Summary

This is the incredible story of the world's greatest conqueror, a man who single handedly changed the course of history...and who was worshipped as a god. There have been many attempts in the 2,300 years since Alexander's death to tell the epic story of this enigmatic soldier. His deeds read like the stuff of legends. Of all the chroniclers of Alexander, and there have been many famous ones, including Plutarch and Ptolemy, none have given us a clearer and truer account than the one by Arrian. Writing 450 years after Alexander's death, Arrian had the advantage of hindsight and the unique ability to sift through important historical material which is now lost. He was able to judge the motives of many of the detractors of Alexander and to set the record straight in many instances. Alexander's aims have always been a topic of intense debate and this history will tell you what this brilliant tactician was trying to accomplish and why. From his first encounter with the Persians at the Battle of the Granicus to his last battle on the banks of the Indus River, thrill to the extraordinary exploits of Alexander the Great as he turns the ancient world upside down. After his passing, nothing would ever again be the same....

Summary

Arrian of Nicomedia (c. 86/89-c. after 146/160 AD), was a Greek historian, public servant, military commander, and philosopher of the Roman period. Although written more than 400 years after Alexander's death, Arrian's Campaigns of Alexander is the most reliable account of Alexander from antiquity. Arrian's personal experience as a commander gave him unique insights into the life of the world's greatest conqueror. He discusses Alexander's suppression of the Theban rebellion, his defeat of Persia, and his campaigns through Egypt, the Levant, and Mesopotamia. After 12 years of campaigning, Alexander the Great controlled an empire stretching from the Balkans and the Adriatic Sea in the west to modern-day Pakistan to the east. Arrian combines his personal experience of battle with material from Ptolemy’s memoirs and other ancient sources to present a singular portrait of Alexander.

Eumenides

Summary

The third and final play of the Oresteia by Aeschylus called Eumenides recounts the fate of Orestes after he had killed Clytemnestra to avenge the murder of his father, Agamemnon. He is relentlessly harassed by the Furies and pleads with the goddess Athena, who sets up a trial and casts the deciding vote to spare his life. This enrages the Furies, but Athena persuades them to pursue justice in a different way and changes their name to Eumenidis, the Kindly Ones.

The Campaigns of Alexander

Summary

The Campaigns of Alexander, also titled The Anabasis of Alexander, is a history of Alexander the Great of Macedon, focusing on his conquest of the Persian Empire. Composed by Arrian of Nicomedia in the second century AD, the work comprises seven books providing a broadly chronological account of the reign and campaigns of Alexander with a particular focus on military matters. Book One begins with Alexander's accession to the Macedonian throne in 336 BCE, and Book Seven recounts the events of Alexander's final year and his death. The title Anabasis and the work's style and structure reflect Arrian's emulation of the Greek historian Xenophon’s Anabasis, a 370 BCE work on the campaign of Cyrus the Younger.
