Gitanjali

Summary

Gitanjali is a collection of poems by the poet, polymath, musician, and artist Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) who modernised Bengali literature and Indian art in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Tagore is sometimes referred to as "the Bard of Bengal". First published in 1912, the English Gitanjali or Song Offerings is a collection of Tagore's own English translations of his Bengali poems. It comprised translations of poems from the original Bengali Gitanjali, as well as poems drawn from his other books of poetry like Gitimalya, Naivedya, and Kheya and from his drama Achalayatan.   Many of the translations are indirect, altering, or omitting large parts of the poem or fusing two separate poems. In 1913, Tagore was the first non-European to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature, mainly for the English Gitanjali. The compound word "gitanjali" literally means "song offering" but the part meaning offering, "anjali" has a devotional undertone, so the title may also be rendered as "hymn offering".

The Hungry Stones

Summary

Beautifully told stories by the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Tagore, the poet, essayist, and composer, was friends with Albert Einstein. Written originally in Bengali and translated into English, this collection of short stories are delightful and moving. Tagore provides us with moral sentiments, but without being overly moralizing.

The Very Best of Rabindranath Tagore

Summary

Rabindranath Tagore was a Bengali poet, visual artist, playwright, novelist, and composer whose works renewed Bengali literature and music in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was Asia's first Nobel laureate when he won the 1913 Nobel Prize in Literature.  Three of his most prominent works are included here: Gitanjali is a cycle of 103 poems about the bliss of living and dying in wonder of the creation, while Stray Birds is a collection of some 300 poems. The poems are short but profound and the imagery lingers. The novel, The Home and the World is set on an estate in 1908; it’s a blend of love story and political intrigue against the background of the conflict in India.

The Home and the World

Summary

Audie-nominated narrator Deepti Gupta shares a classic love story set among the fires of India's struggle for independence. Bimala is torn between her commitment to her husband, Nikhil, who holds Western beliefs, and the radical Sandip, a leader of the Swadeshi movement under the British Raj. Bimala finds herself asking what freedom truly means for herself and for her country. Author, poet, and Nobel laureate Sir Rabindranath Tagore sets the story on a Bengali noble's estate in 1908. It is both a love story and a novel of political awakening. Bimala's attempts to resolve the irreconcilable - pressures of home and the world - reflect the conflict in India itself. The tragic outcome foreshadows the unrest that accompanied Partition in 1947.
