did so and gave Alice the first manuscript of what he called Alice's Adventures Under Ground. Later, he printed a more elaborate copy by hand, illustrated it, and presented it to Alice as a Christmas present. On the advice of a friend, whose children had also loved the story, Dodgson expanded the manuscript and submitted it for publication, under the pseodonym "Lewis Carroll". The initial print run of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland sold out quickly. From the beginning, Alice was a publishing sensation, beloved by children and adults alike. The book has been translated into more than 50 languages and has never been out of print. There have also been many movie versions of the story. The most popular has been the Disney animated movie (1951), but there have also been several live-action films. The best known are the British version made in 1972 and the U.S. version made for TV in 1999. Now you can have this incomparable story read to you or your children. This audio version is a new recording, faithful to Lewis Carroll's book.

One of the best-loved children’s stories of all time, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz describes the adventures of young Dorothy, who is swept away from her Kansas farm in a cyclone, and lands in the strange country of Oz. This audiobook is ideal for young listeners (ages 5 to 12) to discover for themselves that a book can contain so much more adventure than a movie. Although the 1939 movie starring Judy Garland was immensely popular, it left out many parts of this story. While this four-hour audiobook edition is faithful to the original novel, it includes much more than just the spoken word. This premium audio edition will also kindle your child’s imagination with mysterious sounds such as winged monkeys hooting and flapping, animals growling, Munchkin bells, a flowing river, castle doors, Toto barking, chopping down trees, magic witches’ music, and even the clunky tinkling of a china cow! It's not just a narration - it also features in-character stereo conversations between brave and innocent young Dorothy, the lovable Scarecrow without a brain, the sad Tin Man without a heart, the blustery Lion without courage, and many, many others. Although this story is more than a hundred years old, its magic has not faded. The 21st century success of the Broadway musical Wicked (set in the land of Oz) has prompted two new movies for 2013, also based partly on Dorothy’s adventures in Oz. If you or child has seen, or you plan to see any of these Oz shows, then you should also find out how it all began. Set your child off on the original magical trip: this captivating audio journey, along the yellow brick road to see The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
