From the best-selling authors of The Leadership Challenge and over a dozen award-winning leadership books, James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner have written a new book that examines a fundamental question: How do people learn leadership? How do they learn to become leaders? Learning Leadership: The Five Fundamentals of Becoming an Exemplary Leader is a comprehensive guide to unleashing the inner-leader in us all and to building a solid foundation for a lifetime of leadership growth and mastery. The book offers a concrete framework to help individuals of all levels, functions, and backgrounds take charge of their own leadership development and become the best leaders they can be. Arguing that all individuals are born with the capacity to lead, Kouzes and Posner provide listeners with a practical series of actions and specific coaching tips for harnessing that capacity and creating a context in which they can excel. Supported by over 30 years of research, from over 70 countries, and with examples from real-world leaders, Learning Leadership is a clarion call to unleash the leadership potential that is already present in today's society. According to Kouzes and Posner, "Leadership makes a significant difference in levels of engagement and commitment and is perhaps the most important asset in every organization, yet recent research points to a shortage of leaders. It is a serious global concern. The world needs more exemplary leaders in order to promote high-performing workplaces and inspire feelings of greater self-worth and meaningfulness. The shortage, however, is not because of the lack of potential talent. The people are out there, the eagerness is out there, and the capability is out there. The shortage results from prevailing myths - myths about talent, strengths, position, self-reliance, and effort - that inhibit the vast majority of leaders from shining and organizations from realizing the full benefits of the talent they already have." Learning Leadership provides listeners with evidence-based strategies to ignite the habit of continuous improvement and the mindset of becoming the best leaders they can be. Emerging leaders, as well as leadership developers, internal and external coaches and trainers, and other human resource professionals will learn from first-hand stories and practical examples so that they can deeply understand and apply the fundamentals for becoming the best leaders they can be. Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, internationally recognized experts in the field of leadership and authors of the best-selling Leadership Challenge, explore the important notion of legacy and the critical questions any leader must ask him or herself in order to leave a lasting impact. In a series of 22 short essays, grouped into four parts (significance, relationships, aspirations, and courage), the authors explore the thorny and often ambiguous issues that today's leaders grapple with, including why: People don't commit to plans, they commit to causes; It's not the leader's vision, it's the sharedvision; There is no silver bullet; How leading changes who you are; and How the legacy you leave is the life you lead. In what is their most personal work to date, Kouzes and Posner zero in on the core challenges leaders face and offer up a thoughtful and reassuring perspective any leader, or aspiring leader, will learn from and enjoy. James M. Kouzes is chairman emeritus of the Tom Peters Company, a leadership development firm. A popular seminar and conference speaker, he has been cited by the The Wall Street Journal as one of the 12 most requested "non-university executive-education providers" to US companies.Barry Z. The authors of the classic best seller The Leadership Challenge bring their expertise to higher education, offering five practices that can make any college or university leader into an exemplary leader. Drawing on the same pioneering research that formed the foundation of their classic best seller The Leadership Challenge (over 2.7 million copies sold), James Kouzes and Barry Posner offer a set of leadership skills and practices that will make a significant difference in every area of higher education - faculty, administration, library services, career counseling, auxiliary services, campus safety, and more. It’s about the behaviors that leaders, regardless of their position, use to transform values into actions, visions into realities, obstacles into innovations, segments into solidarity, and risks into rewards. Kouzes and Posner tell the leadership story from the inside and move outward, describing it first as a personal journey and then as mobilizing others to want to do things they have never done before. The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership is the operating system for this adventure. Leadership in Higher Education explains the fundamental principles that support these practices and provides case examples of people in higher education who demonstrate each one. A core theme that weaves its way through all the chapters is that, whether it’s one to one or one to many, leadership is a relationship between those who aspire to lead and those who choose to follow. We need leaders who can unite us and ignite us. This book lights the way.

From the authors of The Leadership Challenge, Everyday People, Extraordinary Leadership is a TLC for individual contributors. Leadership is not about position, power, or place but about behavior. It's about what you do, not who you are. Ever since the first edition of The Leadership Challenge in 1987, Kouzes and Posner have said that "leadership is everyone's business". However, except for The Student Leadership Challenge, they have not (yet) written a book specifically for those who are not in formal leadership roles in organizations. Almost all examples in the six editions of TLC are people in managerial roles in the workplace. This book is for the audience the previous books do not reach: people who are not in formal leadership roles. There already exists a Leadership Is Everyone's Business (LIEB) workshop with materials offered through Workplace Learning Solutions, which this book will complement. Everyday People, Extraordinary Leadership draws from and builds upon material from existing works and is consistent with the TLC framework but adds all new stories related to this particular audience.
